Fostering Resilience Through Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises by Tulus T.H. Tambunan Pdf

"This a highly relevant and important book in today's business environment, given that it provides evidence on how MSMEs have been severely affected by the on-going Covid-19 crisis, the importance of financial technology, and export performance." -Fachru Nofrian, Department of Economics, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional Veteran Jakarta, Indonesia This book focuses on the development of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia based on various primary and secondary field surveys. In doing so, the book provides a regional comparison of countries in Asia- Pacific, covering issues such as employment generation, formation of gross domestic product (GDP), export development, development constraints, productivity, and investment. To achieve this, the book analyzes the role of partnerships between MSMEs such as large companies, banks and government institutions, and the role of cooperatives. It also includes studies on women's entrepreneurship in Indonesia, and also explores the crisis mitigating measures (CMMs) widely adopted by MSMEs affected by financial crises in the past. Finally, the book also examines the development of financial technology (FinTech), and in particular peer-to-peer (P2P) lending and how this can serve as an alternative source of funding for MSMEs in Indonesia. Aspects of this book would be useful to students, researchers, practitioners, and also those interested in economic-related sustainable development goals (SDGs), given the importance the United Nations (UN) has assigned to MSMEs for taking a lead in employment creation, and poverty eradication. Professor, Tulus T.H. Tambunan is part of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), at University of Trisakti, Jakarta. He is also the Head of the Center for Industry, SME & Business Competition Studies at the same University, and the initiator and chief editor of the International Journal of Small and Medium Enterprises and Business Sustainability.

How Small-to-Medium Enterprises Thrive and Survive in Turbulent Times by Yiu Ha Carmen Chu,Kosmas Smyrnios Pdf

Political and financial upheaval is not a new phenomenon – from the tulip bulb bubble in the Netherlands in the seventeenth century to Black Monday in 1987, businesses throughout history have worked to adapt and cope. However, today’s climate is even more fraught with crises, raising the levels of concern for business, society, and governments. It especially poses a challenge for small businesses, who have to learn to cope with this increasingly turbulent environment, dealing with the difficulties and taking advantage of the new opportunities that turbulence can provide. Understanding how resilience capabilities can be developed to promote sustainable business is imperative. This book provides a new paradigm for conceptualizing resilience capabilities and advances current understanding both theoretically and practically in real-world business settings. Examining the processes of resilience during different phases of crisis reveals why businesses either fail, or outperform their counterparts during times of turbulence. Based on in-depth empirical research, researchers and advanced students in small business, strategic management and risk management will find this an invaluable guide to organizational resilience.

Forest and farm producer organizations building resilience by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

Forest and farm producers’ livelihoods are threatened by a complex risk context, where environmental change is accelerating (climate change, degradation of natural resources) and chronic and episodic stressors and disturbances (poverty, pests, economic shocks) are occurring outside of the range of past experience. Forest and farm producers’ livelihood systems are characterized by small-scale farms and woodlots, direct dependence on natural resources, and smallholder value chains extending over larger landscapes. Building the resilience of these systems and their functions requires i) improving the short- and long-term viability of livelihoods through sustainability, efficiency, and profitability in production and along the value chain; ii) increasing preparedness and the capacity to act in the face of climate change and other stressors and shocks; and iii) stewarding farm ecosystems and aiming for ecological co-benefits in all actions. In addition, participatory and inclusive service landscapes and management processes are considered preconditions for all the above-mentioned domains of resilience, largely defining the long-term impact and overall success of resilience actions.

Strategies for Building Resilience against Climate and Ecosystem Changes in Sub-Saharan Africa by Osamu Saito,Gordana Kranjac-Berisavljevic,Kazuhiko Takeuchi,Edwin A. Gyasi Pdf

This book summarizes studies on climate and ecosystem change adaptation and resilience in Africa (CECAR-Africa), a collaboration with the goal of creating an integrated resilience enhancement strategy as a potential model for semi-arid regions across Sub-Saharan Africa by combining climate change and ecosystem change research. The case studies were conducted at multiple scales – local, national, and regional – and incorporate the natural sciences, social sciences and engineering in a transdisciplinary manner while also integrating the needs of local communities. The book chiefly addresses three thematic areas, namely: Forecast and assessment of climate change impacts on agro-ecosystems; Risk assessment of extreme weather hazards and development of adaptive resource management methods; and Implementing capacity development programs for local leaders and practitioners. The collaborative nature of the project and the use of various quantitative and qualitative research technique s and methods – such as field surveys, questionnaires, focus group discussions, land use and cover change analysis, and climate downscaled modeling – make the book truly unique. Especially at a time when both long-term climate change and short-term extreme weather events such as droughts and floods are worsening, this book offers potential approaches to developing an integrated framework for assessing the local ability to cope with floods and droughts, and for enhancing the resilience of farming communities in developing countries, which are the most vulnerable to these changes and extreme weather events. As such, it will be of interest to a wider audience, including academics, professionals, and government officials alike.

Changing Law and Contractual Relations under COVID-19 by Yuka Kaneko Pdf

COVID-19 has changed not only human lives since the beginning of the year 2020, but systems of human society as well. Legal measures have been employed in every country to mandate the state’s control of human behavior in order to stop the pandemic. But the mode of legal control has differed by country, showing different results in terms of constraining the spread of infection. While the behavioral restrictions continue, the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic have been causing another catastrophe, particularly in the most vulnerable sectors of each society. Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are typical representatives of such vulnerable groups, compelled to assume the economic burdens of the pandemic that have been shifted from the larger economic actors that hold the advantage in contractual negotiations. Statistical data on infection status have revealed a great gap between countries, such as European nations reaching the level of several thousand deaths per one hundred thousand population, while most Asian countries have maintained a level of one or two digits. Even though COVID-19 affects the whole world, the redistribution of risks in the pandemic is a goal to be pursued in the socio-cultural context of each society. This book explores the law and social changes in Asian countries under the impact of COVID-19, with a particular focus on the social relations surrounding the SMEs. These form the center of contractual relations between various socio-economic actors and at the same time, are a direct counterpart of the governmental SME policies, peculiar to Asian interventionist governments. A comparative approach is taken, using the results of interview surveys based on structured questions conducted via research collaboration between the contributors from Japan as well as other Asian countries. A comparative analysis of the risk redistribution in the pandemic between countries that share similar preconditions is still possible and meaningful. The authors of this book hold the view that Asian countries have sufficient bases for international comparison, particularly on the risk reallocation in the SME sector, given the relatively well-controlled level of infection, presumably due to the similarity of cooperative social culture. Another basis for comparison is the similarity of the laws surrounding the business operation of SMEs since normal times, which makes it feasible to compare the difference in the pandemic. What risks should be reallocated between whom, and how?
