From the Darkness of Africa to the Light of America by Thomas E. Besolow Pdf
Excerpt from From the Darkness of Africa to the Light of America: The Story of an African Prince Considering that most of us have always lived amid the rush of our own hasty American life, and under the influence of our mighty, Christian civilization, have we not, in some measure, failed to behold the great and many needs of the millions who in Africa are enjoying the smallest volume of life, because the superstition and the heathenism of darker ages rule them with an iron sceptre, which bends them to the dust, and urges them to worship and to implore a cold, dead, barren moon to bless them, and to guide them? Away down through this brazen superstition, through the empty idolatry, and into the heart and mind of this humble African, there beamed a golden ray of the marvelous, life-giving light of the Saviour of the world. His whole soul became illuminated with the light of truth. Many have heard his humble testimony of how God redeemed him from the idolatry and human sacrifices of his people. Guanya Pau by Joseph Jeffrey Walters Pdf
The first book of long fiction by an African to be published in English, this novel tells the story of a young woman of the Vai people in Liberia. Guanya Pau, betrothed as a child to a much older, polygamous man, flees her home rather than be forced into marriage, and the novel recounts her subsequent efforts to reach the Christian community where the man she loves awaits her. Joseph Jeffrey Walters was a Vai man who converted to Christianity, and this, his only novel, is a remarkably complex work, embracing both Christian beliefs and a deep pride in his African heritage. This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction that locates the novel in the context of Vai culture and the history of African missions, and a rich selection of historical documents relating to the education of African women, the Vai writing system, and the author’s life.

African-American Exploration in West Africa by James Fairhead,Tim Geysbeek,Svend E. Holsoe,Melissa Leach Pdf
In the 1860s, as America waged civil war, several thousand African Americans sought greater freedom by emigrating to the fledgling nation of Liberia. While some argued that the new black republic represented disposal rather than emancipation, a few intrepid men set out to explore their African home. African-American Exploration in West Africa collects the travel diaries of James L. Sims, George L. Seymour, and Benjamin J. K. Anderson, who explored the territory that is now Liberia and Guinea between 1858 and 1874. These remarkable diaries reveal the wealth and beauty of Africa in striking descriptions of its geography, people, flora, and fauna. The dangers of the journeys surface, too -- Seymour was attacked and later died of his wounds, and his companion, Levin Ash, was captured and sold into slavery again. Challenging the notion that there were no black explorers in Africa, these diaries provide unique perspectives on 19th-century Liberian life and life in the interior of the continent before it was radically changed by European colonialism.

Slavery in Africa by Suzanne Miers,Igor Kopytoff Pdf
This collection of sixteen short papers, together with a complex and very much longer introductory essay by the editors on "African 'Slavery' as an Institution of Marginality," constitutes an impressive attempt by anthropologists and historians to explore, describe, and analyze some of the various kinds of human bondage within a number of precolonial African societies. It is important to note that in spite of the precolonial emphasis of the volume, all of the essays are based at least partly on anthropological or ethnohistorical field research carried out since 1959. All but one have been augmented greatly by more conventional historical research in published as well as archival sources. And although the volume's focus is upon the structures and conditions of servitude within the several African societies described, many of the essays illustrate, and some discuss, the conceptual as well as the practical difficulties of separating the institutions and customs of "domestic" African slavery from those of the European dominated commercial slave trade in which many of the societies participated. -- from JSTOR http://www.jstor.org (May 24, 2013).

Historical Dictionary of Liberia by Elwood D. Dunn,Amos J. Beyan,Carl Patrick Burrowes Pdf
Originally formed to harbor freed slaves and Americans returning to Africa, Liberia once was a land of hope. That was shattered by a long Civil War that shook its very foundation. Today's Liberia is glimpsed in this second edition. Building on the first edition, this updated volume focuses on the personalities, from the founders of Liberia, to the soldiers who are responsible simultaneously for destruction and the hope of stability. Along with these people, various social and ethnic groups, political parties and labor movements, economic entities and natural resources are profiled in this updated work. A new chronology of Liberia is included, and a selected bibliography suggests further readings for the scholar.
