Frost on my Moustache by Tim Moore Pdf

Guided by the fastidious journals of an eminent Victorian adventurer by the name of Lord Dufferin, Time Moore sets off to prove his mettle in the most stunningly inhospitable place on Earth-the Arctic. Armed only with his searing wit, wicked humor, and seasickness pills, our pale suburbanite-wracked by second thoughts of tactical retreat-confronts mind-numbing cold, blood-thirsty polar bears, a convoy of born-again Vikings, and, perhaps most chilling of all, herring porridge. When he is not humiliating himself through displays of ignorance and incompetence, Moore casts a sharp eye on the local flora and fauna, immersing readers in the splendors and wonders of this treacherously beautiful region. A deliciously and inexhaustibly funny book, Frost on My Moustache deserves to be placed alongside those by Evelyn Waugh, Eric Newby, and Bill Bryson.

David Jason: My Life by David Jason Pdf

Winner of the National Book Awards Autobiography of the Year The long-awaited autobiography of one of Britain's best-loved actors Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Giving up on an unloved career as an electrician, he turned his attention to acting and soon, through a natural talent for making people laugh, found himself working with the leading lights of British comedy in the 1960s and '70s: Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Bob Monkhouse and Ronnie Barker. Barker would become a mentor to David, leading to hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours. It wasn't until 1981, kitted out with a sheepskin jacket, a flat cap, and a clapped-out Reliant Regal, that David found the part that would capture the nation's hearts: the beloved Derek 'Del Boy' Trotter in Only Fools and Horses. Never a one-trick pony, he had an award-winning spell as TV's favourite detective Jack Frost, took a country jaunt as Pop Larkin in the Darling Buds of May, and even voiced a crime-fighting cartoon rodent in the much-loved children's show Danger Mouse. But life hasn't all been so easy: from missing out on a key role in Dad's Army to nearly drowning in a freak diving accident, David has had his fair share of ups and downs, and has lost some of his nearest and dearest along the way. David's is a touching, funny and warm-hearted story, which charts the course of his incredible five decades at the top of the entertainment business. He's been a shopkeeper and a detective inspector, a crime-fighter and a market trader, and he ain't finished yet. As Del Boy would say, it's all cushty.

Beyond the Burning Times by Philip Johnson,Gus diZerega Pdf

A fascinating dialogue between a Pagan and a Christian. Gus DiZerega, an American pagan and and an academic engages in debate with Philip Johnson, an Australian Christian theologian. The two debate questions such as the nature of spirituality, who or what is deity, how humans relate to the divine, the sacred feminine, gender and sexuality, and the teachings and claims of Jesus. At the end of the book another Pagan writer comments on what Philip Johnson has argued, and another Christian comments on what Gus DiZerega has argued. Paganism is acknowledged as the fastest growing 'religion' in western Europe and this book helps readers to engage with it and with orthodox Christian belief.

Travellers’ Tales of Old Japan by Compiled by Michael Wise Pdf

Travellers in search of the unexpected found it in Old Japan. Here was a strange land indeed, where women blackened their teeth, men wore tattoos in lieu of clothing, and the whole family bathed together “with as much freedom as a flock of ducks”. Visitors came in thousands and eagerly put pen to paper, commenting on everything Japanese, from curios to coolies, sake to samurai, etiquette to earthquakes. They left behind—in letters, diaries and memoirs—personal impressions of Old Japan, sometimes as revealing of the writers themselves as the country they came to visit. This book features 74 of these traveller’s tales—many of them funny, others serious, but all a pleasure to read

On Top of the World by Erla María Marteinsdóttir Pdf

"This thesis examines British travel narratives of Iceland during the 19th and 20th centuries within the rubric of postcolonial criticism. Ch. 1 gives an overview of accounts of Iceland up until the 18th century, and ch. 2 looks at sections of narratives from the turn of the 19th century, such as Joseph Bank's Letters from Iceland (1772), J.T. Stanley's Journals of the Stanley Expedition, George MacKenzie's Travels in Iceland (1812), William Hooker's Journal of a Tour in Iceland (1811) and Ebenezer Henderson's Iceland (1818). Ch. 3 looks at Lord Dufferin's Letters from High Latitudes (1876). while Jón Stefánsson's 'Introduction' to that text is the subject of ch. 4. Ch. 5 is on Letters from Iceland by W.H. Auden and Louis MacNeice (1936), and ch. 6 on Tim Moore's Frost on My Moustache (1999). An epilogue follows, pointing to the Human Genome Project and genetic databases of Iceland as the latest chapter in Iceland's colonial history. A close reading of British travel narratives of Iceland suggests that British imperial agents (travelers, scientists or scholars), were engaged in an imperial relationship with Iceland and the Icelanders. Banks and Stanley, were direct proponents of the idea that Iceland become a British colony. Lord Dufferin's narrative strategies imply a colonizing agenda at work. Iceland is frequently distanced from modern reality both temporally and spatially. It is spoken of in terms of its precolonial glory, while its colonial reality is ignored"--Leaves v-vi.
