Forest Culture and Eucalyptus Trees (Classic Reprint) by Ellwood Cooper Pdf

Excerpt from Forest Culture and Eucalyptus Trees In presenting to the public a printed copy of my "Lecture on Forest Planting and Australian Gum-Trees," delivered before the Santa Barbara College Association, for the benefit of the library, it is necessary to preface the lecture by the statement that it appears in print in consequence of repeated demands for the publication from several localities in the southern part of California. Forest protection, the want of trees, in almost every part of the State, is manifest to all owners of land, who are eager to begin the planting; the only question being - What shall we plant? The rapidity of growth of the Blue Gum, and the facility with which it can be propagated, is a feature of great importance; but information is wanted. Much that has been written on the subject is mere speculative theories, often contradictory, and too uncertain to merit the confidence necessary to base such an important industry. This industry not only necessitates that the protection should be cheaply and quickly obtained, but that the tree should have a value for mechanical or other purposes. This value gives confidence to the planter, without which it can not be expected the work will go on. The inquiry comes, What is the value of the tree? On the Frontiers of Climate and Environmental Change by Ole Bruun,Thorkil Casse Pdf

This book is intended to fill a gap in climate-change literature by providing a comprehensive regional study and identifying the overall adaptation challenges in a real-life context. The way in which possible climate impacts interact with a range of other challenges in agriculture, forestry, disaster planning, health care, general economic development, and common livelihoods are presented, and it is argued that greater realism and broader vision are needed in order to address the climate challenge. For instance, unsuitable land- use changes in both coastal and highland regions may increase the vulnerability of rural people, many of whom are already living on the fringes. The author(s) also state(s) that, depending on context, it may be pertinent to address short-term and unsustainable resource use, irregularities in local land management, ineffective governance and social inequality, which are all likely to aggravate the impact of external climate and weather. Not least, it is imperative to integrate general environmental management with any climate-change adaptation effort.

Cultural and Spiritual Values of Biodiversity by United Nations Environment Programme Pdf

Weaving together philosophical, historical, legal, scientific and personal viewpoints, this book gives a rich sample of the vast web which makes up our cultural, spiritual and social diversity. The volume highlights the central importance of cultural and spiritual values in the appreciation and preservation of all life and argues that these values give us a true reflection of worth. It demonstrates how many cultures see Nature as an extension of society, and how sensitive stewardship is an integral part of existence. The book covers: language and how cognition and speech encode indigenous knowledge systems are critical for preservation of diversity; the complex issue of indigenous people and the problems of preserving their relationships both with and within their societies; voices of the world - expressions of concern and disquiet over the declining world diversity; holistic health practices where environment and diet are integrated into indigenous medical health systems; the importance of developing effective intellectual property rights and territorial and land rights to enhance and maintain local control. This book arose out of the Global Biodiversity Assessment (GBA), a massive review of current knowledge in the broad field of biological diversity, commissioned by United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP)
