This Memoir provides a comprehensive review of the Precambrian basins of the four Archaean nuclei of India (Dharwar, Bastar, Singhbhum and Aravalli-Bundelkhand), encompassing descriptions of the time-space distribution of sedimentary-volcanic successions, the interrelationship between tectonics and sedimentation, and basin histories. Studies of 22 basins within the framework of an international basin classification scheme deepen an understanding of the basin architecture especially for cratonic basins. Most Indian sedimentary successions formed as cratonic to extensional-margin rift and thermal-sag basins, some reflecting mantle plume movement, subcrustal heating or far-field stress. This Memoir shows that Phanerozoic plate-tectonic and sequence stratigraphic principles can be applied to the Precambrian basins of large Archaean provinces. The differences between the stratigraphic architecture of the Indian Precambrian and examples of Phanerozoic basin-fill successions elsewhere are ascribed to variable rates and intensities of the controls on accommodation and sediment supply, and changes inherent in the evolution of the hydrosphere-atmosphere and biosphere systems.

The Proterozoic aeon involved at least three major continental readjustments. India and Antarctica appear in most models of supercontinent reconstructions, but their relative position has been the subject of debate. High-resolution petrological and geochronological data, especially from the Proterozoic mobile belts, provide the principal means of resolving this issue. The ice-covered nature of Antarctica allows only limited access to the rocks, and then only in coastal tracts, so detailed studies in more accessible Proterozoic terrains in India assume added significance. This volume, a follow-up to the XII International Symposium on Antarctic Earth Science, Goa (a SCAR symposium), provides new data from selected locations in east Antarctica (Enderby Land and Dronning Maud Land) and from India, including the Eastern Ghats Mobile Belt (EGMB), Chota Nagpur Gneissic Complex, the Khasi Hills and the Aravalli–Delhi Mobile Belt. The presented geochronological data, constrained by petrological studies, are expected to provide new insights, especially into the EGMB–east Antarctica connection and the rate of continental readjustments in the post-Rodinia break-up.

Recent developments in Science and Technology have removed the boundaries betwe~n the so-called 'fundamental' and 'applied' fields of research. Fundamental geophysical studies of surface, subsurface and crustal structures where gravity investigations play an important role, are of immediate potential importance in defining major structural features or geological units which may control or influence the development of metallogenic provinces, petroleum potential areas or coal fields. Gravity studies in India have a long history and tradition. The earliest gravity measurements were made with two brass pendulums loaned by the Royal Society of England, when Basevi and Heaviside established 30 gravity pendulum stations between Cape Comorin and Ladakh during 1865 to 1873. Over the subsequent years, large areas of the country have been systematically covered through gravimeters and a number of regional and detailed studies have been undertaken by various agencies like Survey of India, Geological Survey of India (GSI), Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and a number of universities. Assistance was provided by late Prof. G. P. Woollard and his former students Muckenfuss, Bonini, Shankaranarayan and Murali Manghnani, who have connected India to the international gravity net work. Gravity studies carried out by the Survey of India have been of great value in geodetic studies.
