Genesis of Nature and the Nature of Genesis by Norman Parker Pdf

Creation and Evolution are topics which raise some hard questions: How did Nature start? (What is the real "e;origin of species"e;?) Were living things created by God, or did they evolve? (or both ?) How long ago did it all happen? What do the fossils actually tell us? Why are we still arguing about Darwin 130 years after his death? These questions are from a grey area where science, philosophy and religious belief overlap. The scientists themselves do not agree about the answers. This beginning of Nature: is it a matter of Revelation, or Folk Tale, or science? How much of the science of the past is "e;Just So story"e;?

The Serpent's Promise by Steve Jones Pdf

A unique contribution to the God/religion debate: a scientific take on the Bible that doesn't take sides. Many of the subjects studied by physicists or by biologists are found in the texts of the world's religions: the origins of the universe, of life and of mankind; fate, sex, age and death; and the prospects of eternal life or of fiery doom. The Bible is a handbook for understanding Nature and, in its own way, it succeeds. As a factual account, of course, it is out of date, but many of its statements can be rephrased in modern terms. Distinguished geneticist Steve Jones has done that: written a rivetingly accessible work on recent advances in our understanding of ourselves, using the Bible as a framework. His narrative is structured around the Good Book's grand themes, from Genesis to Revelations, and weaves a series of unexpected facts into a coherent whole. The struggle of rationalism with its opposite has, after decades of torpor, returned to centre stage. Polemics against and in favour of religion and atheism fill the shelves. Instead of adding to that pile, Steve Jones stands back and take a fresh look at that issue in a volume that is not an attack or a defence but which explores scriptural motifs--Creation, the Garden of Eden, original sin, the Exodus, virgin birth, the Resurrection, and the Last Judgment--using the methods and results of the latest scientific research. It is a remarkably quick jump, shows Professor Jones, from Adam to astrophysics. Although some of the questions raised are beyond the capabilities of science, at least a scientist can ask them in a new way. Steve Jones shows there is a better route to understanding the universe than through doctrine.

The Beginning of Things in Nature and in Grace by Joseph K. Wight Pdf

Excerpt from The Beginning of Things in Nature and in Grace: Or a Brief Commentary on Genesis It is evident that our interpretation of the Bible will depend very largely upon what we consider the Bible to be. If we look upon it simply as a human production among other human productions, - a system of religion among other systems, - then we shall expect mistakes, false standards, and false reasonings, as we do elsewhere. But if the Bible is exceptional - a revelation from God, and not merely the teachings of man, we shall expect to find it a transcript of his character - a pure, true, and safe guide in all that it professes to be. It is given to man as God's way of salvation from sin and death. In dealing with it, the question of authorship is our first question. The Word And Works Of God Equally From Him It is much the same with the word of God as with his works. Where did the heavens and the earth come from? Did God make them? or did solid ground come from nebulous matter and that we know not whence? If so, then we may believe in a chance law evolving an orderly cosmos out of chaos, in vegetable and animal, coming as the result of spontaneous generation, and man with his wonderful faculties and possibilities the descendant of Simian ancestors. This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1911 edition. Excerpt: ...scale in the geological history of the globe. We often think there is nothing so stable as the solid ground. But the most permanent and changeless thing in its past history has been the water. Dry land was first called out of the deep, and evidence is abundant everywhere of constant elevations and depressions. Coal beds were elevated and the rank vegetation grew luxuriantly, and then it Wm sealed up by depression and compression under water and often under stratified rock, and in many cases, elevated again and the process repeated. With regard to the depression accompanying the Noachian Deluge, which is indicated by "the fountains of the great deep being broken up," there are two questions (1) when did it occur? and (2) was it universal? There are some facts, however, which it is well to mention before deciding these questions very positively. First, Geologists agree that prior to the appearance of man, there was a disappearance of the large carniverou. animals. Mr. Alfred Wallace in his work on the "Distribution of Animals," speaks "of the recent and almost universal change that ha taken place in the character of the fauna on the entire globe" (Vol. 1, p. 149). Not only has this taken place with regard to cave-lions, bears, etc., but armadillos, large horses and tapirs. And in Australia kangaroos as large as an elephant are among the extinct fauna. With' reference to this sweeping away of so many large and fierce animals, he says it was an item of merry in the judgment of the flood, for it made the world a better habitation for man (Ib. Vol. 1, p. 100). The use of the word "flood," was doubtless an inadvertence by Mr. Wallace, for he thinks that this change in the fauna of the glolx: took...

