The Broken Road by Peggy Wallace Kennedy Pdf

From the daughter of one of America's most virulent segregationists, a memoir that reckons with her father George Wallace's legacy of hate--and illuminates her journey towards redemption. Peggy Wallace Kennedy has been widely hailed as the “symbol of racial reconciliation” (Washington Post). In the summer of 1963, though, she was just a young girl watching her father stand in a schoolhouse door as he tried to block two African-American students from entering the University of Alabama. This man, former governor of Alabama and presidential candidate George Wallace, was notorious for his hateful rhetoric and his political stunts. But he was also a larger-than-life father to young Peggy, who was taught to smile, sit straight, and not speak up as her father took to the political stage. At the end of his life, Wallace came to renounce his views, although he could never attempt to fully repair the damage he caused. But Peggy, after her own political awakening, dedicated her life to spreading the new Wallace message--one of peace and compassion. In this powerful new memoir, Peggy looks back on the politics of her youth and attempts to reconcile her adored father with the man who coined the phrase “Segregation now. Segregation tomorrow. Segregation forever.” Timely and timeless, The Broken Road speaks to change, atonement, activism, and racial reconciliation.

The Politics of Rage by Dan T. Carter Pdf

Combining biography with regional and national history, Dan T. Carter chronicles the dramatic rise and fall of George Wallace, a populist who abandoned his ideals to become a national symbol of racism, and later begged for forgiveness. In The Politics of Rage, Carter argues persuasively that the four-time Alabama governor and four-time presidential candidate helped to establish the conservative political movement that put Ronald Reagan in the White House in 1980 and gave Newt Gingrich and the Republicans control of Congress in 1994. In this second edition, Carter updates Wallace’s story with a look at the politician’s death and the nation’s reaction to it and gives a summary of his own sense of the legacy of “the most important loser in twentieth-century American politics.”

Wallace by Marshall Frady Pdf

“A sensitive, informed and funny feat of high journalism that is a classic of the kind.”—The New York Times Book Review Wallace is a classic portrait of one of the century’s most fiery and controversial political figures. Initially conceived as a novel, Marshall Frady’s biography of George Wallace retains the narrative force and descriptive powers of fiction. Elizabeth Hardwick noted on Wallace’s first publication in 1968, “There is a palpable Faulknerian mood to the reporting,” and The New Republic observed, “Frady has established new standards in political biography.” This is a wonderfully crafted depiction of a seminal figure whose influence altered the course of national politics.

Laff It Off by George Wallace,Dan Ewen,Jerry Seinfeld Pdf

"Some people say that the stress of the "real world" is what stops the laughter from coming. When you grow up there are bills to pay. You've got to work a nine-to-five. You've got relationship troubles. But come on people, you don't think a kid deals with stuff to? There's a bully on the playground, a math test the next day. Their teeth are falling out of their heads. Parents are yelling at 'em to eat their broccoli. Kids have their own problems, but they still find a way to laugh their pint-sized behinds off. So why can't the adults have some fun? Does it all have to be so darned serious? Why can't we find the laughter in our lives? I BELIEVE WE CAN"--P. [4] of cover.

George Wallace in Wisconsin by Ben Hubing Pdf

A revealing account of the tensions that embroiled Wisconsinites as Alabama Governor Wallace took his struggle north of the Mason-Dixon Line George Wallace ran for president four times between 1964 and 1976. In the Badger State, his campaigns fueled a debate over constitutional principles and values. Wallace weaponized states' rights, arguing that the federal government should stay out of school segregation, promote law and order, restrict forced busing, and reduce burdensome taxation. White working-class Wisconsinites armed themselves with Wallace's rhetoric, pushing back on changes that threatened the status quo. Civil rights activists and the Black community in Wisconsin armed themselves with a different constitutional principle, equal protection, to push for strong federal protection of their civil rights. This clash of ideals nearly became literal as protests and counter-protests erupted until gradually diminishing as Wallace's political fortunes waned. Historian Ben Hubing explores the tumult surrounding the so-called little man with the big mouth.

George C. Wallace and the Politics of Powerlessness by Jody Carlson Pdf

This is the only complete study of the Wallace phenomenon. It covers all of the presidential campaigns and views wallace from a variety of vantage ints: historical context, content analysis of speeches, and analysis of election data, including voting statistics and attitudinal patterns of supporters. Politics of Powerlessness examines nationwide support for George C. Wallace in the presidential campaigns of 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. A number of election and candidate preference surveys are used as sources of data on supporters. An understanding of Wallace's appeal is provided through an examination of themes noted throughout his speeches and an analysis of his political history from biographical sources, personal interviews, and newspaper accounts of the time. The picture of Wallace that emerges is one of a man who saw himself as a crusader for his supporters' interests, while deliberately heightening and intensifying their feelings of powerlessness as a means of getting votes. Carlson shows that Wallace voters were not marginal. They did not reflect a loss of status, nor were they simply outside the mainstream of political life. They were very much like major party voters, with the exception of their feelings of political powerlessness that me about by increased government ..rticipation in state politics. This work informed not only by a careful analysis, but by interviews with Wallace, many of his followers, and people active in his campaigns. The work has the additional advantage of having follow-up analyses and interviews as, late as 1978. In this sense, it represents not only a scholarly analysis of the Wallace phenomenon, but the most up-to-date analysis as well.

George Wallace by Lloyd Rohler Pdf

The story of George Wallace is the odyssey of a young war veteran who entered politics to support progressive policies, but instead descended into the politics of racism following the loss of his lifetime dream of being elected Governor of Alabama in 1958. His political career demonstrates the ability of a demagogue and agitator to exploit racial fears to achieve political power. This work traces the career of the man who symbolized Southern opposition to integration, but ironically ended up gaining overwhelming support from black voters in his final election campaign. He ultimately returned the favor by appointing a large number of blacks to state boards and commissions.
