Geometric Properties of Banach Spaces and Nonlinear Iterations by Charles Chidume Pdf

The contents of this monograph fall within the general area of nonlinear functional analysis and applications. We focus on an important topic within this area: geometric properties of Banach spaces and nonlinear iterations, a topic of intensive research e?orts, especially within the past 30 years, or so. In this theory, some geometric properties of Banach spaces play a crucial role. In the ?rst part of the monograph, we expose these geometric properties most of which are well known. As is well known, among all in?nite dim- sional Banach spaces, Hilbert spaces have the nicest geometric properties. The availability of the inner product, the fact that the proximity map or nearest point map of a real Hilbert space H onto a closed convex subset K of H is Lipschitzian with constant 1, and the following two identities 2 2 2 ||x+y|| =||x|| +2 x,y +||y|| , (?) 2 2 2 2 ||?x+(1??)y|| = ?||x|| +(1??)||y|| ??(1??)||x?y|| , (??) which hold for all x,y? H, are some of the geometric properties that char- terize inner product spaces and also make certain problems posed in Hilbert spaces more manageable than those in general Banach spaces. However, as has been rightly observed by M. Hazewinkel, “... many, and probably most, mathematical objects and models do not naturally live in Hilbert spaces”. Consequently, toextendsomeoftheHilbertspacetechniquestomoregeneral Banach spaces, analogues of the identities (?) and (??) have to be developed.

Open Problems in the Geometry and Analysis of Banach Spaces by Antonio J. Guirao,Vicente Montesinos,Václav Zizler Pdf

This is an collection of some easily-formulated problems that remain open in the study of the geometry and analysis of Banach spaces. Assuming the reader has a working familiarity with the basic results of Banach space theory, the authors focus on concepts of basic linear geometry, convexity, approximation, optimization, differentiability, renormings, weak compact generating, Schauder bases and biorthogonal systems, fixed points, topology and nonlinear geometry. The main purpose of this work is to help in convincing young researchers in Functional Analysis that the theory of Banach spaces is a fertile field of research, full of interesting open problems. Inside the Banach space area, the text should help expose young researchers to the depth and breadth of the work that remains, and to provide the perspective necessary to choose a direction for further study. Some of the problems are longstanding open problems, some are recent, some are more important and some are only local problems. Some would require new ideas, some may be resolved with only a subtle combination of known facts. Regardless of their origin or longevity, each of these problems documents the need for further research in this area.

Geometric Nonlinear Functional Analysis by Yoav Benyamini,Joram Lindenstrauss Pdf

A systematic study of geometric nonlinear functional analysis. The main theme is the study of uniformly continuous and Lipschitz functions between Banach spaces. This study leads to the classification of Banach spaces and of their important subsets in the uniform and Lipschitz categories.

An Introduction to Nonlinear Analysis: Theory by Zdzislaw Denkowski,Stanislaw Migórski,Nikolaos S. Papageorgiou Pdf

An Introduction to Nonlinear Analysis: Theory is an overview of some basic, important aspects of Nonlinear Analysis, with an emphasis on those not included in the classical treatment of the field. Today Nonlinear Analysis is a very prolific part of modern mathematical analysis, with fascinating theory and many different applications ranging from mathematical physics and engineering to social sciences and economics. Topics covered in this book include the necessary background material from topology, measure theory and functional analysis (Banach space theory). The text also deals with multivalued analysis and basic features of nonsmooth analysis, providing a solid background for the more applications-oriented material of the book An Introduction to Nonlinear Analysis: Applications by the same authors. The book is self-contained and accessible to the newcomer, complete with numerous examples, exercises and solutions. It is a valuable tool, not only for specialists in the field interested in technical details, but also for scientists entering Nonlinear Analysis in search of promising directions for research.

Nonlinear Semigroups, Fixed Points, and Geometry of Domains in Banach Spaces by Simeon Reich,David Shoiykhet Pdf

Nonlinear semigroup theory is not only of intrinsic interest, but is also important in the study of evolution problems. In the last forty years, the generation theory of flows of holomorphic mappings has been of great interest in the theory of Markov stochastic branching processes, the theory of composition operators, control theory, and optimization. It transpires that the asymptotic behavior of solutions to evolution equations is applicable to the study of the geometry of certain domains in complex spaces. Readers are provided with a systematic overview of many results concerning both nonlinear semigroups in metric and Banach spaces and the fixed point theory of mappings, which are nonexpansive with respect to hyperbolic metrics (in particular, holomorphic self-mappings of domains in Banach spaces). The exposition is organized in a readable and intuitive manner, presenting basic functional and complex analysis as well as very recent developments. Contents: Mappings in Metric and Normed Spaces; Differentiable and Holomorphic Mappings in Banach Spaces; Hyperbolic Metrics on Domains in Complex Banach Spaces; Some Fixed Point Principles; The DenjoyOCoWolff Fixed Point Theory; Generation Theory for One-Parameter Semigroups; Flow-Invariance Conditions; Stationary Points of Continuous Semigroups; Asymptotic Behavior of Continuous Flows; Geometry of Domains in Banach Spaces."

Topological Nonlinear Analysis II by Michele Matzeu,Alfonso Vignoli Pdf

The main purpose of the present volume is to give a survey of some of the most significant achievements obtained by topological methods in nonlin ear analysis during the last three decades. It is intended, at least partly, as a continuation of Topological Nonlinear Analysis: Degree, Singularity and Varia tions, published in 1995. The survey articles presented are concerned with three main streams of research, that is topological degree, singularity theory and variational methods, They reflect the personal taste of the authors, all of them well known and distinguished specialists. A common feature of these articles is to start with a historical introduction and conclude with recent results, giving a dynamic picture of the state of the art on these topics. Let us mention the fact that most of the materials in this book were pre sented by the authors at the "Second Topological Analysis Workshop on Degree, Singularity and Variations: Developments of the Last 25 Years," held in June 1995 at Villa Tuscolana, Frascati, near Rome. Michele Matzeu Alfonso Vignoli Editors Topological Nonlinear Analysis II Degree, Singularity and Variations Classical Solutions for a Perturbed N-Body System Gianfausto Dell 'A ntonio O. Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications by Jesús Garcia-Falset,Khalid Latrach Pdf

Nonlinear functional analysis is a central subject of mathematics with applications in many areas of geometry, analysis, fl uid and elastic mechanics, physics, chemistry, biology, control theory, optimization, game theory, economics etc. This work is devoted, in a self-contained way, to several subjects of this topic such as theory of accretive operators in Banach spaces, theory of abstract Cauchy problem, metric and topological fixed point theory. Special emphasis is given to the study how these theories can be used to obtain existence and uniqueness of solutions for several types of evolution and stationary equations. In particular, equations arising in dynamical population and neutron transport equations are discussed.
