Missing Soluch by Mahmoud Dowlatabadi Pdf

Perhaps the most important work in modern Iranian literature, this starkly beautiful novel examines the trials of an impoverished woman and her children living in a remote village in Iran, after the unexplained disappearance of her husband, Soluch. Lyrical yet unsparing, the novel examines her life as she contends with the political corruption, authoritarianism, and poverty of the village. It follows her vacillations between love for Soluch and anger at his absence, and her struggle to raise her children without their father. The novel critically evokes the unfulfilled aspirations of modern Iran, portraying a society caught between a past and a future that seem equally weighed down by injustice. This landmark novel -- the first ever written in the everyday language of the Iranian people -- revolutionized Persian literature in its beautiful and daring portrayal of the life of a marginal woman and her struggle to survive.

The Muslim Secular by Amar Sohal,Early-Career Research Fellow in Politics and International Studies Amar Sohal Pdf

Concerned with the fate of the minority in the age of the nation-state, Muslim political thought in modern South Asia has often been associated with religious nationalism and the creation of Pakistan. The Muslim Secular complicates that story by reconstructing the ideas of three prominent thinker-actors of the Indian freedom struggle: the Indian National Congress leader Abul Kalam Azad, the popular Kashmiri politician Sheikh Abdullah, and the nonviolent Pashtun activist Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Revising the common view that they were mere acolytes of their celebrated Hindu colleagues M.K. Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, this book argues that these three men collectively produced a distinct Muslim secularity from within the grander family of secular Indian nationalism; an intellectual tradition that has retained religion within the public space while nevertheless preventing it from defining either national membership or the state. At a time when many across the decolonising world believed that identity-based majorities and minorities were incompatible and had to be separated out into sovereign equals, Azad, Abdullah, and Ghaffar Khan thought differently about the problem of religious pluralism in a postcolonial democracy. The minority, they contended, could conceive of the majority not just as an antagonistic entity that is set against it, but to which it can belong and uniquely complete. Premising its claim to a single, united India upon the universalism of Islam, champions of the Muslim secular mobilised notions of federation and popular sovereignty to replace older monarchical and communitarian forms of power. But to finally jettison the demographic inequality between Hindus and Muslims, these thinkers redefined equality itself. Rejecting its liberal definition for being too abstract and thus prone to majoritarian assimilation, they replaced it with their own rendition of Indian parity to simultaneously evoke commonality and distinction between Hindu and Muslim peers. Azad, Abdullah, and Ghaffar Khan achieved this by deploying a range of concepts from profane inheritance and theological autonomy to linguistic diversity and ethical pledges. Retaining their Muslimness and Indian nationality in full, this crowning notion of equality-as-parity challenged both Gandhi and Nehru's abstractions and Mohammad Ali Jinnah's supposedly dangerous demand for Pakistan.

Tayos Gold by Stan Hall Pdf

In 1976, Scottish engineer Stan Hall organized a landmark expedition to the caves of the Tayos Indians in Ecuador, involving a dozen institutions, joint Special Forces and astronaut professor Neil Armstrong as Honorary President and participant. Hall was driven by curiosity about Erich von Däniken's report of a Metal Library allegedly found in the caves by investigator Juan Moricz in the mid-1960s (published in von Däniken's 1972 blockbuster Gold of the Gods). The story was considered unacceptable within an orthodox view of global history, especially in the absence of any ancient written script in South America. On this expedition, Hall began a personal odyssey into the heart of global enigmas: the origins of mankind, Atlantis, Ptolemy's lost city of Cattigara, and the sudden rise and fall of wonder civilizations... a journey that ended with his identification of Atlantis and Cattigara, and the entrance to the Metal Library along the Pastaza River in Ecuador. Chapters include: Juan Moricz-Magyar Extraordinary; Egyptian Tablets of the Mormons; Ecuador: Cradle of Civilization; The Triangle of the Shell, Tunnels Below the Andes; Discovery in the Caves; Neil Armstrong: Second Small Step; Into the Tayos Caves; Treasure of the Incas; Explorers Percy Fawcett and George M. Dyott; Valverde’s Treasure; Tayos Treasure: Analysis and Location; more.

New Brunswick Landing by Steven Cook Pdf

New Brunswick Landing is a collection of poetry spanning 30-years by Steven Cook. It is the story of an American life at the sparkling of the 21st Century. Born in New York City in 1962, Steven Robert Cook grew up in the woods and playgrounds of New Jersey. Here, a lifelong fascination with words was kindled and nurtured. In his mid-twenties, Cook began what would become a 25-year cross-country odyssey - working, traveling, performing on stages - all the while recording and documenting what he witnessed. From the coast of New Hampshire to the Rio Grande, from the Everglades to the California redwoods, these pages detail the life of friends and lovers, cities and towns, strangers and passers-by in the struggle and passions of night. Nearly 30 years ago, along New Brunswick Landing the journey began. Coming home is both celebration and a circle complete.
