Forty Letters to a New Dad by Steven Molin Pdf

Becoming a new father can be an overwhelming experience. Suddenly, there is this new life looking to you for protection, provision, and guidance. It can be difficult to know where to begin. Often new fathers look to their own fathers or other elders for counsel and direction as they take on their new lifelong role. In Forty Letters to a New Dad, Steven Molin reflects in his letters on the wonder of fatherhood as he shares stories and insights from his own parental experience with his son who has recently become a father. As he explores the fathering experience in such letters as "Reflecting On A Miracle," "The Fear Of Parenting," and "Now You Know About Unconditional Love," there is the realization that, as Christians, we have a heavenly Father to which we can look for our example. God loves us more than any father could ever love his child, giving us a model for how fathers should love their own children. Forty Letters to a New Dad is a perfect gift for men taking their first steps on their journey of fatherhood, assuring them that they are not alone as God walks with them on this wonderfully petrifying and terrifyingly glorious experience of being a new dad. Steven Molin is the senior pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Stillwater, Minnesota. He has also served parishes in Oregon and South Dakota, and been an area director for the youth ministry organization Young Life. Molin is the author of Journey Of Stones (CSS) and A Faith For All Seasons (CSS). He is a graduate of Concordia University (St. Paul, Minnesota) and Luther Theological Seminary. He is the father of two children and a proud grandfather of Gordie Molin, born in 2005.

Forty Fathers by Tessa Lloyd Pdf

When Tessa Lloyd’s sons-in-law became fathers, she searched for resources that would help inspire them—especially parenting stories from other fathers. However, that book didn’t seem to exist. As a counsellor for children and families, Lloyd understood the ways a father-child relationship can have a lasting effect through the generations. Seeing a need, Lloyd decided to gather these stories herself. This resulting volume collects the stories and portraits of forty Canadian fathers who open up about both their own fathers and their deeply personal parenting experiences. This diverse group includes Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, writer Lawrence Hill, academic Niigaan Sinclair, athlete Trevor Linden, restaurateur Vikram Vij, anthropologist Wade Davis, musician Alan Doyle, artist Robert Bateman and philanthropist Rick Hansen. The contributors reflect on their varied parenting experiences and challenges, including parenting while incarcerated, parenting across cultural barriers, parenting through divorce, parenting while transgender, parenting as a celebrity and parenting with a disability. Many common themes emerge throughout the stories, including the process of overcoming cultural messages that encourage men to be strong, authoritarian and emotionally unavailable. The stories are extraordinarily candid and vulnerable, as the fathers describe their own failings, regrets and childhood traumas, as well as the humbling process of trying to do better. In one anecdote, Dr. Greg Wells describes the experience of meeting another father walking the empty streets at three a.m. with an infant, and how that moment of shared recognition gave him strength at a difficult time. The stories in this book offer a similar glimpse into the shared experiences and trials of fatherhood, but also offer fascinating reflections on the more universal experiences of finding one’s place within a family and striving to be a better person for the sake of others.

Dear Jay, Love Dad by Jay Wilkinson Pdf

College football fans need no introduction to Bud Wilkinson, but few of them know the great University of Oklahoma football coach as a devoted father. In Dear Jay, Love Bud, Jay Wilkinson, Bud’s younger son, shares forty-seven letters his father wrote to him while he was in college and graduate school. Spanning the early to mid-1960s, these letters reveal Bud’s deep love for his son, as well as the philosophy and values that led to his remarkable success in sports and in life. Beginning with the first letter Bud wrote when Jay left home, this collection shows a father guiding his son toward his own path while stressing the importance of service to others. The embodiment of the scholar-athlete, Bud mixes encouragement with intellectual discussions. When Jay reads American philosopher William James for a class at Duke University, his father, a serious student of literature, reads the book, too, and uses its insights to help Jay deal with the challenges of his freshman year. Bud writes about his own challenges, as well, including his debate over whether to accept the Kennedy administration’s invitation to head the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. Jay’s comments about each of these letters provide context and further insight. By the time Jay becomes a graduate student at the Episcopal Theological School, the correspondence turns toward religion and politics, as Bud reflects on the philosophical issues of the day and on his unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate in 1964. His belief that the greatest leaders are not always the most popular made him an unlikely politician even then, but a wonderful role model and interlocutor for his son. Bud’s thoughts on ethics in business and politics are as inspiring today as when he wrote them a half-century ago.

