Elementary Introduction to Spatial and Temporal Fractals by L.T. Fan,D. Neogi,M. Yashima Pdf

Fractals play an important role in modeling natural phenomena and engineering processes. And fractals have a close connection to the concepts of chaotic dynamics. This monograph presents definitions, concepts, notions and methodologies of both spatial and temporal fractals. It addresses students and researchers in chemistry and in chemical engineering. The authors present the concepts and methodologies in sufficient detail for uninitiated readers. They include many simple examples and graphical illustrations. They outline some examples in more detail: Perimeter fractal dimension of char particles, surface fractal dimension of charcoal; fractal analysis of pressure fluctuation in multiphase flow systems. Readers who master the concepts in this book, can confidently apply them to their fields of interest.

IUTAM Symposium on Chaotic Dynamics and Control of Systems and Processes in Mechanics by Giuseppe Rega,F. Vestroni Pdf

The interest of the applied mechanics community in chaotic dynamics of engineering systems has exploded in the last fifteen years, although research activity on nonlinear dynamical problems in mechanics started well before the end of the Eighties. It developed first within the general context of the classical theory of nonlinear oscillations, or nonlinear vibrations, and of the relevant engineering applications. This was an extremely fertile field in terms of formulation of mechanical and mathematical models, of development of powerful analytical techniques, and of understanding of a number of basic nonlinear phenomena. At about the same time, meaningful theoretical results highlighting new solution methods and new or complex phenomena in the dynamics of deterministic systems were obtained within dynamical systems theory by means of sophisticated geometrical and computational techniques. In recent years, careful experimental studies have been made to establish the actual occurrence and observability of the predicted dynamic phenomena, as it is vitally needed in all engineering fields. Complex dynamics have been shown to characterize the behaviour of a great number of nonlinear mechanical systems, ranging from aerospace engineering applications to naval applications, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, robotics and biomechanics, and other areas. The International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics grasped the importance of such complex phenomena in the Eighties, when the first IUTAM Symposium devoted to the general topic of nonlinear and chaotic dynamics in applied mechanics and engineering was held in Stuttgart (1989).

Mortal City by Peter Lang Pdf

A heightened perception of urban violence increasingly dominates public discourse, but, as current events seem to demonstrate, these crises continue without immanent resolution. The very definitions of the city and of violence are constantly being reevaluated: the site of the city is shifting across real and imagined space; violence has been exposed outside the traditional areas of social conflict. Mortal City, published With StoreFront for Art and Architecture, is comprised of a series of essays investigating direct and indirect forms of violence and the city. Mortal City presents several different approaches to the subject. Articles by Donald Albrecht, Diane Ghirardo, Herbert Muschamp, Richard Plunz, and Lebbeus Woods, among others, are accompanied by photo essays by Warchitecture and Camilo Vergara and an interview with Mark Wigley. "We have gone from fearing the death of the city to fearing the city of death, and this traumatic change is reflected passionately in this book". -- A.D.
