As the reptile-keeping hobby has grown, keepers and breeders have sought species that thrive best in the captive habitat. Bearded Dragons are one of the best examples of this. Beautiful, tame and interesting, bearded dragons certainly draw a considerable amount of interest from reptile enthusiasts, but it is their moderate size, hardy nature and generalist feeding habits that make them so well-suited for captivity. However, bearded dragons do require habitats and husbandry regimens that satisfy their needs. Accordingly, it is imperative that would-be bearded dragon keepers learn as much as possible about these remarkable lizards, to ensure their pet enjoys the highest quality of life possible. The author, Ben Team, is an environmental educator and author with over 16 years of professional reptile-keeping experience. The Lizard Keeper's Handbook by Phillipe De Vosjoli Pdf

The Lizard Keeper's Manual by Philippe de Vosjoli intends to provide real detailed information for all devoted lizard owners who wish to provide the very best of care for their pets. The author states in the foreword, "In terms of the herpetoculture of reptiles, the keeping of lizards is probably the most challenging." He explains that "Lizards demonstrate a great diversity of adaptations and specializations," and thus keepers need the very best advice and soundest information possible, which is what The Lizard Keeper's Manual provides to its readers. In over 200 pages, this colorful volume analyzes the needs of insect-eating lizards, of which there are literally thousands of species. Some lizards (the ones with generic housing and dietary requirements) are easy to maintain, though others have very specific needs (in terms of temperature, diet, humidity, etc.). As stated in the introduction, "The purpose of this book is to give herpetoculturists, both beginners and those more experienced, as well as pet industry personnel, a broad base of knowledge that will allow them to successfully keep a variety of insect-eating lizards." Colorfully illustrated, The Lizard Keeper's Manual provides chapter-length coverage on the following topics: selecting the right species of lizard, locating and purchasing a healthy lizard, quarantine and acclimation, types of vivaria, enclosures, vivarium design, heating, cooling/hibernation, lighting, humidity/ventilation, feeding/nutrition, handling, shipping/receiving, and diseases and disorders. The author recommends a number of excellent species for keepers, including geckos, chameleons, skinks, agamids, monitors, anoles, basilisks, as well as other large and miniature species. The chapter titled "Essential Concepts" is a crash course in herpetology, offering the reader an overview of the ontogeny (life stages), climatic and landscape factors, diet, water, and diseases of the lizard family. The chapter "General Guidelines for Popular Insect-Eating Lizards," which covers over thirty different lizards in terms of their requirements and descriptions, is an outstanding resource for lizard keepers looking to expand the population of their vivaria. Bearded Dragons : a Guide from a Veterinarian on Caring for Your Bearded Dragon How to Make Your Dragon Live for 12 Years Or More by Donald Wilson Pdf

Bearded dragons make great pets as they love human beings and actually like to be handled by them. These are docile creatures but they can be aggressive if their space is being invaded by another animal. Bearded dragons usually live for ten years, but with the right care, which includes the right temperature, food, and habitat, they have been known to live for longer. Bearded dragons love to eat, but they should never be overfed as this could lead to paralysis in the younger ones who may eventually die. Their diet should include insects, fruits and vegetables as they are omnivorous by nature. They are susceptible to certain diseases such as calcium deficiency, gastrointestinal and fungal infections and should be taken to a Herp veterinarian if you see them displaying the symptoms of these illnesses. Like their other reptile counterparts, the bearded dragon is also prone to bacterial diseases such as salmonella, and as such, when you bathe, touch, handle and clean their cage, you need to ensure that you hands are properly washed both before and after any of these activities. Rubber gloves are highly recommended especially for use when you are cleaning their habitat to avoid the spread of bacteria. He however has a special love for turtles and bearded dragons. He grew up as an only child but he never craved another sibling due to the fact that he always had animals around him. He always wanted a turtle or a bearded dragon but his parents decided that they were much too busy to spend the time that was needed to care for these animals, and he was too young at one point, and then way too busy himself with both school and athletics by the time he got to the age where he was old enough to look after one. As such, it was not until he was out of college and settled in his career that he decided to get not one, but two turtles; a Red eared Slider and a Painted Turtle and one male and one female bearded dragon. He knows all there is to know about turtles and bearded dragons and enjoys sharing his vast knowledge about them with all those who are interested in learning about these creatures just for their general knowledge but also those who are considering them as pets. He sees his turtles as his lifetime friends as they are among the longest living creatures in existence and although they do take a lot of care, it is completely worth it to him and he loves his friendly little bearded dragons who close their eyes when he rubs their heads.

