The Hazen Formation is an especially significant unit in northern Ellesmere Island and Greenland, as its depositional history spans the Cambrian to Silurian and underlies (and is exposed) throughout a substantial portion of the Arctic Islands. Four of its subdivisions can be mapped individually and correlated over at least 100 kilometres. This paper provides preliminary observations concerning the nature and correlation of the Hazen Formation with age-equivalent portions of the basinal succession in northern Greenland and the adjacent shelf succession of north-east Ellesmere Island. The paper describes the stratigraphy of the outer- shelf and basin-fill successions exposed on Judge Daly Promontory, the five mapped subdivisions of the Hazen Formation, and the age & correlations of the Formation.

A well-exposed section about 250 metres wide below the high water line of the Jennings River, Teslin Lake map area in northern British Columbia shows part of the Teslin Fault and provides an opportunity to constrain the fault's kinematic history by direct ground observations. This report describes preliminary structural observations of this section of the Teslin Fault, including the rock types involved, mylonitic & ultramylonitic structures, and deformation. Indications of two main episodes of shearing are discussed.

The final year of the Nechako NATMAP project to study the geology of central British Columbia was used to research information collected in the field & laboratory, and to compile & document the study results. This article includes a review of upcoming publications & other products, by type of product: maps, journal articles, conference presentations, and computer products, as well as ongoing research on petrology, palaeontology, terrane characterization, tectonics & structure, and Quaternary geology.

The use of static global positioning system (GPS) equipment for accurate horizontal & vertical positioning in field geology operations at high latitudes is made difficult by the need to set up & operate a GPS reference station and limitations on the distance between the reference station & field GPS due to errors introduced by the ionosphere. Dual-frequency GPS receivers have the potential to eliminate these problems since they can eliminate ionospheric errors and thereby increase baseline lengths, thus potentially permitting the use of existing GPS reference stations. This paper describes the use of a dual-frequency receiver for establishing benchmarks along the Yukon River as a field trial of this technology. Field methods and post-processing of the data using GPS data from permanent receiving stations are described, and baseline results are presented. The derived benchmarks will be applied to a survey of fill thickness below the Yukon River.

This study examines aspects of the geological evolution of the Sharbot Lake domain and compares it with that of neighbouring domains & terranes in the Central metasedimentary belt, Grenville Province, Ontario. The study reports uranium-lead zircon & titanite geochronological ages for a granodiorite phase of the Pakenham intrusion from the northern part of the Sharbot Lake domain. The new data expand the known range of magmatism in this part of the belt, elucidate the early tectonic evolution of the domain, and constrain the timing of overprinting metamorphism. Possible links between the Pakenham structure and the Wolf Grove structure to the south-east are also discussed.

Describes studies conducted as part of a program to provide baseline data of surficial materials, ice-flow history, and soil geochemistry in the Yellowknife area, aimed at augmenting the geoscience database to support mineral exploration & development. After description of the regional setting & bedrock geology of the area, information is presented on surficial sediments (till, glaciofluvial & glaciolacustrine sediments, peat), ice flow patterns, glacial history, and pebble lithology provenance.

Describes uranium-lead dating of zircon and titanite from two representative samples of two plutons (diorite and quartz monzonite) in the Tetachuck Lake map area of central interior British Columbia. Includes information on the geological nature & setting of the sampled plutons, analytical procedures, and geochronology. The correlation of the two plutons with the metallogenically important group of Late Cretaceous Bulkley plutonic suite is discussed.
