Excerpt from A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey: Comprehending a General View of Its Physical and Moral Condition, Together With a Topographical and Statistical Account of Its Counties, Towns, Villages, Canals, Rail Roads, &C Upon the clay and loam soils, oak grows abundantly; frequently of great size, and of quality much valued in the construction of ships. It is the common timber of the western border, and covers almost exclusively the central portion of the county of Cape May. In the sandy region, are extensive swamps which bear the beautiful and valuable white cedar, much sought for fencing, and which sells readily at from one to three hundred dollars the acre. A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey by Thomas F. Gordon Pdf

Excerpt from A Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey: Comprehending a General View of Its Physical and Moral Condition, Together With a Topographical and Statistical Account of Its Counties, Towns, Villages, Canals, Rail Roads, Map Accompanied The soil of this alluvial district consists of sand and clay, sometimes one overlay ing the other; but frequently intimately blended, forming a tolerably fertile loam, which prevails on its northern and western border with a variable breadth. Above Salem, this breadthis from five to twelve miles, but below that town it is sometimes contracted to a mile, East of this strip of loam, and west of the marsh which girds the sea shore, lies an immense sandy plain, scarce broken by any inequality, and originally covered by a pine. And shrub-oak forest - a great portion of which has been once, and some of it twice, cut over. There are many square miles on which there is not a human inhabitant, and where the deer, foxes and rabbits are abundant. And the wolf and the bear find a lair to protect their race from extirpation. But in many places the echo is awakened by the woodman's axe, and the louder din of the forge hammer, and the forest glares with the light of the furnace or glass house. In this sandy desert there are found veins of onerous soil, which yield a compensatory crop of corn and rye to the labours of the husbandman. Gazetteer of the State of New York by John Homer French Pdf

French's unsurpassed Gazetteer of the State of New York is a complete history & description of every county, city, town, village, & locality in New York. But more than that it is a record of the founders & early settlers of practically every locality in the state-an astonishing achievement & the reason that the book has remained among the top genealogical reference works for New York State. Of course, no single person could have generated all this information on his own, so under the supervision of J.H. French "surveyors & agents were instructed to visit every city, town, & village, to search records, examine documents, consult the best living, printed, & manuscript authorities, & to make returns to the general office of all the reliable matter & information obtained." Thus was created an accurate & comprehensive gazetteer, with descriptions of each county, city, town, & village arranged according to a uniform plan (of more value today to the genealogist than ever before). Information provided for each locality includes founding (& founders), early settlements (& settlers), historical sketch to the time of writing, loading institutions, schools, & churches, prominent & representative citizens, stories of general & local interest, statistics from state censuses, & names of every natural & man made topographical feature. Preceding this core part of the Gazetteer is a full 150-page survey of the government, topography, & institutions of the state of New York. Outstanding as the Gazetteer is, its usefulness as a research tool is severely limited by the lack of an index to the thousands of narnes that appear in the text & footnotes. But this reprint edition puts an end to this unfortunate situation, as it incorporates Frank Place's Index of Names, a 16000-name index first published in 1962 by the Cortland County Historical Society. In 1969 the Society issued a second printing of the Index incorporating a "Supplement" of additions & corrections, & a third printing in 1983 included a "Supplementary Index to Place Names." With the Society's permission, we have incorporated the final index edition of 1983 with our reprint of the Gazetteer, making it the most complete & the most useful edition ever published.

F. Killenberger's Pocket Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey (Classic Reprint) by F. Killenberger Pdf

Excerpt from F. Killenberger's Pocket Gazetteer of the State of New Jersey One of the Middle Atlantic States and one of the original thirteen, is bounded N. by New York, E. by the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean, S. by the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay, and W. by the Delaware Bay and River, which separate it from Delaware and Pennsylvania. It covers an area of 7815 square miles, its greatest length being 167 1/2 miles from lat. 38 56' to 41 21' N., with an extreme breadth of 59 miles in W. Ion. 73 5 ' and 75 33'. At the narrowest point, between Bordentown and South Amboy, the State is about 35 miles in width. It has a direct coast line of 120 miles, and besides its bordering rivers, the Hudson and Delaware, its principal streams are the Passaic, Hackensack, and Raritan. Topographically New Jersey is characterized by three well marked divisions. The northern portion of the State is hilly and mountainous, being traversed in a direction S. E. and N. W. by the Blue or Kittatinny and the Highland ranges of mountains, the former of which rise to an altitude of 1800 feet near the New York line, and thence form an unbroken ridge to "the Delaware Water Gap," while the latter reach their highest point at Rutherford's Hill or Hamburg Mountain, which is 1488 feet above the sea. Between these ranges lies the beautiful and fertile Kittatinny Valley, about 39 miles in length by 10 in breadth, and at an elevation of from 500 to 650 feet. Some twenty miles east of the Highland Range the Palisades, a wall of perpendicular trap-rocks, from 200 to 500 feet high, stretch along the western bank of the Hudson for 15 miles, forming one of the grandest features of its scenery. The central portion of the State is a rolling country, and the remaining three-fifths extending south and eastward, are nearly level, the Navesink Hills opposite Sandy Hook, 375 feet above the sea, being the principal elevations. Much of the southern part is sandy and covered by pine forests. The five geological belts crossing the State from N. E. to S. W. abound in mineral wealth. The Silurian and Devonian formations of the N. W. furnish large quantities of excellent roofing-slate, building and flagstones, magnesian limestone and rich hematites.
