Geological Atlas of Africa by Thomas Schlüter Pdf

Here is the new edition of the first attempt to summarize the geology of Africa by presenting it in an atlas and to synthesize the stratigraphy, tectonics, economic geology, geohazards and geosites of each country and territory of the continent. Furthermore, the digitized geological maps are correlated and harmonized according to the current stratigraphic timetable. The atlas aims to contribute to capacity building in African Earth Sciences and to aid the initiation of research and enable the achievement of economic opportunities by providing a database of basic geological background information.

Africa’s Top Geological Sites by Richard Viljoen Pdf

Africa is home to more than the Cradle of Humankind. It was the core of the ancient supercontinent Pangaea, and comprises some of the oldest and most extraordinary geology on planet Earth. This detailed and colourful book features 44 of the continent's most spectacular and interesting 'geosites', from Table Mountain in the south to the eroded necks and plugs of the Hoggar region in Algeria; and from the volcanic islands of the Atlantic Ocean to the continental fragments off the African east coast. Each site is authored by a geologist (or specialist in a related field) with in-depth knowledge about the particular feature or landform: how it formed and developed, its current geological status, ecological impact, and its archaeological and cultural interest. Supported with many photographs, maps, satellite images and explanatory illustrations, the text is accessible to geologists and lay enthusiasts alike, unpacking the hows and whys of Africa's most intriguing landforms, sites and geological features.

Sequence Stratigraphy in Offshore South African Divergent Basins by Leonard Franklin Brown Pdf

The fundamental conceptual advancements in the field of sequence stratigraphy are now impacting most branches of academic and applied sedimentary geology, providing powerful tools for predicting the spatial location, lithogenesis, and stratigraphic succession of depositional systems. In 1987, Soekor Ltd. undertook ambitious regional seismic and sequence stratigraphy studies of three offshore South African basins in support of a major drilling program; the results of this five-year program are shared here--for explorationists who plan to prospect in South African basin, as well as those considering the validity of applying sequence stratigraphy concepts and methods in basins with different tectonic histories. Spiral bound, in a 24x11" horizontal format to accommodate the graphics. Price for AAPG members, $59. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The Boundaries of the West African Craton by Nasser Ennih,Jean-Paul Liégeois Pdf

The boundaries of rigid cratons can be affected by subsequent orogenic events, leading to 'metacratonic' characteristics not often properly recognized and still poorly understood. Major lithospheric thickening is absent and early events such as ophiolites are preserved; however, metacratonic boundaries are affected by major shear zones, abundant magmatism and mineralizations, and local high-pressure metamorphism. West Africa, marked by the large Eburnian (c. 2 Ga) West African craton, the absence of Mesoproterozoic events, the major Pan-African (0.9-0.55 Ga) mobile belts that generated the Peri-Gondawanan terranes, and the weaker but enlightening Variscan and Alpine orogenies, is an excellent place for tackling this promising concept of metacratonization. The papers in this book consider most of the West African craton boundaries, from the reworking of the Palaeoproterozoic terranes, through the Pan-African encircling terranes, the late Neoproterozoic-early Palaeozoic extension period and the Peri-Gondwanan terranes, the Variscan imprint to the current situation.
