"[This book] comprises images sourced from the darkest recesses of the artist's extensive archive. The project continues Strand's decades-long engagement with the scrapbooks, magazines and photographs that she has drawn together since her mid-teens. In this iteration of Strand's ongoing research and reflection, women and girls are pictured holding, playing with and gazing fondly at snakes. Key to understanding the intention of the imagery is the inclusion of original accompanying text attached to the reverse, revealing stories of the bizarre and the erotic, alongside Myth and Credo."--Publisher's website.

So when she finally makes a friend, she's not about to bat an eye at her serpentine nature. The only problem is, being best friends with a snake girl isn't as simple as it might seem, especially in a world that hates non-humans. Will their friendship survive the trials that await them? And when the unthinkable happens, what will Alyssa do to protect her best friend? Prologue It was a monster from the worst of nightmares. A massive scaly tail whipped around behind it, smashing into one of the buildings and leveling it within a matter of seconds. Instantly, the monster was hidden again in a plume of dust. The man snapped us out of our shock, pushing on the guy's back behind me to move us forward. We both took off into a run, now being among the stragglers. Everyone else in the street had fled either down the road, or down an alleyway to escape the area. My classmate's mother had stopped to pick up a small boy who belonged to a young woman with a crying baby in her arms. The ground was trembling again, prompting me to look back with wide eyes, seeing the behemoth running down the street with bared fangs. The fine hairs stood up on the back of my neck as I considered its size to my own - I was like a small bird compared to a lion, literally being able to fit in its mouth with ease. It could swallow me whole without any effort. As it barreled towards us, unhindered despite the sides of its body smashing against the buildings, I realized there was no hope that any of us were going to survive. Not unless I did something. Magicbound to a Snake Girl is a full-length novel. Genre: Epic Fantasy / Fantasy & Magic
In her study of Chinese shadow theatre Fan Pen Li Chen documents and corrects misconceptions about this once-popular art form. Drawing on extensive research and fieldwork, she argues that these plays served a mainly religious function during the Qing dynasty and that the appeal of women warrior characters reflected the lower classes' high tolerance for the unorthodox and subversive. Chinese Shadow Theatre includes several rare transcriptions of oral performances, including a didactic play on the eighteen levels of Hell, and Investiture of the Gods, a sacred saga, and translations of three rare, hand-copied shadow plays featuring religious themes and women warrior characters. Chen examines the relationship between historical and fictional women warriors and those in military romances and shadow plays to demonstrate the significance of both printed works and oral transmission in the diffusion of popular culture. She also shows that traditional folk theatre is a subject for serious academic study by linking it to recent scholarship on drama, popular religion, and popular culture.