Genesis 1 to 11 by John F. MacArthur Pdf

The first eleven chapters of the book of Genesis hold the keys to the beginning—but not so much as a history of the world or of the human race, but as a history of God's love, grace, and promise to his creations. In this study, pastor John MacArthur will guide you through an in-depth look at the creation story and some of our earliest interactions with each other and with our Creator. From the first murder to the first covenant, this study includes close-up examinations of Adam, Eve, Cain, Abel, and Noah, as well as careful considerations of doctrinal themes such as "The Fall of Man" and "Heritage and Family." It's from this point that you'll find your footing to understand the rest of the Bible more easily. So much happens in these first eleven chapters, they need their own study. —ABOUT THE SERIES— The MacArthur Bible Study series is designed to help you study the Word of God with guidance from widely respected pastor and author John MacArthur. Each guide provides intriguing examinations of the whole of Scripture by examining its parts and incorporates: Extensive, but straight-forward commentary on the text. Detailed observations on overriding themes, timelines, history, and context. Word and phrase studies to help you unlock the broader meaning and apply it to your life. Probing, interactive questions with plenty of space to write down your response and thoughts.

The Genesis of Technoscientific Revolutions by Venkatesh Narayanamurti,Jeffrey Y. Tsao Pdf

Research powers innovation and technoscientific advance, but it is due for a rethink, one consistent with its deeply holistic nature, requiring deeply human nurturing. Research is a deeply human endeavor that must be nurtured to achieve its full potential. As with tending a garden, care must be taken to organize, plant, feed, and weedÑand the manner in which this nurturing is done must be consistent with the nature of what is being nurtured. In The Genesis of Technoscientific Revolutions, Venkatesh Narayanamurti and Jeffrey Tsao propose a new and holistic system, a rethinking of the nature and nurturing of research. They share lessons from their vast research experience in the physical sciences and engineering, as well as from perspectives drawn from the history and philosophy of science and technology, research policy and management, and the evolutionary biological, complexity, physical, and economic sciences. Narayanamurti and Tsao argue that research is a recursive, reciprocal process at many levels: between science and technology; between questions and answer finding; and between the consolidation and challenging of conventional wisdom. These fundamental aspects of the nature of research should be reflected in how it is nurtured. To that end, Narayanamurti and Tsao propose aligning organization, funding, and governance with research; embracing a culture of holistic technoscientific exploration; and instructing people with care and accountability.

Excerpt from The Method of Creation: A Comparison of the Book of Nature With the Book of Genesis It is not intended to be a scientific manual, and does not presuppose a technical acquaintance with Geology as a science; but is an attempt to make certain great laws by which the work Of Creation has been carried on as intelligible to those who are not geologists as are the rudiments of Astronomy to those who are not astronomers. Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes by Denis Lamoureux Pdf

Christians throughout history have believed that God reveals himself both through Scripture and nature. The metaphor of God’s Two Books is often used to represent these two divine revelations. The Book of God’s Words is the Bible. Scripture reveals inerrant spiritual truths. These include, the God of Christianity is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, the creation is very good, and only humans are created in the Image of God (Gen. 1:1, 27, 31). The Book of God’s Works is the physical world. Nature declares God’s glory, eternal power, and divine nature (Ps. 19:1; Rom. 1:20). Through the gift of science, our Creator has blessed us with the ability to explore and understand the structure, operation, and origin of his creation. Together God’s Two Books offer us a complementary divine revelation of who created the world and how he created it. A majority of Americans view science and religion as being in conflict, according to the Pew Research Center. Christians and non-Christians alike share this view, yet if this perceived conflict misrepresents the relationship between modern science and Christian faith, then it is both unhelpful and unnecessary today. In Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes, theologian and scientist Denis O. Lamoureux reviews several options for embracing biblical Christianity and findings of science, including biological evolution. Holding to a high view of Scripture alongside an expert appreciation for scientific discovery, Lamoureux further outlines a way to understand passages referring to the natural world in the Bible and also demonstrates how modern science can point toward God. Lamoureux shares his own story along the way, recounting struggles many readers will relate to on his journey toward PhDs in both theology and biology and a fruitful relationship between the two. Topics in this book include: A biblical model of intelligent design in nature based on Psalm 19 and Romans 1. Examination of the ancient science in Scripture, such as a flat earth and 3-tier universe. Comparison of different Christian views on origins—young earth creation, progressive creation (old earth creation), and evolutionary creation. Criticisms of the atheistic interpretation of evolution held by Richard Dawkins and his belief that intelligent design is merely an illusion. Galileo’s peaceful relationship between Scripture and nature, including his view that “the intention of the Holy Spirit [in the Bible] is to teach us how one goes to heaven, and not how heaven goes.” Darwin’s religious beliefs and evidence of the impact that intelligent design had on him throughout his life, along with his claim, “It seems to me absurd to doubt that a man may be an ardent Theist [personal God] and an evolutionist.” Believers wanting to honor God’s Two Books—Scripture and Nature—faithfully and without conflict will find an excellent introduction in Evolution: Scripture and Nature Say Yes.
