The Working Class in Glasgow by R. A. Cage Pdf
Originally published in 1987, this book examines how much industrialisation improved the standard of living of the British worker, based on the experience of one representative city: Glasgow. It analyses whether there was an increase in skilled as opposed to unskilled labour in major industrial centres – as for example in Glasgow, manufacturing shifted from textiles to engineering. Other important issues such as the rate of housing construction, public health, local politics and leisure pursuits are also considered. Glasgow has a long history of working-class culture and is therefore a particularly interesting city to study.

Glasgow by Michael Pacione Pdf
First published in 1995, this book employs a historical-geographical approach to illuminate the interaction between the multifarious social and spatial forces which have conditioned the processes and patterns of urban growth and change over time in Scotland’s principle city. The book is organised into two complementary parts. In the first part, a chronological approach is adopted to examine the main agents, processes and patterns underlying the development of the city from its pre-urban origins until the close of the nineteenth century. In the second part, the major issues relating to the socio-spatial development of Glasgow in the twentieth century are the subject of systematic examination. The book uses the geographical approach to synthesise relevant information from a plethora of sources to illuminate the changing geography of the city in a multi-perspective format. This volume will assist those who are interested to understand the geography of Scotland’s principle city, and is an ideal book for students and researchers of urban studies, geography, social science and Scottish studies. It provides a fascinating insight into the structure of a vibrant, dynamic and often misunderstood city.

William Hunter and the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, 1807-2007 by Keppie Lawrence Keppie Pdf
This book describes the life and achievements of the eighteenth-century Scottish physician William Hunter and outlines the history of the Museum named after him. William Hunter built up a wide-ranging private collection at his home in London, encompassing not only anatomical and pathological specimens related to his medical work, but also books and manuscripts, coins and medals, natural history specimens and artworks. On his death in 1783 he bequeathed the collection to the University of Glasgow where he had long ago been a student, and money to construct a Museum which opened in 1807. The book utilises a wide range of source material, much of it previously unpublished, to tell the story of the Museum's development, the many subsequent additions to its holdings and, more recently, the construction of a new Hunterian Art Gallery which houses not only Hunter's own collection but also numerous works be James McNeill Whistler and Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Museum is celebrating its bicentenary in 2007.There is a foreward contributed by Sir Kenneth Calman, Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, and formerly Government Chief Medical Officer and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Durham
