Four Classics on the Theory of Double-Entry Bookkeeping (RLE Accounting) by Richard P. Brief Pdf

Although each of the pieces included in this collection has been cited as an outstanding contribution to the literature on the subject, they are not available in most libraries. Each of them is a classic on the theory of double-entry bookkeeping. Of the nine articles reprinted in this volume originally published in 1984, those by Ladelle, Hotelling and Anton are recognized as being the classic articles on the depreciation of a single ‘machine’. Each of these articles was published in a journal that is often not accessible and reprinted here has brought them together in one place. For many years accountants have dealt with depreciation and capital maintenance as a static problem. This volume recognizes its dynamic aspects.

Principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping (Classic Reprint) by Charles M. van Cleve Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping What I claim for the book is that it solves the problem of placing double-entry bookkeeping upon a rational basis; and to the best of my knowledge and belief it presents the first and only solution of that problem. It is one of the strangest things in the history of the arts and sciences that this great system of accounting, which, by reason of its compactness and convenience, has come into almost universal use, should have attained so high a degree of development on the practical side, while on the theoretical side it is and always has been in a state of utter confusion. As a rule, the study of a useful art has a certain value as mental discipline; the art of accounting is the one exception to the rule. Aside from the so-called occult sciences, there is nothing which so tends to bewilder the mind and to dull the faculty of reason as the study of double-entry bookkeeping in the form in which it is customary to present it. Twentieth Century Accounting Thinkers (RLE Accounting) by J. R. Edwards Pdf

When originally published in 1994 this volume was the first international review of accounting theory to focus on the contributions of its leading thinkers. Very few attempts had been made, in the accounting literature, to assess the contribution of the theorists who have had such an important influence on the direction of research and practice. Written by experts the studies in this volume provide a unique guide to the development of accounting theory and practice in regions as diverse as the USA, Japan and Europe.

The Development of Double Entry (RLE Accounting) by Chris W. Nobes Pdf

This compilation concerns account books, not books on accounting. Most of the essays analyse the account book(s) of a single person or business. In each case the account book(s) demonstrate the presence of, at least, elements of double entry. The essays come in pairs, beginning with Geoffrey Lee's paper on Florentine bank ledger fragments of 1211, some of the earliest relics of Italian bookkeeping. Subsequent papers trace the development of double entry over the centuries until 1786 when full double entry was achieved. There are papers from the UK and USA which illustrate the use of balance sheets, valuation techniques and the accruals convention as well as papers which analyse the causes of the development of double entry, using the evidence of others.

British Cost Accounting 1887-1952 (RLE Accounting) by Trevor Boyns,Malcolm Anderson,J. Edwards Pdf

This anthology provides readers with a flavour of the development of cost accounting and emerging management accounting literature from ‘The Costing Renaissance’ to 1952. Many of the issues which were prominent in the middle of the twentieth century are still pressing issues today and received important early treatments. However, a more balanced longitudinal coverage of the relevant material enables readers to trace the development of new attitudes to problems which had been recognized early on and to become aware of the fact that different issues tended to dominate the literature as time went by. The selection bias has favoured material which was covered for the first time or in a new way.

Principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping by Charles M. Van Cleve Pdf

Excerpt from Principles of Double-Entry Bookkeeping The purpose of this treatise, as its title implies, is to explain the principles which underlie the art of accounting by the double-entry method. It deals with the interpretation rather than the routine of bookkeeping, and limits the discussion to the three essential forms - the journal entry, the ledger account and the balance sheet. It does not propose any change in the routine, but it does propose a decided change in the interpretation of accounts and in the method of reporting results. What I claim for the book is that it solves the problem of placing double-entry bookkeeping upon a rational basis; and to the best of my knowledge and belief it presents the first and only solution of that problem. It is one of the strangest things in the history of the arts and sciences that this great system of accounting, which, by reason of its compactness and convenience, has come into almost universal use, should have attained so high a degree of development on the practical side, while on the theoretical side it is and always has been in a state of utter confusion. Contributions of Four Accounting Pioneers by James Don Edwards,Roland F. Salmonson Pdf

This book, first published in 1988, is a valuable digest of the contributions to periodical literature in accountancy by four major contributors of the twentieth century. The four authors represent a total of over two hundred years of experience and leadership in the accounting profession. In many respects this book can be described as a history of accounting thought since 1900, and the particular manner in which each author has contributed to the development of the profession is detailed in the biography preceding each section.

Theory of Bookkeeping (Classic Reprint) by O. M. Powers Pdf

Excerpt from Theory of Bookkeeping Bookkeeping is the science of accounts and the systematic method of keeping business records. The system of bookkeeping now in use throughout the Western world originated with the Venetians about the close of the fifteenth century, and was an outgrowth of the extensive commerce carried on by Venice, Florence, and other Italian cities at that time. Single Entry is a method of bookkeeping in which a record is kept of accounts with persons only. The customers are charged with purchases or credited with payments, but no record is kept of the merchandise or other properly which enters into the transaction. This method is open to the objection that the record is incomplete. Single entry is little used except in very small concerns. Double Entry, as its name implies, is a method of keeping accounts in which every debit has a corresponding credit. Under this method the commodities or things which enter into the business are debited and credited the same as persons, thus furnishing a record of the cash, goods or other property belonging to the business. Since every debit must have a credit of equal amount, the books should always be in balance, and this equilibrium of debit and credit is a test of their correctness. Debtor and Creditor. A debtor is one who owes a debt. A creditor is one to whom a debt is owing. These two classes of persons embrace all with whom any house sustains business relations. They are diametrically opposite in character. The one has cost the business something and the other has produced or furnished the business something. One of these classes we will charge; the other we will credit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
