Friction at the Atomic Level by Motohisa Hirano Pdf

Written by one of the most distinguished scientists and a pioneer in this field, this monograph represents a stand-alone, concise guide to friction at the atomic level. It brings together hitherto widely-scattered information in one single source, and is the first to explain the nature of friction in terms of atomistic mechanisms. In addition to his detailed description on modeling and simulation, the author stresses experimental approaches like AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) techniques for verification of theory. In this respect the book will benefit the whole nanotribology community, from graduate students who want to get the basics right up to researchers specializing in mechanical engineering, materials science, physics and chemistry.

Fundamentals of Friction by I.L. Singer,H. Pollock Pdf

Fundamentals of Friction, unlike many books on tribology, is devoted to one specific topic: friction. After introductory chapters on scientific and engineering perspectives, the next section contains the necessary background within the areas of contact mechanics, surfaces and adhesion. Then on to fracture, deformation and interface shear, from the macroscopic behavior of materials in frictional contact to microscopic models of uniform and granular interfaces. Lubrication by solids, liquids and gases is presented next, from classical flow properties to the reorganization of monolayers of molecules under normal and shear stresses. A section on new approaches at the nano- and atomic scales covers the physics and chemistry of interfaces, an array of visually exciting simulations, using molecular dynamics, of solids and liquids in sliding contact, and related AFM/STM studies. Following a section on machines and measurements, the final chapter discusses future issues in friction.

Analysis and Compensation of Kinetic Friction in Robotic and Mechatronic Control Systems by Michael Ruderman Pdf

Analysis and Compensation of Kinetic Friction in Robotic and Mechatronic Control Systems comprehensively covers kinetic friction in a robotics, mechatronics, and control engineering context. Providing the theory behind kinetic friction, as well as compensation methods and practical solutions, the text is a key companion to studying different control systems. Beginning with a clear introduction to the subject, the book goes on to include three main facets of kinetic friction, starting with phenomena of kinetic friction in drives. This chapter explains friction interfaces and friction effects. Following from this, the next chapter looks at motion dynamics with friction, which introduces dynamic system equations and focuses on both energy balance and dissipation. Finally, the book looks at compensation of friction in motion control, which summarises key compensation methods in controlled mechanical systems. Introducing various basic feedback control methods, including observer-based methods to compensate for kinetic friction, the text provides practical information that can be used in a wide variety of contexts not specific to particular systems or applications. This book will be of interest to students and industry workers in the field of robotics, mechanical systems and control engineering.

Surface Diagnostics In Tribology: Fundamental Principles And Applications by Yip-wah Chung,K Miyoshi Pdf

This book provides final year undergraduate students, graduate students, research scientists and engineers with an up-to-date overview of the power of using surface analytical techniques for probing complex solid surfaces and lubricants as well as for understanding their interactions in tribological systems. The first three introductory chapters illustrate the need for surface analysis in tribology and the essentials of the analytical techniques. Following these, eight chapters on applications give insight into the contribution of the major analytical techniques to tribology. These chapters are divided into three groups. The first group deals with the applications of surface analytical techniques to the study of the adhesion, friction, deformation, wear, structure and chemistry of solid surfaces at the atomic scale or in well-defined conditions. The second group focuses mainly on solid lubricants and tribological surface modifications. Lastly, the third group covers liquid lubricants in molecularly thin-film lubrication and in boundary lubrication and their interactions with surfaces.