Letters From Iran by Arlene Elle Gray Pdf

Having a daughter serving in the Peace Corps, prompted me to publish, Letters from Iran, written forty years ago. The experiences of mine remain relevant today. The complex world with its problems is much like the situation forty years ago. These letters express the adjustment from being a strange foreigner, to becoming a beloved friend within the sphere of the friends, neighbors and acquaintances made while serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Babol, Iran from 1970-1972. I am now the age my parents were when these letters were written. I am facing retirement and aging and feel gratitude for the example my parents gave me of living vibrantly into old age. Both Mom and Dad lived into their nineties, proof that an active lifestyle maintains quality of life. Living for twenty five months in Iran changed my life, changed my attitudes about foreigners and deepened my philosophy that people are basically good. Learning the language, the customs, living among the people made this possible. I am deeply grateful to the friends mentioned in these letters. Contact with the Iranian families was lost within a year. Desire to return for a visit to Iran lingers in my heart. Christmas letters have kept me in touch with the Collins family. My sisters and I remain close. I married David Gray six weeks after returning to the States on furlough. We are blessed with four children; Mark Irving, Stephanie Ann, Brian Leroy and Timothy Alan. Our home is in Bismarck, North Dakota.

Dear Liam and Noah by Sean Martin Pdf

It has become common for people to look back and write letters to their younger selves based on their life experiences. Well, instead of writing a letter to his teenage self, this 55-year old dad, married at 42 and a first-time father at 50, created a book of letters to his four-year old twin boys describing his life experiences. My life has had a series of ups and downs, many of the downs self-inflicted but many of the ups resulting from learning and growing from my mistakes. Along the journey that featured loneliness and sadness for the majority of my first three decades of life, I met the person affectionately known as "Mama" when I was 40 just months after I decided to finally change my outlook on the world and change the behaviors the had held me back from fulfilling my potential both personally and professionally. Our journey to becoming parents took us down a whole new path, one of dealing with years of fertility issues and set the bar high on the topics of determination, perseverance, education and the importance of never, ever, giving up. I set out to create a project that taps into the most common aspects of life in our society and how my experiences related to everyday circumstances in hopes that if Liam and Noah are ever in a similar situation, they have either a good lesson to learn from their Daddy's successes or can gain knowledge from one of my failures.

A Letter to My Father by Isaac Mogilevsky Pdf

Many books have been written about the father-son relationship. Most of the readers are well-meaning fathers looking for helpful advice on how to build a relationship with their sons and impact them in a real, meaningful way from older wise men, who have done it. These “successful” fathers usually provide a step-by-step plan describing what they did to connect with their son. This book is different. This book is written from a son's perspective. At the beginning of each chapter, you’ll encounter a letter written from a son to his father asking important questions, expressing doubts, and sharing experiences during growing up from adolescence to becoming a young man. Young men have a lot of questions, questions about life, about love, about God, about finding meaning, about finding purpose, about pursuing a passion, about living courageously, that they rarely verbalize. Through the son’s perspective offered in this book, you’ll develop a meaningful understanding of the young man in your life. This book can be the turning point in your journey of connecting or reconnecting with your son. The impact of fathers on their sons cannot be overstated. It's time to get intentional about walking together, with fathers leading the charge! Father, this book will encourage you to stop being a bystander and will equip you with the tools and biblical principles to impact your son. Reading this book with your son will help you and your son grow together as it highlights both the successes and struggles that fathers and sons experience. This will not be a comfortable journey, but it is so worth it!
