Costa Rica is one of the most sought after vacation destinations in the Americas with some of the world's most attractive natural surroundings teeming with wildlife. Most visitors spend years saving up for a trip of a lifetime, or perhaps even a honeymoon, but Joe decided to move there for ten months to get a closer look at life in and around Costa Rica. Over the course of his time abroad, Joe brings his experiences to life alongside the history of the region as he travels throughout Costa Rica and its Central American neighborhood with stops in Panama, El Salvador and Guatemala. Xenophobic expatriates, delicious food, vibrant market scenes, an epic battle with Mothra, and inevitable culture clashes all make an appearance in Talking Tico, leaving readers with a new impression of this fascinating region.
Transbordering Latin Americas by Clara Irazábal Pdf
This book examines transborder Latin American sociocultural and spatial conditions across the globe and at different scales, from gendered and racialized individuals to national and transnational organizations. Gathering scholars from the "spatial sciences"—architecture, urban design, urban planning, and geography—as well as sociology, anthropology, history, and economics, the volume explores these transbordering practices of place making and community building across cultural and nation-state borders, examining different agents (individuals, ethnic and cultural groups, NGOs, government agencies) that are engaged in transnational/transborder living and city-making practices, reconceiving notions of state, identity, and citizenship and showing how subjected populations resist, adapt, or coproduce transnational/transborder projects and, in the process, help shape and are shaped as transborder subjects.
My life started in the ghetto of Roxbury, Massachusetts, a mile away from the drug-infested neighborhood where Bobby Brown came up. My father left our family when I was one. My mother had five children, one of whom died in early childhood. My mother struggled every day to feed us—I’m sure many times not feeding herself. A lot of our food and Christmas toys came from the government. Despite all her struggles, my mother did everything in her power to give me an academic edge. After I won the Boston Mayor’s Award for academics when I graduated from the sixth grade, my mother colluded with a white family to put me on an academic and cultural Rocketship. This was the point where I had to begin to navigate my path mostly on my own, as my mother’s knowledge and experience regarding my new world was very limited. All I could do was to try to hold on. I attended the University of Massachusetts and a computer electronics class at Benjamin Franklin Institute, where IBM hired me. After 20 years in the world of high technology, I became disillusioned with corporate life and moved with my family to Costa Rica, where I had the pleasure of meeting a man named Dr. Deepak Chopra, who contacted me and invited my wife and I to join him at his private lunch with the presidential candidate of Costa Rica during his one-day conference. How? People always ask me: “Why, after 17 years, did you return from the paradise of Costa Rica to the U.S.?” This is my true story.
Education, Community Engagement and Sustainable Development by Nicole Blum Pdf
A growing body of research has given critical attention to diverse theories and practices of environmental education, and its potential contribution to addressing pressing global issues such as sustainable development and climate change. While much of this work has focused on perspectives and practices in Europe and North America, this book explores environmental learning within formal education, in programmes by non-governmental organisations, and in public education spaces in Monteverde, Costa Rica. The discussion also highlights the need for more research to understand the broader social and economic interactions between such efforts and the communities in which they are located.
Costa Rica from Arenal to Zapote by Elon Abroaders Pdf
"Eleven fresh-faced, starry-eyed students from Elon University cluelessly stumbled off a plane, not realizing that after the next four months, their lives would be forever changed. Costa Rica challenged their thoughts on institutions of culture through experiences abroad that made them return back to the United States a little less gringo, and a little more tico. From Arenal to Zapote is the students' collection of thoughts, stories, and reactions to the culture of which they were quickly becoming a part. Read and learn from their accounts about banana plantations, prostitution, and everything in-between in this compendium of essays"--Back cover

What’s Covered? Get to Know Costa Rica: Almost everyone passes through San José on their way to the beach or the mountains. This capital city isn’t much to look at, but it has great restaurants and nightlife and fascinating museums dedicated to gold and jade. You won’t want to linger long in the Central Valley, as it lacks any of the country’s big-name attractions. But there are quite a few day-trip possibilities, including exploring mountain villages, rafting through whitewater rapids, and gaping into the mouths of some of the country’s most accessible active volcanoes. The Northern Plains attract those who don’t like sitting still. After zipping along cables through the misty jungle of Monteverde Cloud Forest, windsurfing on glittering Lake Arenal, or watching the nightly fireworks of Arenal Volcano, you can reward yourself with a dip in the bubbly waters of Tabacón Hot Springs. If you came for beaches, the Northern Pacific is for you. Each has a unique personality: Flamingo’s endless stretch of sand draws sun worshippers; Tamarindo’s nightlife is legendary; Avellanas’s strong swells challenge surfers; Ostional’s nestling sea turtles bring nature lovers; and Papagayo Peninsula’s all-inclusive resorts provide every creature comfort. The Central Pacific area is not just for spring breakers. Drive down the coast to the cluster of small hotels and restaurants at Manuel Antonio. The national park, on a peninsula jutting into the ocean, has the easiest wildlife viewing on the planet. The South Pacific, also known as “The Amazon of Costa Rica,” has rustic lodges in Osa Peninsula that sit on the edge of the country’s wildest region. Hikes reveal toucans and scarlet macaws in the treetops, and boating trips often include swimming with whales and dolphins. Despite its name, Costa Rica’s Caribbean isn’t known for white-sand beaches or crystal-blue waters. Come here for spirited music, the tasty food, and the chance to mix with the Afro-Caribbean population. The coast also attracts turtle-watchers, as four different kinds nest at Tortuguero National Park. Note: This ebook edition is adapted from Fodor’s Costa Rica 2012, but differs in some content. Additionally, the ebook edition includes photographs and maps that will appear on black-and-white devices but are optimized for devices that support full-color images.
In the tradition of other great ex-patriot stories like The Sun Also Rises or All the Pretty Horses, Native Moments is a coming-of-age adventure set among the lush landscape of Costa Rica. After the death of his brother, Sanch Murray leaves for a surf trip as a way to cope and sets out on a quixotic search for an alternative to the American Dream. Set in 1999 Costa Rica, Sanch and his friend Jake Higdon wander the dirt roads of Tamarindo and surrounding areas chasing waves as a way to live out the romantic fantasy lifestyle of traveling surfers. Jake Higdon, six years Sanch's senior, takes on the role of the wise leader and Sanch as his young apprentice. Sanch's adventure leads to encounters with people who share world views he had never considered and could potentially shape his own changing perceptions about life. Through sometimes humorous episodes such as trying his hand as a matador at a roadside rodeo or in his not so humorous battle with dysentery, Sanch explores life's beauty and wonder alongside the darker undercurrents of humanity. Along his journey, Sanch befriends a shamanic traveler named Rob, young revolutionaries from Venezuela, numerous expatriates from around the world trying to escape whatever it is that keeps chasing them, and a beautiful local girl named Andrea, who Sanch suspects is a prostitute but can't help falling for.
This American author has now spent four decades being involved in Costa Rica’s terrestrial and marine habitats, documenting the challenges and triumphs of his attempts to make an environmentally conscious and sustainable living in this paradise. Jon Marañón offers a unique first-person account of nature and persons in conflict and the difficulties of meshing human existence into the recently pristine coastal rainforests of Costa Rica. His work promotes reader awareness of the natural environment, wildlife, ecosystems, and socioculture of this remote area of Costa Rica. Ecology and spirituality intertwine as he describes his journey in a mix of naturalist and lyrical prose that, along with humor and introspection, mark the style of The Gringo’s Hawk. The Gringo’s Hawk represents the culmination of Mr. Marañón’s social struggles and the roles he has played in conservation, education, social well-being, and in establishing national parks and marine reserves in his area.
