Gillian Mk2 by Gillian Firth Pdf

Suddenly, in 1994, the author stopped taking life for granted. When her existence filled with sunshine, parties and good times came to an end. A near fatal car crash left her comatose for six weeks; Gillian doesn’t know what happened on that night and ‘never will’. ‘Gillian Mk2’ chronicles her feisty determination to regain independence in a society where she was invisible. We follow her trek for the first four years. From hospitals, doctors, falls, nurses onto more hospitals, specialists, falls, attitudes, patients... Gillian Firth is lucky, clearly her family adore her, she lives to tell the tale and does so with blunt honesty. She knew nothing and only remembered she smoked because Pathetic bought her cigarettes, into the hospital ironically, her mum went mad. A Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is serious, life-changing, but you laugh out loud, then cry and laugh again, as we listen to Gillian speaking. Watch how she improves, cringe or agree with her observations, feel the anger and frustration, be embarrassed by comments and reactions. This author will be remembered for her flippant, but serious, heart rending yet hilarious, kick in the teeth, that’s what it is. Funny, factual and inspirational... my eyes are open.

Typically Gillian by Gillian Firth Pdf

The spark, from a damaged brain, ignited a passionate entry into a world of words, Gillian Firth's first novel 'Gillian Mk2' made impact. Nicky Rogers, editor 'Mobilise Magazine': 'book that moves you so much ... will be in your thoughts for the rest of your life'. Her first book is 'a triumph', the language is expressive and emotional, and it transcends normal boundaries, akin to a rollercoaster. One moment the reader laughs tears, she rolls a cigarette that 'looks like a Havana and a tampon crossed' in the hospital, it also resembles a joint. Then you cry in pain, the disbelief and the frustration, as the strong young woman becomes a victim of circumstances. But read on ... she will have a giggle around the corner. 'Typically Gillian', a continuation of this journey, requested by followers, she lives alone with help. Her disability is an issue but Gillian carries on, tackling routines of normality, the brave determination is inspirational, her parents and brother are irreplaceable, the harrowing but hilarious recounts of Gillian's exploits are memorable. Gillian brings reality to life and is adamant that she is 'not special', but she is and readers are right 'everyone' should read these books.

Hideo Kojima by Bryan Hikari Hartzheim Pdf

An exploration of the influential work of Hideo Kojima, creator of cinematic titles such as the blockbuster Metal Gear Solid franchise, which has moved over 50 million units globally, as well as Snatcher, Policenauts, and Death Stranding. As the architect of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, Kojima is synonymous with the “stealth game” genre, where tension and excitement is created from players avoiding enemies rather than confronting them. Through the franchise, Kojima also helped to bridge the gap between games and other forms of media, arguing that games could be deep experiences that unearthed complex emotions from players on the same level as films or novels. Drawing on archives of interviews in English and Japanese with Kojima and his team, as well as academic discourses of social/political games and cinematic narrative/world-building, this book examines Kojima's progressive game design as it applies to four key areas: socially-relevant narratives, cinematic aesthetics, thematically-connected systems, and reflexive spaces.

Gendering History on Screen by Julia Erhart Pdf

In movies about landmark historical events such as wars, occupations, or migrations or historically important personalities, there is an unspoken set of rules for how gender ought to be expressed. Often condemned by critics for being excessively emotional or pathetic, films by female directors featuring female protagonists may be popular with audiences but judged incapable of expressing 'real' history. Audiences learn more about the past from movies than from any other form of entertainment, and historical and heritage cinemas now comprise a burgeoning scholarly field. Yet to date there has not been a book-length analysis of female film directors' innovations in films about the historical past. With and without critical recognition, women are making important stories about the past and bringing new representations of agency and activism to the screen, often construed in ways that mobilise the past for the present, and always filtered through the lens of contemporary feminisms. Julia Erhart's new book situates women filmmakers' work within a context of other women directors from France, Denmark, Iran, Australia, the UK, the United States, and Spain and draws connections between their representational strategies and their concerns with visioning the past within the prism of the present. Written in an approachable yet theoretically informed prose, Erhart compellingly explores how foundational historiographic concepts like valour, memory, and resistance are re-envisioned within uniquely revised sub-genres that include biopics, historical documentaries, Holocaust movies, and films about the 'War on Terror'. Gendering History on Screen demonstrates how directors shape audiences' sense of the past, contour globally-relevant themes and narratives to suit female characters, and map a critique of national policies and institutions on to contemporary feminisms. Gendering History will be invaluable to students and scholars of historical film and women's cinema.

Film and Domestic Space by Stefano Baschiera Pdf

Drawing on a broad range of theoretical disciplines - and with case studies of directors such as Chantal Akerman, Agnès Varda, Claire Denis and Todd Haynes, Amos Gitai, Martin Ritt, John Ford, Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine - this book goes beyond the representational approach to the analysis of domestic space in cinema, in order to look at it as a dispositif.
