The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism by Jessica Blanche Peixotto Pdf

Excerpt from The French Revolution and Modern French Socialism: A Comparative Study of the Principles of the French Revolution and the Doctrines of Modern French Socialism On the other hand, there is a real and interesting separation in the social philosophy of the two doctrines. The later theory asks that an additional right be as sured to the individual, and therefore that government assume one new function, and it bases its claim for these changes on an idea of social progress different from that of the Revolutionists. The following pages aim to demonstrate these like nesses and differences. If the matter they present ap pears insufficient or the result of immature judgment, it is hoped it will, in any event, be an inspiration for some stronger work along lines which, it seems to the writer, cannot but be helpful in adding to a better understanding of latter-day problems. A History of Socialism (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Kirkup Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Socialism For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working - classes, of women, and of the down - trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. The Reconstruction of American Liberalism, 1865-1914 by Nancy Cohen Pdf

Tracing the transformation of liberal political ideology from the end of the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Nancy Cohen offers a new interpretation of the origins and character of modern liberalism. She argues that the values and programs associated with modern liberalism were formulated not during the Progressive Era, as most accounts maintain, but earlier, in the very different social context of the Gilded Age. Integrating intellectual, social, cultural, and economic history, Cohen argues that the reconstruction of liberalism hinged on the reaction of postbellum liberals to social and labor unrest. As new social movements of workers and farmers arose and phrased their protests in the rhetoric of democratic producerism, liberals retreated from earlier commitments to an expansive vision of democracy. Redefining liberal ideas about citizenship and the state, says Cohen, they played a critical role in legitimating emergent corporate capitalism and politically insulating it from democratic challenge. As the social cost of economic globalization comes under international critical scrutiny, this book revisits the bitter struggles over the relationship between capitalism and democracy in post-Civil War America. The resolution of this problem offered by the new liberalism deeply influenced the progressives and has left an enduring legacy for twentieth-century American politics, Cohen argues.

Socialism, Utopian and Scientific (Classic Reprint) by Frederick Engels Pdf

Excerpt from Socialism, Utopian and Scientific The present little. Book is, originally, a part of a larger whole.'about 1875, Dr. E. Diihring, privat docent at Berlin University, suddenly and rather clamorously announced his conversion to Socialism, and presented the German public not only with an elaborate Socialist theory, but also with a complete practical plan for the reorganization of society. As a matter of course, he fell foul of his predecessors; above all, he honored Marx by pouring out upon him the full vials of his wrath. This took place about the time when the two sec tions of the Socialist party in Germany - Eisenach ers and Lassallians - had just efi'ected their fusion, and thus obtained not only an immense increase of strength, but, what was more, the faculty of em ploying the whole of this strength against the com mon enemy. The Socialist party in Germany was fast becoming a power. But to make it a power, the first condition was that the newly-conquered unity 'should not be imperiled. And Dr. Diihring openly proceeded to form around himself a sect, the nucleus of a future separate party. It thus became necessary to take up the gauntlet thrown down to us, and to fight out the struggle whether we liked it or not.
