Friend on Freedom River by Gloria Whelan Pdf

In 1850 the Detroit River was a major track along the Underground Railroad -- the last step to freedom. The journey across the river was dangerous, especially in winter and especially for a 12-year-old boy. When Louis's father left him in charge of the farm he offered his son this advice, "If you don't know what to do, just do what you think I would have done." Louis relies upon his father's words of wisdom when a runaway slave and her two children come looking for safe passage. In the second title in our Tales of Young Americans series Gloria Whelan -- author of National Book Award winning Homeless Bird -- beautifully creates a suspenseful coming-of-age story while illuminating a difficult time in America's past. Ms. Whelan's narrative again shows the human spirit will forever shine brightly in dark times. Freedom River - part of our Young Americans series - will quickly become a favorite for its important message and look at history from a youngster's eye. Artist Gijsbert van Frankenhuyzen - a Sleeping Bear Press favorite - treats the material as only he can. Each illustrated page demonstrates the same mastery and devotion to his craft as the young heroes he brings to life.

River of Freedom by Caitlyn Kamminga,Adam Walters Pdf

River Of Freedom On May 19th, 2012 a documentary entitled, The Merikins premiered in Princes Town, Trinidad. There to present it to the audience was the former United States Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Ms. Beatrice Welters. In her speech to the audience Ambassador Welters said, “This story touched me deeply…the United States is a nation founded on the principle that we are all created equal and that our freedom is an inalienable right. But the government of the United States has not always lived up to that ideal. The struggle of the Merikins shows that desire for freedom is found in the hearts of every man, woman and child.” Inspired greatly by the film we decided to write a narrated piece of music about the journey of the Merikins and to tell the tale in the way we know best: through music, poetry and art. Three years later, we premiered our new work in the heart of the Company Villages at St. Mary’s Government Primary School in the south of Trinidad to members of the Merikin community who showed up in great numbers and welcomed us warmly. We are very grateful to the US Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago and the Vincent Wilkinson Foundation for giving us matching grants to research, write and premiere the work and to the Classical Music Development Foundation of Trinidad and Tobago and the Caribbean Network Arts and Education Foundation for their support in the workshops and the creation of this book.

Using Children's Literature Across the Curriculum by Catherine M. O'Callaghan Pdf

This resource uniquely offers preservice and inservice teachers templates for using quality children's literature to implement six themes across grades K-8. The themes are based on national curriculum standards and text sets are carefully selected to facilitate discussion, analysis, and problem solving across the grades. Using Children's Literature Across the Curriculum, provides teachers with a guide to using multilayered texts to facilitate students' attainment of critical literacy. It is designed to be a supplemental text to guide teachers in designing literacy instruction. The instructional sequence includes collaborative inquiry activities across the curriculum to extend each theme to math, science, technology and social studies. Teachers are shown how to incorporate family literacy with a component entitled 'Home School Connections' and to differentiate instruction for individual learners with a section entitled 'On Your Own Activities'. The theme concludes with a critical literacy activity that applies the content knowledge of the theme with collaborative inquiry. A unique feature of the handbook is the emphasis on performance based assessment with each instructional sequence containing two rubrics for the teacher to implement. The instructional sequences are meant as models for teachers to use in developing their own themes in order to facilitate critical literacy. These 'models' can be adjusted to fit the reading level of the students as teachers become more familiar with the text's structure and their students' needs.
