A Graeco-Roman Rhetorical Reading of the Farewell Discourse by John C. Stube Pdf

This title gives a thorough analysis of The Farewell Discourse (John 13-17), which is a unique and climactic portion of John's Gospel that serves as a hinge on which the entire Gospel narrative pivots from Jesus' public ministry to his Passion. Jesus is presented by the evangelist, with his words and actions, defining and modeling what his disciples are to be in their own soon-approaching ministry to the community of believers and to the world. He is shown giving persuasive words of comfort, encouragement, instruction, and motivation to his disciples as he prepares them to continue his mission after his departure.

The Linguistic Development of Goodbye. A Lexicalisation Process by John Kirsch Pdf

Seminar paper from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,7, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, language: English, abstract: There is no language on earth that did not undergo several major or minor changes in the course of time. The English language of course, is no exception and has changed both in grammatical and lexical fields. In modern days, it is taken for granted that people use certain words or phrases to end a conversation, which as a matter of fact, is not a new phenomenon to be observed. It would as much have been considered impolite back then as it is today, not to follow this path. One word that even young learners of English have integrated in their language use of today is the word goodbye. Even though many prefer to use the shortened form bye, the longer goodbye is still very common. But what many English speakers do not know is the fact that, in earlier times goodbye was associated with a religious blessing, which is a shortened form of a former farewell, called God be with you and was used in many texts in the time of the Early Modern English period.

Farewell Navigator by Leni Zumas Pdf

“A powerful, irresistible collection” of short stories about outsiders by the bestselling author of Red Clocks (Publishers Weekly). A teenage boy discovers his blind mother making a pass at his new best friend. A woman works in a factory by day and tends to a menagerie of sick animals by night. An aspiring witch is disillusioned by her spiritual shortcomings. A girl from a town so small it doesn’t exist on any map runs away with a rock band—all the while attempting to chart her way back home. The odds stacked against them, the lovingly rendered outsiders in these stories find connectedness and redemption in the unlikeliest of circumstances. Even the most surreal and ethereal moments take on a surprising familiarity, and the darkest experiences are imbued with unexpected hope. To become engrossed in Zumas’s world is a strange and beautiful delight. “Zumas gives socially awkward, mysteriously gifted and self-destructive outcasts spellbinding, unflinching voice in her debut collection. The heroes in this collection are trapped; some are resigned to years of caregiving, many are institutionalized and nearly all haunt the fringes of normalcy (or disregard the normal altogether).” —Publishers Weekly “Attention unrequited lovers, sisters of suicidal brothers, children of the legally blind: you are not alone. Leni Zumas understands your quiet agony.” —Miranda July, author of No One Belongs Here More Than You

Faust (Part 1&2) by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Pdf

This eBook edition of "Faust" has been formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. Faust is Goethe's magnum opus and considered by many to be one of the greatest works of German literature. The story takes place in multiple settings, the first of which is heaven. Mephistopheles makes a bet with God – he says that he can lure God's favorite human being – Faust, who is striving to learn everything that can be known, away from righteous pursuits. Faust makes an arrangement with the devil – the devil will do everything that Faust wants while he is here on Earth, and in exchange Faust will serve the devil in Hell. In Faust, Goethe focuses on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. In contrast to Faust Part One, in Part Two, the focus is no longer on the soul of Faust, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics, in addition to mystical and philosophical topics. The second part formed the principal occupation of Goethe's last years. This edition brings to you the complete Faust (Part One and Two) for your complete reading pleasure along with the lesser known Coleridge translation. This meticulously edited collection is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents: Faust - Faust (Part One) - Faust (Part Two) - Faustus (Translated by Samuel Taylor Coleridge) Criticisms: Life of Johann Wolfgang Goethe (James Sime) Goethe: The Writer (Ralph Waldo Emerson) Byron and Goethe (Giuseppe Mazzini) The Faust-Legend and Goethe's 'Faust' (H. B. Cotterill)

Adamtine by Hannah Berry Pdf

All people could do was speculate on the fate of those who vanished - strangers; seemingly random, unconnected: all plucked from their lives and never seen again. The notes found left behind, apparently describing some slender reason for their removal, were all that linked them. They were all delivered by one man. Rodney Moon had admitted seeing those who had been disappeared and to passing the notes, but denied any involvement beyond that. Who wrote the letters, then? Moon shrugged during the trial: 'It has no name,' he said. 'It's a bogeyman. A monster.' He was not mourned when the vengeful bereft finally found him. Some years later, four strangers; seemingly random, unconnected, all take the last train home. But something each of them has forgotten - or is trying to forget - is catching up with them; with a terrible, inexorable purpose. The devil is in the detail, as they say.

Gospel Interpretation and Christian Life by Francis J Moloney Pdf

The voice of Francis J Moloney, SDB, has been heard in New Testament studies for many decades. Internationally famous for his work on the Gospel of John, this volume gathers studies that demonstrate the breadth and richness of his interests, beyond that well-established enterprise. The first part of the boom is dedicated to Gospel studies, with the majority of essays focussing upon the Gospel of Mark. They reflect his long interest and his major commentary on that Gospel (2012). Studies on Matthew, Luke and John complete these reflections.

When in French by Lauren Collins Pdf

A language barrier is no match for love. Lauren Collins discovered this firsthand when, in her early thirties, she moved to London and fell for a Frenchman named Olivier—a surprising turn of events for someone who didn’t have a passport until she was in college. But what does it mean to love someone in a second language? Collins wonders, as her relationship with Olivier continues to grow entirely in English. Are there things she doesn’t understand about Olivier, having never spoken to him in his native tongue? Does “I love you” even mean the same thing as “je t’aime”? When the couple, newly married, relocates to Francophone Geneva, Collins—fearful of one day becoming "a Borat of a mother" who doesn’t understand her own kids—decides to answer her questions for herself by learning French. When in French is a laugh-out-loud funny and surprising memoir about the lengths we go to for love, as well as an exploration across culture and history into how we learn languages—and what they say about who we are. Collins grapples with the complexities of the French language, enduring excruciating role-playing games with her classmates at a Swiss language school and accidently telling her mother-in-law that she’s given birth to a coffee machine. In learning French, Collins must wrestle with the very nature of French identity and society—which, it turns out, is a far cry from life back home in North Carolina. Plumbing the mysterious depths of humanity’s many forms of language, Collins describes with great style and wicked humor the frustrations, embarrassments, surprises, and, finally, joys of learning—and living in—French.

Ten Poems to Say Goodbye by Roger Housden Pdf

In Ten Poems to Say Goodbye, the newest addition to the celebrated Ten Poems series, Roger Housden continues to highlight the magic of poetry, this time as it relates to personal loss. But while the selected poems in this volume may focus upon loss and grief, they also reflect solace, respite, and joy. A goodbye is an opportunity for kindness, for forgiveness, for intimacy, and ultimately for love and a deepening acceptance of life as it is rather than what it was. Goodbyes can be poignant, sorrowful, sometimes a relief, and—now and then—even an occasion for joy. They are always transitions that, when embraced, can be the door to a new life both for ourselves and for others. In this inspiring and consoling volume, Housden encourages readers to embrace poetry as a way of enabling us to better see and appreciate the beauty of the world around and within us.

She also edited and promoted the works of her husband, the Romantic poet and philosopher Percy Bysshe Shelley. Mary Shelley's works often argue that cooperation and sympathy, particularly as practiced by women in the family, were the ways to reform civil society. This view was a direct challenge to the individualistic Romantic ethos promoted by Percy Shelley and Enlightenment political theories.
