Equine Genomics by Bhanu P. Chowdhary Pdf

Analysis of the equine genome began just over a decade ago, culminating in the recent complete sequencing of the horse genome. The availability of the equine whole genome sequence represents the successful completion of an important era of equine genome analysis, and the beginning of a new era where the sequence information will catalyze the development of new tools and resources that will permit study of a range of traits that are economically important and are significant to equine health and welfare. Equine Genomics provides a timely comprehensive overview of equine genomic research. Chapters detail key accomplishments and the current state of research, as well as looking forward to possible applications of genomic technologies to horse breeding, health, and welfare. Equine Genomics delivers a global overview of the topic and is seamlessly edited by a leading equine genomics researcher. Equine Genomics is an indispensible source of information for anyone with an interest in this increasingly important field of study, including equine genomic researchers, clinicians, animal science professionals and equine field veterinarians.

Horse Genetics by Ann T. Bowling Pdf

Textbooks of general genetics rarely mention horses. Horse breeders and those taking courses in equine studies do not find it easy to relate fruit flies, pea plants and mice to practical horse breeding. There is therefore a need for a book which provides an overview of genetic principles using horses as the primary examples. This book aims to fill this gap. The author, who has both practical and academic experience in this subject, has distilled facts and ideas to provide relevant examples in a jargon-free way, while still maintaining scientific rigor. Our knowledge of horse genes lags well behind that of other domestic animals, and the number of well-understood examples is limited. The author thus concentrates on topics such as coat color, where information is well documented, to illustrate general genetic principles. Nevertheless, the book is comprehensive in scope, covering additional topics such as parentage testing, medical genetics and gene mapping. Overall, the book is unique in providing an up-to-date review of current knowledge of horse genetics. It will be invaluable for students of equine studies, animal breeding and veterinary science, as well as for horse breeders, professionals and enthusiastic amateurs working with horses.

Animal Genomics by Bhanu P. Chowdhary Pdf

This publication provides an update on the current status of gene maps in different livestock and pet/companion animal species. The findings summarized in species specific commentaries and original articles testify the rapid advances made in the field of animal genomics. Of significant interest is the fact that current investigations are providing headways for two important and exciting research fronts: targeted high-resolution mapping leading to the application of genomic information in addressing questions of economic and biological significance in animals, and the initiation of whole genome sequencing projects for some of the animal species. Like in humans and mice, this will set the stage for a new level of research and real time complex analysis of the genomes of these species. Animal Genomics signifies the beginning of a new era in this field and celebrates the achievements of the past 20 years of genomics research. It will be of special interest to researchers involved in genome analysis - both gross chromosomal as well as molecular - in various animal species, and to comparative and evolutionary geneticists.

Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program by National Research Council,Division on Earth and Life Studies,Board on Agriculture and Natural Resources,Committee to Review the Bureau of Land Management Wild Horse and Burro Management Program Pdf

Using Science to Improve the BLM Wild Horse and Burro Program: A Way Forward reviews the science that underpins the Bureau of Land Management's oversight of free-ranging horses and burros on federal public lands in the western United States, concluding that constructive changes could be implemented. The Wild Horse and Burro Program has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate the population sizes of horses and burros, to model the effects of management actions on the animals, or to assess the availability and use of forage on rangelands. Evidence suggests that horse populations are growing by 15 to 20 percent each year, a level that is unsustainable for maintaining healthy horse populations as well as healthy ecosystems. Promising fertility-control methods are available to help limit this population growth, however. In addition, science-based methods exist for improving population estimates, predicting the effects of management practices in order to maintain genetically diverse, healthy populations, and estimating the productivity of rangelands. Greater transparency in how science-based methods are used to inform management decisions may help increase public confidence in the Wild Horse and Burro Program.

Performance diagnosis and purchase examination of elite sport horses by Arno Lindner Pdf

The focus of CESMAS 2010 in Sigtuna is 'Performance diagnosis and purchase examination of elite sport horses'. The multi authored articles deal with a range of complex topics. Performance evaluation, training guidance and management of race horses, sport horses and show jumpers before and after the competitive season is discussed over several chapters. This includes Body Condition scoring and on-track performance diagnosis. Particular attention is given to the optimal management of horses from birth to 2 years of age. Pre-purchase examination recommendations are made, specifically those done in the Netherlands and Germany, including that of the high level jumper. How genetics can help to find the ideal horse by noting positive and negative markers of performance and health is shown to be a valuable assessment tool in this process. Finally, topics such as variations among breeds in predisposition to injury, the role of shoes in horse performance, on track diagnosis of upper airways obstructions and equine osteochondrosis genetic markers are covered in the book. The book is a valuable resource to all who want to make informed decisions in the acquisition process of performance horses and manage them for sports.
