Ghana in Search of Development by Dan-Bright S. Dzorgbo Pdf

This title was first published in 2001. When Ghana became independent in 1957, becoming the first country in Sub-Saharan Africa to banish colonialism, there was a general optimism that irreversible socio-economic development was about to unfold. But by the end of the 1970s Ghana paradoxically became the first country in Twentieth Century Africa to have experienced socio-economic decline. What failed Ghana? This book seeks to answer this question. By combining sociological, economic, political and institutional perspectives, this book focuses on the interplay between state politics and socio-economic development. It provides a model, which suggests that Ghana’s postcolonial development has suffered mainly as a result of the failure or inability of governing elites to develop consensual politics and a clearly specified long-term development objective that could be widely understood, accepted and have relevance for policy making. This book presents a much-needed self-assessment of the post-colonial development experience which contends that governance, economic management and institution building are basic challenges without which the search for development is likely to falter.

Technology and Enterprise Development by Sanjaya Lall,Giorgio Barba Navaretti,Simon Teitel,Ganeshan Wignaraja Pdf

The process of capability development is central to industrialization, but the current literature focuses on the advanced developing countries. This book, based on a World Bank sponsored study of enterprise development in Ghana, is the first to examine in detail how firms in least developed countries in Africa acquire technological capabilities. It analyses why Ghanaian firms are generally relatively uncompetitive, why some firms are better than others, and how the structural adjustment is affecting manufacturing development.

The Economy of Ghana by Mozammel Huq,Michael Tribe Pdf

The book follows a first edition published in 1989, which focused on the severe economic crisis Ghana faced during the late 1970s and the early 1980s. In this second edition, the authors extend the review up to the mid-2010s, covering the entire period since independence, with a special focus on shifts in economic policy, starting with the adoption of the Economic Recovery Programme in 1983. Huq and Tribe provide systematic coverage of Ghanaian economic development since its independence, reviewing the two main modes of development that have been practiced; and offer an updated, rich data bank. By analyzing the wider macroeconomy of Ghana; its individual sectors; money, banking and trade; infrastructure and environmental policies; and Ghana’s poverty, welfare and income distribution, the authors are able to draw vital lessons from the country’s economic development.

The Economy of Ghana by Ernest Aryeetey,S. M. Ravi Kanbur Pdf

As Ghana enters its second half-century, there is a perception of the failure of the economic and political system. This book analyses the reasons for this failure and sets out an agenda as the basis of the course that the nations' policy makers have to steer if Ghana is to fulfil the promise of its independence in 1957.

Key Determinants of National Development by Kwaku Appiah-Adu,Mahamudu Bawumia Pdf

For those wishing to acquire knowledge on national development issues, this comprehensive compendium traverses a spectrum of subjects that the audience ought to be well acquainted with. The Editors provide instructive findings regarding national development, economic growth and their determinants, but they also offer historical perspectives on the subject and the implications for developing countries. The book addresses a suite of critical themes regarded by development experts to be germane in considering the pertinence of policies and their effective execution. These seven general thematic areas are explored: ¢ Leadership, governance, policy and strategy ¢ Public sector and public financial management ¢ Culture, institutions and people ¢ Natural resources ¢ Science, technology and infrastructure ¢ Private sector and financial markets ¢ Marketing, branding and service delivery This thematic approach enables the contributors to explore the impact of the constituents of each subject area on national development, within the context of a developing economy. The significance of the findings for the relevant stakeholders is consequently reviewed. The combination of theory and practice makes the book and its contents unique.

Globalization, Trade and Poverty in Ghana by Charles Ackah,Ernest Aryeetey Pdf

Citing a paucity of empirical evidence on the poverty and distributional impacts of trade policy reform in Ghana as the main motivation for this volume, the editors (both of the Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research at the U. of Ghana) present eleven papers that combine theory and econometric analysis in an effort to assess linkages between globalization, trade, and poverty (including gendered aspects). Specific topics examined include manufacturing employment and wage effects of trade liberalization; the influence of education on trade liberalization impacts on household welfare; trade liberalization and manufacturing firm productivity; the impact of elimination of trade taxes on poverty and income distribution; food prices, tax reforms, and consumer welfare under trade liberalization; impacts on tariff revenues; and impacts on cash cropping, gender, and household welfare; Distributed in the US by Stylus. Economic Development in Ghana and Malaysia by Samuel K. Andoh,Bernice J. deGannes Scott,Grace Ofori-Abebrese Pdf

Economic Development in Ghana and Malaysia investigates why two countries that appeared to be at more or less the same stage of economic development at one point in time have diverged so substantially. At the time of their independence from the UK in 1957, both Ghana and Malaysia were at roughly the same stage of economic development; in fact, Ghana’s real per capita income was slightly ahead of Malaysia’s. Since then, Ghana’s development has been sluggish, while Malaysia’s economy has taken off into sustained growth and today, the real per capita income of Malaysia is about five times that of Ghana. This volume examines the pre-colonial and colonial economies of both countries, and the economic policies pursued after independence. In doing so, it aims to identify policies which might have contributed to Malaysia’s development and those which might have slowed Ghana’s. The authors ask whether lessons can be learned from the successes of countries such as Malaysia. This detailed comparative analysis will be useful to students and researchers of development economics as well as public policy makers in developing countries. It is written in language which makes it accessible to the general reader.

Politics, Governance, and Development in Ghana by Joseph R.A. Ayee Pdf

Since it achieved independence in 1957, the West African state of Ghana has become the torchbearer of African liberation, as well as a laboratory for the study of endemic problems facing the African continent. In terms of democratic consolidation, the country holds a unique position on the continent as beacon of stability and democracy. Politics, Governance, and Development in Ghana takes critical stock of the landmark themes that have dominated its history since independence. The contributors address issues such as citizenship, civil society, the military, politicians, chiefs, transnational actors, the public sector and policies, the executive branch, decentralization, the economy, electoral politics, natural resources, and relations with Asia and the diaspora. These themes support “mobilizing for Ghana’s future,” which is the theme for the diamond jubilee celebration of Ghana’s independence. Edited by Joseph R.A. Ayee, this book will deepen the literature on studies on Ghana especially in the areas of politics, governance, economy and development; serve as a resource for academics, students, practitioners; and commemorate the diamond jubilee celebration of Ghana’s independence.

Understanding "development" Interventions in Northern Ghana by Karl Quaye Botchway Pdf

Dissatisfied with the persistence in understanding development as that which is self-evident and needed by all poor societies no matter their peculiar needs, circumstances, and history, Botchway (African American studies, City U. of New York-College of Technology) examines the latest attempt at engineering development in Ghana's Northern Region Rural Integrated Program. He investigates what such so-called development does in practice, by probing the constitution of its objects and subjects, their relationships, and their intended and unintended effects in explaining social change. The study is revised from his doctoral dissertation in political and social science at the New School for Social Research, New York; some of the chapters have been published as separate articles. The text is doubled spaced. Annotation :2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com).
