Gideon's Dawn by Michael Warden Pdf

A Parallel World, A Parallel Time...The light began to move toward Gideon. Racing, faster and faster, it silently brightened until it filled his whole world. As it neared, he leaned forward and looked into the light to see the power, the immeasurable power, coming to reside in him, coming to be his alone...But as the light came, it changed. What was a distant star took the shape of a flaming sword, emblazoned with pure fire that burned hotter than even the world could bear. And there was something else--Gideon could see more than just a sword. Someone was holding it. Someone more brilliant than the sun--and more terrible. Someone who was coming. For him... In the style of classic fantasy epics, Warden creates a mystical realm where an ordinary man must confront his fears to comprehend his extraordinary destiny.

Gideon's Promise by Jonathan Rapping Pdf

A criminal defense attorney “tugs at both the heartstrings and our consciences as he challenges America’s true commitment to justice” (Stacey Abrams), offering a blueprint for how public defense programs should work to end mass incarceration Combining wisdom drawn from over a dozen years as a public defender and cutting-edge research in the fields of organizational and cultural psychology, Jonathan Rapping proposes a radical cultural shift to a “fiercely client-based ethos” driven by values-based recruitment training, awakening defenders to their role in upholding an unjust status quo, and a renewed pride in the essential role of moral lawyering in a democratic society. Public defenders represent over 80% of those who interact with the court system, a disproportionate number of whom are poor, non-white citizens who rely on them to navigate the law on their behalf. More often than not, even the most well-meaning of those defenders are over-worked, under-funded, and incentivized to put the interests of judges and politicians above those of their clients in a culture that beats the passion out of talented, driven advocates, and has led to an embarrassingly low standard of justice for those who depend on the promises of Gideon v. Wainwright. Through the story of founding Gideon’s Promise and anecdotes of his time as a defender and teacher, Rapping reanimates the possibility of public defenders serving as a radical bulwark against government oppression and a megaphone to amplify the voices of those they serve.

Beyond Werewolves and Vampires, Darker Lore Lingers In ShadowGideon Wolf's world has turned not only upside down but inside out. Everything the world-renowned archaeologist thought he knew about history, about myth, about humanity's place in the universe has somersaulted from reality into a new world he can scarcely believe. In just a few days, the capricious hand of fate has flung Gideon from the status of celebrated scholar to wanted murderer. The US government, the Mexican cartels, even a shadowy team of assassins are hunting him. All because he discovered some ancient amulet in a hidden jungle temple. All because he killed the drug lord who murdered his wife to force him to look for it. All because that mysterious amulet now transforms Gideon into El Chupacabra-part man, part monster, part ancient guardian sent to protect humanity from the evil running the world. Gideon is as confused as anyone why he must carry this burden. But he clearly understands that if he doesn't fulfill his destiny, the dark, dangerous forces now arrayed against him won't stop until they've stolen his power, killed him and everyone he loves, and plunged humanity into a new Dark Age. USA Today best-selling author Ernest Dempsey blends his mastery of history, myth, and suspense to deliver the pounding second installment of the first great series of 2022. Righteous Dawn continues the saga of our antihero for the new age: Dr. Gideon Wolf, a man who resists the call of destiny until, at last, he has no other choice.

General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliography contains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Judges by David J. H. Beldman Pdf

Judges is a book for our time. It forces readers to come face to face with the way that faith speaks into the situations we encounter and read about in our newsfeeds. Warfare, authoritarianism, sexual exploitation, tribalism—these are a few of the repercussions from not having our social order oriented toward God. In this commentary David Beldman expounds the story of God and Israel that unfolds in the book of Judges, highlighting the vital message it speaks to contemporary Christians who strive to live lives of integrity and undivided loyalty to Jesus under the constant pressure of the idols of twenty-first-century culture.

