According to A (xi. 31) even Terah when he set out with Abram had Canaan in view as the goal of the migration. Here the migration is represented as one willed by God and made known by Him to Abram. It was part of the divine plan of salvation to use more active remedies In face of the growing deterioration of mankind,3 and in Abram to choose and prepare a man who should be the foundation-stone of a kingdom of God which was to be set up among men. A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis by James Gracey Murphy Pdf

Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on the Book of Genesis: With a New Translation In introducing to the American public Dr. Murphy's Commentary on Genesis, I would commend it as a timely antidote to much of the negative and destructive criticism upon the Pentateuch which has so largely obtained in Germany, and of late in England also, rather than as a complete solution of the many and vexed questions in language, in science, and in history which pertain to the so-called "Books of Moses." The merits of Dr. Murphy's work are a nice critical analysis of the text, a candid consideration of all alleged difficulties, a common-sense view of the principles of interpretation, and a philosophical clearness and comprehensiveness in the statement of inference or of doctrine. It consists of an exact literal translation of such passages as contain either verbal or grammatical difficulties, and of a critical and exegetical commentary, based upon the grammatical construction of the text, and framed in view of the best lights of modern criticism and science. Thus, in the narratives of the creation and the deluge, our author unfolds step by step the literal meaning of the sacred writer, and evolves from the Hebrew a sense which well accords with the facts of astronomical and geological science. A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on Genesis (Classic Reprint) by John Skinner Pdf

Excerpt from A Critical and Exegetical Commentary on Genesis In conclusion, I have to express my thanks, first of all, to two friends by whose generous assistance my labour has been considerably lightened: to Miss E. I. M. Boyd, m.a., who has rendered me the greatest service in collecting material from books, and to the Rev. J. G. Morton, m.a., who has corrected the proofs, verified all the scriptural references, and compiled the Index. My last word of all must be an acknowledgment of profound and grateful obligation to Dr. Driver, the English Editor of the series, for his unfailing interest and encouragement during the progress of the work, and for numerous criticisms and suggestions, especially on points of philology and archae. The Early Narratives of Genesis (Classic Reprint) by James Orr Pdf

Excerpt from The Early Narratives of Genesis The subject A nave Men asked to speak on is a large one, and is complicated with many questions - critical, archaeological, scientific, exegetical. You will therefore bear with me if many points have to be touched upon in a cursory manner, and if some things have to be omitted altogether on which you would probably wish to hear me Speak. The subject is the Early Narratives in the Book of Genesis. By the Early Narratives are to be understood the first eleven chapters of the Book - those which pre cede the times of Abraham. These chapters present peculiarities of their own, and I confine attention to them, although the critical treatment applied to them is not confined to these chapters, but extends through out the whole Book of Genesis, the Book of Exodus, and the later history with much the same result in reducing them to legend. The Pastor's Library by Robert A. Yost Pdf

In the spirit of Cyril Barber’s classic work from the 1970s, The Minister’s Library, Robert Yost provides students and pastors with expert guidance on building a working ministerial library. From Old and New Testament languages, lexical aids, and grammatical tools, to commentaries and theologies as well as pastoral resources, Yost is a trustworthy guide through the multiplicity of books that seem to just keep rolling off the presses. Far more than just a guide to commentaries as are so many works today, this resource is a balanced pastoral tool for pastors and students who are overwhelmed by the proliferation of literature in the fields of biblical and pastoral studies.
