Discourse and Pragmatics in Functional Grammar by John H. Connolly,Roel M. Vismans,Christopher S. Butler,Richard A. Gatward Pdf

The contents of this volume are a selection from the papers given at the Sixth International Conference on Functional Grammar (ICFG), which was held in York, at the University College of Ripon and York St John, from 18 to 22 August, 1994. Functional Grammar as understood in the ICFGs and in this volume is the linguistic model as proposed by Simon Dik, and to date most extensively described and discussed in Dik (1989). The indebtedness of the FG-community to Simon Dik, who died six months after the conference was held, is great indeed. The editors hope that this volume is a fitting tribute to his work.

Verbal Periphrases in a Functional Grammar of Spanish by Hella Olbertz Pdf

Contains a description of all the different types of verbal periphrases used in modern peninsular Spanish. Defining periphrases as "productive verbal constructions with a partially grammaticized finite verb," the study strives to account for the partly lexical and partly grammatical status of periphrases within the theoretical framework of Functional Grammar--which views language as a tool for verbal communication rather than as an autonomous system. The study finds that, for certain complexities of periphrase usage, Functional Grammar needs to be adapted. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Invitation to Systemic Functional Linguistics Through the Cardiff Grammar by Robin P. Fawcett Pdf

This short book is intended for two groups of readers, and so is two books in one. First, it is a genuinely introductory introduction to Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) for the 21st century. But this is also a book for experienced linguists who are interested in a scholarly comparison of the two main current versions of SFG? the Sydney Grammar and the Cardiff Grammar (e.g. teachers of the first group of readers).

A Theory of Syntax for Systemic Functional Linguistics by Robin P. Fawcett Pdf

This book describes and evaluates alternative approaches within Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) to representing the structure of language at the level of form. It assumes no prior knowledge of SFL, and can therefore be read as an introduction to current issues within the theory. It will interest any linguist who takes a functional approach to understanding language.Part 1 summarizes the major developments in the forty years of SFL's history, including alternative approaches within Halliday's own writings and the emergence of the "Cardiff Grammar" as an alternative to the "Sydney Grammar." It questions the theoretical status of the 'multiple structure' representations in Halliday's influential "Introduction to Functional Grammar" (1994), demonstrating that Halliday's model additionally needs an integrating syntax such as that described in Part 2.Part 2 specifies and discusses the set of 'categories' and 'relationships' that are needed in a theory of syntax for a modern, computer-implementable systemic functional grammar. The theoretical concepts are exemplified at every point, usually from English but occasionally from other languages. The book is both a critique of Halliday's current theory of syntax and the presentation of an alternative version of SFL that is equally systemic and equally functional.

Lexical Functional Grammar by Mary Dalrymple Pdf

Presents an overview and introduction to Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG), a theory of the content and representation of different aspects of linguistic structure and the relations that hold between them. This book also presents a theory of semantics and the syntax-semantics interface.

The Structure of the Lexicon in Functional Grammar by Hella Olbertz,Kees Hengeveld,Jesús Sánchez García Pdf

In functional grammar, the lexicon plays a central role. Lexical items form the basic building blocks around which the structure of a clause is built. This book examines 5 aspects of the role of the lexicon in functional grammar.

Functional Grammar by Alexander V. Bondarko Pdf

Every grammar has to a greater or lesser extent a functional aspect. In this book, Bondarko provides a comprehensive discourse on the theoretical foundations of grammar, concentrating on functional-semantic fields, with emphasis on the diversity of their structural types. Criteria for distinguishing between linguistically structured meaning and non-linguistic cognitive content is developed in a discussion on “the Category of Aspect and its Environment” which includes an analysis of aspectual opposition according to the Prague School. Special attention is also paid to analysing polycentric fields and, specifically, taxis in the Russian language. The book is divided into three sections: Functional Grammar: Subject Matter and Goals — Structural Types of Functional-Semantic Fields — Categorial Situations. This book is intended for those interested in the general theory of linguistics.

Article Usage in English by Monika Klages-Kubitzki Pdf

It results in the redefinition of the underlying clause structure and the identification of a number of semantic operators, which serve to explain the reference of any particular noun phrase. On this basis, Part II presents the development and trial of a computer-based self-teaching programme on article usage in English.

Semantics and Syntax in Lexical Functional Grammar by Mary Dalrymple Pdf

This introduction to and overview of the "glue" approach is the first book to bring together the research of the major contributors to the field. A new, deductive approach to the syntax-semantics interface integrates two mature and successful lines of research: logical deduction for semantic composition and the Lexical Functional Grammar (LFG) approach to the analysis of linguistic structure. It is often referred to as the "glue" approach because of the role of logic in "gluing" meanings together. The "glue" approach has attracted significant attention from, among others, logicians working in the relatively new and active field of linear logic; linguists interested in a novel deductive approach to the interface between syntax and semantics within a nontransformational, constraint-based syntactic framework; and computational linguists and computer scientists interested in an approach to semantic composition that is grounded in a conceptually simple but powerful computational framework. This introduction to and overview of the "glue" approach is the first book to bring together the research of the major contributors to the field. A New Architecture for Functional Grammar by J. Lachlan Mackenzie,María de los Ángeles Gómez-González Pdf

This volume, which represents a major advance on Simon Dik's final statement of the theory (1997), lays the foundation for the future evolution of FG towards a Functional Discourse Grammar. It rises to the double challenge of specifying the interface between discourse and grammar and of detailing the expression rules that link semantic representation and morphosyntactic form. The opening chapter, by Kees Hengeveld, sets out in programmatic form a new architecture for FG which both preserves the best of the traditional model and offers a place for numerous recent insights. The remaining chapters are devoted to refining and developing the programme laid down by Hengeveld, bringing in data from a range of languages as well as theoretical insights inspired by adjoining frameworks. Of special interest are an account by Matthew Anstey of how current proposals arise from the history of FG and various chapters in which the model is brought much closer to an account of real-time language production, notably including the first ever detailed account of the workings of expression rules, by Dik Bakker and Anna Siewierska. The final chapter, also by Hengeveld, draws together the findings of the various chapters, culminating in an elaborated model that represents the most sophisticated statement of Functional Grammar currently available. The volume thus gives a coherent account of FG as a theory which combines formal explicitness with a broad account of language functions.