Green Anoles by Philippe De Vosjoli Pdf

A popular beginner's lizard, the green anole is the perfect introduction to the world of reptiles and continues to be popular among new herp lovers. These tiny, neat little lizards with the intense black eyes have suffered the fate of goldfish, as they've been marketed by pet shops as cheap, easy care, insect-eating reptiles. In order to keep green anoles thriving in their vivaria, pet owners must approach their husbandry with care and respect: Philippe de Vosjoli's Green Anoles provides the precise information necessary to reach that goal. The book begins with a chapter about the characteristics and behavior, natural history, and anatomy of green anoles, all of which is critical information for a keep to better understand the needs of his or her pet. As pets, green anoles are best kept in their vivaria and not handled, so the setup of a beautifully landscaped vivarium with proper lighting, heat, humidity, ventilation, and substrate is key. This Advanced Vivarium Systems title offers complete information about housing, feeding and nutrition, diseases and disorders, and breeding as well as how to set up naturalistic vivaria for one or more anoles or a community of anoles and compatible species. The chapter on other anoles recommends some very attractive species for the beginning lizard keeper to expand his anole family, such as the brown anole, big-headed anole, Cuban (or knight) anole, and Jamaican anole. The finale chapter on compatible species includes descriptions and photographs of a half dozen interesting options, such as the flying gecko, pigmy skink, and green tree frog. Resources and index included.

The Green Iguana Manual by Philippe De Vosjoli,Susan Donoghue,Roger Klingenberg,David Blair Pdf

It's hard to resist a friendly dinosaur, and the green iguana's enormous popularity rests on that amusing truism. This large lizard presents few difficulties and for keepers and can live for a couple of decades. One of the authors' purposes of The Green Iguana Manual is to promote responsible ownership for this noble lizard that can grow to be the size of a medium size dog with an unusually long, leathery tail! The Green Iguana Manual takes a close look at the characteristics of this species that have made these attractive lizards so amazingly popular in the pet world as well as their lifelong requirements. Author and herp expert Philippe de Vosjoli is joined by iguana specialists Dr. Roger Klingenberg, Dr. Susan Donoghue, and David Blair, who each contribute special chapters to this up-to-date and authoritative guide. This colorfully illustrated guide provides excellent general guidelines for keepers who wish to add a green iguana to their vivarium and maintain their "prehistoric" pet in excellent health and condition. The authors provide an introduction to basic iguana characteristics including distribution, size, longevity, and varieties and morphs, to help beginners better understand the anatomy and behavior of these fascinating lizards. This Advanced Vivarium Systems title includes information about selecting a healthy green iguana, handling, housing needs, breeding, and life stages. Dr. Donoghue provides the chapter "Diet and Feeding Management," which discusses food sources, supplementation, and feeding guidelines for green iguanas of all ages. Dr. Klingenberg provides the chapter on diseases and disorders, which covers nutritional and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, reproductive disorders, parasites, and environmental issues. The chapter concludes with a very useful five-page troubleshooting chart for common disorders. The book also discusses the iguanas of the West Indies (chapter by Blair) as well as seven other iguanid lizards, such as the spiny-tailed iguana, Fiji Island iguana, and chuckwallas.

The scientific name for this genus is 'Pogona' and they are also colloquially referred to as 'beardies.' The lizards within the genus gained the name 'bearded dragon' due to the extraordinary 'beard' located on the underside of the lizard's throat. In the wild bearded dragons can commonly be found basking on rocks or on the branches of trees due to the species adept ability to climb. They are found throughout Australia in a wide range of habitats ranging from deserts to shrubland and woodlands. Due to their hardy nature and interesting appearance bearded dragons have become a very popular pet and are fairly easy to care for in comparison to other exotic lizard species.
