The Life of a Regimental Officer During the Great War, 1793-1815 by A. F. Mockler-Ferryman Pdf

This book is a biography of a man named Samuel Rice, who served as a colonel in World War I, fighting on behalf of the British Empire. The author describes Rice as a dedicated officer who devoted his entire career to the 51st Regiment. He joined the regiment first as an ensign and served with them until 1831, holding the position of commander for the last 14 years. He embodies a type of soldier who was not uncommon in the early 19th century and who lived for their regiment, placing their duty and the reputation of their regiment above all else. They were not concerned with personal recognition or glory, and were content to work diligently behind the scenes to maintain the high standards of their beloved regiment.

The Government of Victorian London, 1855-1889 by David Edward Owen Pdf

Of all the major cities of Britain, London, the world metropolis, was the last to acquire a modern municipal government. Its antiquated administrative system led to repeated crises as the population doubled within a few decades and reached more than two million in the 1840s. Essential services such as sanitation, water supply, street paving and lighting, relief of the poor, and maintenance of the peace were managed by the vestries of ninety-odd parishes or precincts plus divers ad hoc authorities or commissions. In 1855, with the establishment of the Metropolitan Board of Works, the groundwork began to be laid for a rational municipal government. Owen tells in absorbing detail the story of the operations of the Metropolitan Board of Works, its political and other problems, and its limited but significant accomplishments--including the laying down of 83 miles of sewers and the building of the Thames Embankments--before it was replaced in 1889 by the London County Council. His account, based on extensive archival research, is balanced, judicious, lucid, often witty and always urbane.

Victorian writers and the city by Université de Lille III.

Conceiving the City by Nicholas Freeman Pdf

'Conceiving the City' looks at how major writers and artists represented London in fiction, poetry, essays, and art. It shows that late-Victorian fin-de-siècle London emerged as a focus for dynamic, explicitly modern art as writers and artists broke with earlier tradition and bent realism into exciting new shapes.

Print Culture and the Blackwood Tradition by David Finkelstein Pdf

In late 1804, William Blackwood established a small publishing and bookselling firm in Edinburgh. Over the next 175 years, William Blackwood & Sons became one of the leading publishers in Britain, enjoying both local and international success. Early on it championed the works of Scottish writers, and later gained acclaim as the publisher of G.W. Steevens, George Eliot, Charles Whibley, and Joseph Conrad. Its political influence was also widespread; in 1817 it founded the monthly Blackwood's Magazine, which featured literary, critical, political, and journalistic commentary and analysis, and was a powerful force in British conservative politics. Two hundred years after the founding of this significant influence on British literary, political, and social history, this collection of essays reappraises the place of the Blackwood firm and its magazine in literary and print culture history. Editor David Finkelstein brings together an array of eminent scholars and critics from the US, Canada, Scandinavia, and the UK to examine Blackwoods from a variety of interdisciplinary perspectives. The resulting collection covers an impressive range of subject areas, including Romantic and Victorian literature, print culture, media history, and New Journalism.
