From the Socratics to the Socratic Schools by Ugo Zilioli Pdf

In the two golden centuries that followed the death of Socrates, ancient philosophy underwent a tremendous transformation that culminated in the philosophical systematizations of Plato, Aristotle and the Hellenistic schools. Fundamental figures other than Plato were active after the death of Socrates; his immediate pupils, the Socratics, took over his legacy and developed it in a variety of ways. This rich philosophical territory has however been left largely underexplored in the scholarship. This collection of eleven previously unpublished essays by leading scholars fills a gap in the literature, providing new insight into the ethics, metaphysics, and epistemology as developed by key figures of the Socratic schools. Analyzing the important contributions that the Socratics and their heirs have offered ancient philosophical thought, as well as the impact these contributions had on philosophy as a discipline, this book will appeal to researchers and scholars of Classical Studies, as well as Philosophy and Ancient History.

Socrates and the Socratic Schools by Oswald J. Reichel Pdf

Excerpt from Socrates and the Socratic Schools In offering to the English reader a new edition of that part of Dr Zeller's Philosophie der Griechen which treats of Socrates and the imperfect Socratic Schools, the translator is not unaware of the difficulties of the task which he has undertaken. For if, on the one hand, such a translation he too literal, the reader may find it more difficult to understand than the original, and expend a labour in disentangling the thread of a sentence which were better spent in grasping its meaning. If, on the other hand, too much freedom be allowed, the charge may be justly preferred, that the rendering does not faithfully represent the original. The present translator has endeavoured to steer a middle course between these two extremes, aiming at reproducing the meaning of Dr Zeller's work, whilst reducing the sentences, where it seemed necessary, by breaking them up. Socrates and the Political Community by Mary P. Nichols Pdf

This book takes a fresh look at Socrates as he appeared to three ancient writers: Aristophanes, who attacked him for his theoretical studies; Plato, who immortalized him in his dialogues; and Aristotle, who criticized his political views. It addresses the questions of the interrelation of politics and philosophy by looking at Aristophanes’ Clouds, Plato’s Republic, and Book II of Aristotle’s Politics—three sides of a debate on the value of Socrates’ philosophic life. Mary Nichols first discusses the relation between Aristophanes and Plato, showing that the city as Socrates’ place of activity in the Republic resembles the philosophic thinktank mocked in Aristophanes’ Clouds. By representing the extremes of the Republic’s city, Plato shows that the dangers attributed by Aristophanes to the city are actually inherent in political life itself. They were to be moderated by Socratic political philosophy rather than Aristophanean comedy. Nichols concludes by showing how Aristotle addressed the question at issue between Plato and Aristophanes when he founded his political science. Judging Plato’s and Aristophanes’ positions as partial, Nichols argues that Aristotle based his political science on the necessity to philosophy of political involvement and the necessity to politics of philosophical thought.

Plato’s Socrates, Philosophy and Education by James M. Magrini Pdf

This book develops for the readers Plato’s Socrates’ non-formalized “philosophical practice” of learning-through-questioning in the company of others. In doing so, the writer confronts Plato’s Socrates, in the words of John Dewey, as the “dramatic, restless, cooperatively inquiring philosopher" of the dialogues, whose view of education and learning is unique: (1) It is focused on actively pursuing a form of philosophical understanding irreducible to truth of a propositional nature, which defies “transfer” from practitioner to pupil; (2) It embraces the perennial “on-the-wayness” of education and learning in that to interrogate the virtues, or the “good life,” through the practice of the dialectic, is to continually renew the quest for a deeper understanding of things by returning to, reevaluating and modifying the questions originally posed regarding the “good life.” Indeed Socratic philosophy is a life of questioning those aspects of existence that are most question-worthy; and (3) It accepts that learning is a process guided and structured by dialectic inquiry, and is already immanent within and possible only because of the unfolding of the process itself, i.e., learning is not a goal that somehow stands outside the dialectic as its end product, which indicates erroneously that the method or practice is disposable. For learning occurs only through continued, sustained communal dialogue.

My First Socrates (and the Pre-Socratics) by Enrico Valente Pdf

Has philosophy always intrigued and fascinated you but also frightened you because of the complexity of its content and the philosophers' abstruse language? Or have you studied it at school without understanding it much and perhaps in an uninspiring way? This book is designed for those approaching philosophy for the first time and wanting to understand and love it without too much effort and in an enjoyable way. My First Socrates (and the pre-Socratics), the first issue of the Great Philosophers series, will take you on a fascinating journey to discover the beginnings of Western philosophy. We will introduce the pre-Socratic philosophers, from the Ionian to the Eleatic schools. We will see who was the first philosopher to speak about being, we will present Zeno's paradoxes, Heraclitus' thought and the sophists Protagoras and Gorgias. Some pages will also be devoted to Greek tragedy and its three most illustrious playwrights, Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides. Socrates, the philosopher who let himself die for the truth, will obviously be given ample space. We will conclude with the schools of thought that arose after Socrates' death.
