Free Within Ourselves by Jewell Parker Rhodes Pdf

A Bird by Bird for the African-American market--A top-notch writer's guide filled with practical guidance, essays, and journal exercises for the African-American writer including advice from E.Lynn Harris, Charles Johnson, and Yolanda Joe. In her introduction, Jewell Parker Rhodes writes: "Never (in four years of college or five years of graduate school) was I assigned an exercise or given a story example that included a person of color...While the educational system and the publishing world have become progressively more welcoming of African-American authors, there is still little attention to educating, supporting, and sustaining the writing process of African-American authors. Free Within Ourselves is a solid first step--it is the book I wished I had when I started out as a writer. It is meant to be a song of encouragement for African-American artisits and visionaries. Free Within Ourselves is a step-by-step introduction to fictional technique, exploring story ideas, and charting one's progress, as well as a resource guide for publishing fiction." For the legions of people who have a novel stuck in their word processors, help is finally on the way! Free Within Ourselves is an excellent guide to all the elements necessary to crafting fiction: character development, point of view, plot, atmosphere, dialogue, diction, sentence variety, and revision. Writing techniques are taught using exercises, journaling, story examples, and analyses of famous writing fragments, as well as several complete stories (including those of James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, and Edwidge Dandicat, among others). The book is further enhanced by inspirational advice from successful contemporary black writers (such as Bebe Moore Campbell, Rita Dove, Henry Louis Gates, John Edgar Wideman, and others), a bibliography, and a guide to workshops, journals, magazines, contests, and fellowships supportive of black arts.

Drop the Drama! by Guerin Moorman Pdf

We all experience drama in one form or another. Whether its relational conflicts, financial stress, addiction, anger, overeating, or any number of problems; drama is not something that happens to us, but something that happens within us. In whatever form we experience it, drama is ultimately the internal dialogue of wrestling against what is. Drop the Drama! From Drama Addiction to Simply Inspired Living asserts that we become drama addicts, emotionally reacting to life, recreating life stories based on a limited understanding of who we really are. In an approach that transcends all spiritual paths, Drop the Drama! takes an alternative view of the ancient story of Adam and Eve challenging our traditional ways of viewing God, self, the nature of reality, and ultimately revealing a new way of Simply Inspired Living for all humanity. Explore the root cause of suffering; The Drama Mind. Expose the symptoms of the Drama Mind and how it cloaks itself from our awareness. Drop the cycles of Shame, Blame, and The Drama Game. Discover The Quest, questions found in the story of Adam and Eve leading us out of drama and back to Simply Inspired Living. Drop the Drama! is not about providing more factual knowledge for the mind, or getting motivated to achieve certain results in life. It is about uncovering the stories we create, the discovery of who we really are, and unleashing a life that is simply inspiring. Are you ready to Drop the Drama?

Children's Biographies of African American Women by Sara C. VanderHaagen Pdf

A study of how rhetoric has shaped the life stories of African American role models in children's literature In Children's Biographies of African American Women: Rhetoric, Public Memory, and Agency Sara C. VanderHaagen examines how these biographies encourage young readers to think about themselves as agents in a public world. Specifically VanderHaagen illustrates how these works use traditional means to serve progressive ends and thereby examines the rhetorical power of biography in shaping identity and promoting public action. Drawing on scholarship in rhetoric, memory studies, and children's literature, VanderHaagen presents rhetorical analyses of biographies of three African American women—poet Phillis Wheatley, activist Sojourner Truth, and educator-turned-politician Shirley Chisholm—published in the United States during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. VanderHaagen begins by analyzing how biographical sketches in books for black children published during the 1920s represent Wheatley and Truth. The study then shifts to books published between 1949 and 2015. VanderHaagen uses a concept adapted from philosopher Paul Ricoeur—the idea of the "agential spiral"—to chart the ways that biographies have used rhetoric to shape the life stories of Wheatley, Truth, and Chisholm. By bringing a critical, rhetorical perspective to the study of biographies for children, this book advances the understanding of how lives of the past are used persuasively to shape identity and encourage action in the contemporary public world. VanderHaagen contributes to the study of rhetoric and African American children's literature and refocuses the field of memory studies on children's biographies, a significant but often-overlooked genre through which public memories first take shape.

