Geotechnical Engineering for Ocean Waste Disposal by RC. Chaney,KR. Demars,HJ. Lee Pdf

As members of multidisciplinary teams, geotechnical engineers apply quantitative knowledge about the behavior of earth materials toward designing systems for disposing of wastes in the oceans and monitoring waste disposal sites. In dredge material disposal, geotechnical engineers assist in selecting disposal equipment, predict stable characteristics of dredge mounds, design mound caps, and predict erodibility of the material. In canister disposal, geotechnical engineers assist in specifying canister configurations, predict penetration depths into the seafloor, and predict and monitor canister performance following emplacement. With sewage outfalls, geotechnical engineers design foundation and anchor elements, estimate scour potential around the outfalls, and determine the stability of deposits made up of discharged material. With landfills, geotechnical engineers evaluate the stability and erodibility of margins and estimate settlement and cracking of the landfill mass. Geotechnical engineers also consider the influence that pollutants have on the engineering behavior of marine sediment and the extent to which changes in behavior affect the performance of structures founded on the sediment. In each of these roles, careful application of geotechnical engineering principles can contribute toward more efficient and environmentally safe waste disposal operations.

Ocean Disposal of Wastewater by Ian R. Wood,Robert G. Bell,D. L. Wilkinson Pdf

This book offers a comprehensive study on the subject of ocean disposal of treated and untreated sewage waste. The early chapters cover the philosophy of outfall design, properties of sewage from developed towns and an overview of water quality regulations in New Zealand, Great Britain and the U.S. Alternative ways of satisfying these regulations are discussed. The book also provides information required to design outfall pipelines and diffusers.

Handbook of Geophysical Exploration at Sea by Richard A. Geyer Pdf

This handbook presents advanced research and operational information about hard minerals and hydrocarbons. It provides information in an integrated, interdisciplinary manner, stressing case histories. It includes review chapters, illustrations, graphs, tables, and color satellite images that present the results of gravity, geodetic, and seismic surveys and of 3-D sea floor sub-bottom visualizations. The data was obtained using satellites, aircraft, and ships from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea.Major topics addressed in these volumes include geophysical methods used to explore for hydrocarbons, advanced radiometric and electrical methods for hard mineral searches, the role of geotechnology and seismic acoustics in overcoming geological hazards in selecting drilling sites and pipeline routes, and remote sensing techniques used to determine the physical properties of hydrocarbons.

The Ocean Dumping Quandary by Donald Fleming Squires Pdf

Dumping of sewage sludge, dredge spoils, and toxic wastes in the coastal waters of New York and New Jersey is an old practice. In the 1970s ocean dumping became an important environmental issue, the subject of legislation and litigation, and of scientific inquiry. After a decade of study and debate, the basic issues of the environmental effects of ocean dumping and its impact on the ocean and surrounding coastal region remain unresolved. This nontechnical review of ocean dumping issues looks at the development of the metropolitan coastal region from a societal view, particularly in how we have used the waters of the New York Bight. What is being dumped and the current state of our knowledge on the environmental effects of ocean dumping are closely examined, as well as legislative and legal issues surrounding contemporary court actions.

Wastewater Management for Coastal Cities by Charles G. Gunnerson,Jonathan A. French Pdf

Protection of coastal waters from direct pollution by coastal cities is a vital task in preserving marine ecosystems and promoting human health. This book, edited by two leading experts on wastewater management for coastal cities, delves deeply into the ecological and oceanographic fundamentals that are essential for understanding of what happens to wastes discharged into the nearshore marine environment. It explains the requirements for rational engineering design and operation of the physical and institutional components of coastal city wastewater management, and it provides guidelines for hydraulic design, ocean outfall construction, monitoring, cost recovery, and other economic aspects. Case studies are included, drawn from the editors' worldwide field experience.
