"In 2008, the Christian Research Association was commissioned by the Principals' Association of Victorian Catholic Secondary Schools to explore how teachers in their schools understood spirituality and spiritual formation, how this related to the ethos of the schools, what they saw as contributing to or detracting from their spiritual development, and in what ways they felt the schools could better contribute to the teachers' spiritual formation. This information was not seen as prescriptive, but as providing a context in which principals could reflect on what they should be doing to enhance the spiritual formation of their staff. Individual interviews were held with sixty teachers in six schools. The schools were chosen to ensure a range of environments: rural and urban, high and low socio-economic. Each of the dioceses in Victoria was represented, and both diocesan schools and schools attached to religious congregations were included in the sample. In each school, a variety of staff were interviewed, males and females, younger and older, teachers involved in various subject areas, and teachers who were committed Catholics and those who were not.