The Renewal of Ourselves and Our World by Samuel Widmer Nicolet Pdf

Twenty letters, thirteen of which appeared during Samuel Widmer's lifetime and eleven after his death, were published with a foreword, summarising the basic work of self-knowledge. They also summarise Samuel's literary activities of the past years on the subject of self-knowledge in a concise work. Samuel wrote: Should not the most important and fundamental concerns of such a movement be addressed in a collection of such letters over time? Shouldn't its goals and its tools for achieving these goals be outlined in more detail and anew? And do these goals not simply consist in the renewal of ourselves and our world, which we hope to achieve with the tool of self-knowledge? Have we not come to make the earth a paradise? Is this not our real goal? Are we not part of the movement that intends such a thing, dreams such a thing? We are not really forming a movement. That would be something organised, something created and produced by thoughts, by the ego. We are part of the movement that is led by love. We have awakened to this fundamental movement in the universe. The goal of this force, if it can be described as a goal at all, is renewal. The renewal of us humans and thus of our world. It is love that makes everything new again and again.

Waking to Truth by John Nolan Pdf

Waking To Truth describes why there are so many problems and personal unhappiness in the world today. The core problem stems from the fact that people are not properly using the power of their minds, which is the greatest resource, we possess. When we do not use our mind properly then we think and act based on distortions, partial truths and at times, illusions. This is the prime cause of the turmoil effecting the society as well as our personal lives. Waking To Truth explains that by learning to see truth in all we experience we will be properly using the power of our minds. At the same time learning the truth will lead us to a higher level of consciousness, which will free us from the burdens, and limitations that have restricted our true freedom. It will be seen that Truth is our highest state of mind.

The Majestic Columbia River Gorge by S. W. Wahclellaspirit Pdf

His interests include the Native American history of the Northwest. This, the second manuscript of the series of three, pertains to the lives of those who walked the lands and worshipped everything they were offered from the Great Spirit above. Though the natives believed in spirituality, their beliefs were not far from understanding there is a God that offered mankind everything they would need to survive on a day-to-day basis. It is in that testament of their survival and toward their beliefs that these stories may bring one to hear the call of the coyote and the warning of the crow as they look down upon you and lead you safely across the many trails you may follow in your life. Steve now lives in the Portland, Oregon, area with his beloved wife, Joan.

Journey Toward Self-Realization by Kenneth C. Brown Pdf

This Book Is about a deep and superficial exploration of the contents of consciousness individual and collectively, "Together we will discover the many impacts that mental and social accumulations have upon the human mind, we will explore the differences in memorization and intelligence; pleasure and happiness, duality," "Together we will explore the possibility of freeing ourselves from our mental accumulations, freeing ourselves from all psychological authority. I'm not talking about the laws of the land. Freedom without intelligence is a lunatic looking for a place to happen. " "Together we will explore what is intrinsic to the mind and what is artificial." "Together we will explore reality which is equally true to us all. When we live from beliefs we distort reality, that reality that's equally true to us all."

Representing Children in Chinese and U.S. Children's Literature by Claudia Nelson,Rebecca Morris Pdf

Bringing together children’s literature scholars from China and the United States, this collection provides an introduction to the scope and goals of a field characterized by active but also distinctive scholarship in two countries with very different rhetorical traditions. The volume’s five sections highlight the differences between and overlapping concerns of Chinese and American scholars, as they examine children’s literature with respect to cultural metaphors and motifs, historical movements, authorship, didacticism, important themes, and the current status of and future directions for literature and criticism. Wide-ranging and admirably ambitious in its encouragement of communication between scholars from two major nations, Representing Children in Chinese and U.S. Children’s Literature serves as a model for examining how and why children’s literature, more than many literary forms, circulates internationally.
