Diplomat Among Warriors by Robert Murphy Pdf
“[E]ver until the end — he retired in 1959 — a ‘diplomat among warriors’... this was Bob Murphy’s very special role. I doubt if any other diplomat has ever had an equivalent one. A normal Ambassador is assigned to prevent war or make peace. Much of his diplomacy was the diplomacy of war itself. He was a devoted, first-class public servant, a worthy companion to the great soldiers he accompanied. His memoirs, which include a great deal of fascinating, new historical material, should be widely read.” — C.L. Sulzberger, The New York Times “This important diplomatic memoir provides a wealth of rewarding insights and information about recent events in American foreign relations... Murphy’s lucid and well-written volume will be of great aid to the scholar and of absorbing interest to the general reader.” — Daniel M. Smith, The Journal of Modern History “[Robert Murphy’s] autobiography is more than a personal memoir; it is, in fact, a vivid history of our Foreign Service from an understaffed and inefficient bureau to ‘the finest diplomatic instrument in the world’... It is an important book, consistently readable, and thoroughly deserving to be every bit as long as it is.” — Kirkus “Diplomat Among Warriors gives a substantial account of the author’s participation in the execution of American foreign policy over a period of four eventful decades, 1917-1958... The narrative is interesting, sometimes exciting, and it contains many insights, much soul-searching, and even a few revelations, particularly for the period after 1940. The incisive characterization of actions, actors, and the author’s experiences is more dramatic and revealing than a systematic history could be... Murphy is an unassuming man. But modesty cannot disguise the key role he played in some dramatic events of contemporary history. Diplomat Among Warriors is a warm human story, written with great charm, compassion, and lucidity. It is a useful source for historians and the narrative is fascinating to the general reader.” — Stephen D. Kertesz, The Review of Politics

Roosevelt and Hopkins by Robert Emmet Sherwood Pdf
Originally published in 1948, this book offers a rare insight into the workings of FDR’s wartime diplomacy. It is a classic account of FDR’s foreign policy during World War II and examines how Harry Hopkins, his friend and confidant, became the president’s “point man” with Stalin, Churchill, de Gaulle, and other allied leaders. The inside history of America’s inevitable wartime rise as a great power, written in a wonderfully readable prose by White House speechwriter and prize-winning playwright Robert Sherwood, this biography won the 1949 Pulitzer Prize and a 1949 Bancroft Prize. Richly illustrated throughout.

The Mediterranean and Middle East: The early successes against Italy (to May 1941) by Ian Stanley Ord Playfair Pdf
The first of eight volumes in the 18-volume official British History of the Second World War covering the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern theatres. After setting the political and military scene, the authors open the action with Italy s declaration of war and France s collapse in June 1940. Britain s painful neutralisation of the French fleet at Oran and Alexandria is followed by the first blows against the Italian empire in East Africa, and Italy s attacks on Egypt and Greece. The Fleet Air Arm s triumphant attack on the Italian Fleet at Taranto, masterminded by Admiral Cunningham, is trumped by General Wavell s even more successful Battle of Sidi Barrani in December, when vast numbers of Italians were captured for negligible British losses. The victory was followed up by Britain s capture of Bardia and Tobruk, and the founding of the Long Range Desert Group - the germ of the SAS. The mopping-up of Genertal Graziani s forces in Cyrenaica, however, ominiously resulted in Germany s decision to rescue their ally with General Rommel s Afrika Korps. However, the volume concludes optimistically with the successful campaign against Italy in Ethiopia, in which General Orde Wingate s irregular Gideon Force plays a prominent part. The military narrative is accompanied by descriptions of diplomatic developments and technological innovations such as the arrival of the Hurricane fighter plane, the Matilda tank and radar. The text is accompanied by ten appendices, 30 maps and diagrams and 43 photographs.

The newest volumes in this distinguished series cover Eisenhower's first term as President of the United States, from January 1953 to January 1956. Meticulously edited and carefully annotated, these memorandums, diary entries, and personal and official letters shed new light on some of the most important topics in recent American history. Eisenhower won the presidency decisively after offering the American people an alternative to the New Deal and Fair Deal policies that had dominated public life for twenty years. He ended the unpopular Korean War and dealt effectively with crises in Guatemala and Iran. Problems in Egypt, Southeast Asia, and the Formosa Straits, however, proved intractable. Meanwhile, Eisenhower wrestled with the demands of GOP leadership. His political coalition, built at the center, felt constant pressure from the Republican right, particularly from Ohio senator John Bricker, who opposed international commitments that might circumscribe U.S. sovereignty, and Wisconsin senator Joseph McCarthy, who claimed to find Communist conspiracies in the highest reaches of government In 1955, despite his having suffered a heart attack, the president reluctantly decided to seek another term, hoping thereby to secure his domestic successes and carry forward his work toward a stable, peaceful world order. Although diplomatic troubles in the Middle East and an anti-communist outbreak in Hungary kept him from much personal campaigning in the summer and fall of 1956, he won an impressive mandate in November and began preparing for a second term. The Presidency: The Middle Way makes a new contribution to our understanding of the Eisenhower administration and Ike's role in creating the modern presidency. Taken together, the documents portray Eisenhower as a forceful leader who faced truly vexing domestic and cold war problems and handled them with great skill and a fundamental sense of decency.
