Forged in the Fiery Furnace by Diana L. Hayes Pdf

African American spirituality was forged in the fiery furnace of slavery, segregation, and ongoing racial discrimination in both church and society. But African Americans are a people who are strengthened rather than weakened by their experience. This volume traces how African Americans have articulated their faith and love of God in language, song, and daily living. Beginning with its spiritual roots in Africa, Hayes shows how African American spirituality encompassed and incorporated the experience of slavery and the encounter with Christianity. Remarkably, African American slaves were able to find in the religion of their oppressors a message of hope, affirmation, and resistance. Through stories, song, distinctive forms of prayer, celebration, and prophetic witness, Hayes shows how the spirituality of African Americans has nurtured their survival as well as promoting action on behalf of the community and the greater society.

Revives My Soul Again by Lewis V. Baldwin,Victor Anderson Pdf

MLK and the Practice of Spirituality The scholarship on Martin Luther King Jr. is seriously lacking in terms of richly nuanced and revelatory treatments of his spirituality and spiritual life. This book addresses this neglect by focusing on King's life as a paradigm of a deep, vital, engaging, balanced, and contagious spirituality. It shows that the essence of the person King was lies in the quality of his own spiritual journey and how that translated into not only a personal devotional life of prayer, meditation, and fasting but also a public ministry that involved the uplift and empowerment of humanity. Much attention is devoted to King's spiritual leadership, to his sense of the civil rights movement as "a spiritual movement," and to his efforts to rescue humanity from what he termed a perpetual "death of the spirit." Readers encounter a figure who took seriously the personal, interpersonal, and sociopolitical aspects of the Christian faith, thereby figuring prominently in recasting the very definition of spirituality in his time. King's "holistic spirituality" is presented here with a clarity and power fresh for our own generation.

Better Than Right: by Elaine Eachus Pdf

‘’After a disquieting trip to Palestine in 2014, which was immediately followed by the Second Intifada in Israel, she was blown off her life’s course. In turmoil she read extensively looking for a refuge from the shock of her encounters. Rumi, Wendell Berry, Richard Rohr, Mary Oliver, Thomas Merton, the liberation theologians, and mystics lifted their lights for her. Better Than Right is one woman’s steps toward meaning. Definitely not a superhighway, her story is full of twists and turns, denoting her reflections and journey to make sense of life. She walks gingerly on a path that feels like a bewildered child caught in the crossfire of a bitter divorce. Her literary camera has both wide angle and close-up lenses to catch the sweeps and the detail of her journey on the third planet from the sun. Better Than Right invites you to see if her description resonates with your experience. Better still, does her light offer solace and hope for your next mile?

No Need for God by Peter William Clement Pdf

Because Catholic Theologians consciously fail to revise and rebuild the intellectual architecture of their faith -- and because they deliberately refuse to accommodate the discoveries of science over the 3000 years since their God was invented by a tribe of unenlightened shepherds and farmers, they are forced to maintain an inflexible policy of deliberate obscurantism. I use arguments from science (in layman's terms)- evolutionary biology, geology, archaeology, anthropology, particle physics, astronomy, and cosmology- to demonstrate the validity of this proposition. I have been a student (and victim) of Catholic Theology for more than 65 years. Over the last seven years (since my retirement) I have devoted nearly all of my time to learning and understanding the revelations of modem science - and to recognizing how incompatible they are with the infallible dogmas of the Pope and his minions. I have a Ph.D. in English, and I have completed 42 years of teaching on the college level. I am now Professor emeritus of English at Elms College in Chicopee, Massachusetts. My book is devoted to the questions which all peoples have tried to answer since the dawn of civilization: Where do we come from? Where are we going to? What are we here for? What the hell's it all about? The findings of modem neuroscience prove- with carloads of experimental and observational data -- that, without the material substrate of the brain, there can be no consciousness: that is, there can be no soul that survives the death of the body. The correlative point is that we now have empirical proof that God did not magically inject a supernatural soul into a single-celled zygote at the precise moment of its conception- because there is no such entity. Catholic Theologians cannot recognize the truth empirically demonstrated by modem neuroscience -- the fact that there is no such entity as a supernatural soul. Their only recourse is to maintain a policy of inflexible obscurantism - in plainer words, a ''theology of systematic prevarication.

Beyond Blood by J. Morgan Pdf

John Hunter and Tom Byner are two young men from the Saline District of the Cherokee Nation during the fateful period between the United States Civil War and Oklahoma statehood. Theirs is a land and a people caught between the courts of Hanging Judge Parker and local tribal authority. In a time and place where most still carried a gun, events were occurring almost daily that were to bring about change to their people. Intent on survival, nonetheless, the blood that flows in their veins propels them down a path where they find themselves struggling to maintain the convictions and beliefs that had been passed down to them since the Trail of Tears. It is their anonymity that provides the illusion of sanctuary, but even this is shattered with the arrival of Katie Dickinson, an attractive young girl caught up in the designs of those who see the opportunities to be had at the expense of the Cherokee people. It is through her friendship with Mary Baldridge that she connects with the young men and finds in these three friends her only hope for escape. But Katie's presence places the young men on a path that directly collides with the powers that be, unscrupulous powers that see the friends as impediments to plans for control and reward. As events unfold, each must search within themselves and come face-to-face with their own core beliefs and choose whether to strengthen or weaken in the face of adversity. They are aided by the oversight of their enemies that simply do not recognize the abilities of John Hunter. As they are forced to maneuver the changing world of their people, each step must be placed with care on a path where the gate is strait and the way increasingly narrow. 1

Political Assassinations and Attempts in US History by J. Michael Martinez Pdf

The long, dark history of political violence in the United States Violence has been employed to achieve political objectives throughout history. Taking the life of a perceived enemy is as old as mankind. Antiquity is filled with examples of political murders, such as when Julius Caesar was felled by assassins in 44 BCE. While assassinations and assassination attempts are not unique to the American way of life, denizens of other nations sometimes look upon the US as populated by reckless cowboys owing to a “Wild West” attitude about violence, especially episodes involving guns. In this book, J. Michael Martinez focuses on assassinations and attempts in the American republic. Nine American presidents—Andrew Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, James A. Garfield, William McKinley, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan—have been the targets of assassins. President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt was also a target shortly before he was sworn into office in 1933. Moreover, three presidential candidates—Theodore Roosevelt, Robert F. Kennedy, and George Wallace—were shot by assailants. In addition to presidents and candidates for the presidency, eight governors, seven U.S. senators, nine U.S. House members, eleven mayors, seventeen state legislators, and eleven judges have been victims of political violence. Not all political assassinations involve elected officials. Some of those targeted, such as Joseph Smith, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King Jr., were public figures who influenced political issues. But their cases are instructive because of their connection to, and influence on, the political process. No other nation with a population of over 50 million people has witnessed as many political assassinations or attempts. These violent episodes trigger a series of important questions. First, why has the United States—a country constructed on a bedrock of the rule of law and firmly committed to due process—been so susceptible to political violence? Martinez addresses these questions as he examines twenty-five instances of violence against elected officials and public figures in American history.