Dawn by Elie Wiesel Pdf

Elie Wiesel's Dawn is an eloquent meditation on the compromises, justifications, and sacrifices that human beings make when they murder other human beings. "The author . . . has built knowledge into artistic fiction." —The New York Times Book Review Elisha is a young Jewish man, a Holocaust survivor, and an Israeli freedom fighter in British-controlled Palestine; John Dawson is the captured English officer he will murder at dawn in retribution for the British execution of a fellow freedom fighter. The night-long wait for morning and death provides Dawn, Elie Wiesel's ever more timely novel, with its harrowingly taut, hour-by-hour narrative. Caught between the manifold horrors of the past and the troubling dilemmas of the present, Elisha wrestles with guilt, ghosts, and ultimately God as he waits for the appointed hour and his act of assassination. The basis for the 2014 film of the same name, now available on streaming and home video.

The Revised New Jerusalem Bible by Anonim Pdf

A beautiful, fully updated edition of the popular and beloved New Jerusalem Bible, which has sold over half a million copies. The Revised New Jerusalem Bible presents anew the scholarship, character, and clarity of the 1966 Jerusalem Bible (the first modern English version) and the 1985 New Jerusalem Bible. It is a Bible that prioritizes: • a bold, rich language as suitable for reading out loud as for studying in silence, so that “the message might be fully proclaimed” (2 Timothy 4:17) • accurate translation of the original scriptures rather than the “dynamic equivalence” of some other modern versions • assurance that the message of the Bible is directed to men and women equally, despite the inbuilt bias of the English language This comprehensive Study Edition is the world’s first presentation of the full Revised New Jerusalem Bible, complete with study notes, cross-references, and book introductions. It has been prepared and edited for a modern readership by Dom Henry Wansbrough, OSB, who was general editor of the New Jerusalem Bible. Other features include: • The book of Psalms is based on the text of the 2010 translation of The Revised Grail Psalms. • Ancient systems of measure and time have been replaced by modern, metric equivalents. • A table of the notes provides explanations of the key words, themes, and ideas in the Bible’s major footnotes. • A chronological table, an index of persons, and eight pages of full-color maps provide historical context. For all who are discovering the mysteries contained in Scripture for the first time and for those coming to this holy book for regular inspiration, only a clear, understandable Bible translation will do. The Revised New Jerusalem Bible is the one Christians the world over can trust.

Chasing Gideon by Karen Houppert Pdf

The Washington Post reporter delivers a groundbreaking investigation into the nation’s crisis of indigent defense—“a hugely important book” (New York Law Journal). A Nieman Report’s Top Ten Investigative Journalism Books of 2013 First published to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Supreme Court decision Gideon v. Wainwright, which guaranteed all criminal defendants the right to legal counsel, Chasing Gideon offers a personal journey through our systemic failure to fulfill this basic constitutional right. Written in the tradition of Anthony Lewis’s landmark work Gideon’s Trumpet, it focuses on the stories of four defendants in four states—Washington, Florida, Louisiana, and Georgia—that are emblematic of nationwide problems. Revealing and disturbing, it is “a book of nightmares” because it shows that the “‘justice system’ that too often produces the exact opposite of what its name suggests, particularly for its most vulnerable constituents” (The Miami Herald). Following its publication, Chasing Gideon became an integral part of a growing national conversation about how to reform indigent defense in America and inspired an HBO documentary as well as the resource website GideonAt50.org. “Chasing Gideon is a wonderful book, its human stories gripping, its insight into how our law is made profound.” —Anthony Lewis, author of Gideon’s Trumpet

A People Heeds Not Scripture by Jillian L. Ross Pdf

“Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” This well-known indictment rumbles across the epilogue of Judges, denouncing God’s people as wayward. Yet understanding the source of Israel’s degenerative and downward spiral comes from an oft-overlooked declaration: Yahweh is testing Israel’s fidelity to the commandments he gave “by the hand of Moses.” By employing covert allusions rather than explicit quotations Judges contrasts the obvious sins of Israel with veiled reminders of the law that they have abandoned. In this volume, Jillian Ross employs current insights from literary theory, establishing a robust methodology for identifying allusions in the text. Once applied, the allusions to the Law, especially as presented in Deuteronomy, display three clear peaks: the prologue, Gideon narrative, and epilogue. The results suggest that Judges teaches a Deuteronomistic concept that the Israelites failed to obey the Torah, particularly its call for covenant fidelity in worship and warfare, as given to them “by the hand of Moses.”
