Global Rinderpest Action Plan by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations,OIE Pdf

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) declared in 2011 the global eradication of rinderpest and resolved to implement follow-up measures to maintain world freedom from the disease. Rinderpest is the only animal disease that has been globally eradicated. The greatest risk for rinderpest (RP) re-emergence is the release, whether intentional or unintentional, of infectious material from a Rinderpest Holding Facility (RHF) among susceptible animal populations. The re-emergence of disease would be a global animal health emergency, leading to the loss of global disease freedom and threatening livelihoods, food security, international trade and national economies. The Global Rinderpest Action Plan (GRAP) aims to ensure continued global freedom from rinderpest by outlining the actions necessary to prepare for, respond to and recover from a RP outbreak.

Global Rinderpest Action Plan by Myers, L.,Metwally, S.,Marrana, M.,Stoffel, C.,Ismayilova, G.,Brand, T. Pdf

Discover the Global Rinderpest Action Plan (GRAP), an international strategy designed to prevent the re-emergence of rinderpest, safeguarding global livestock and ecosystems. [Author] Rinderpest is the only animal disease that has been globally eradicated. [Author] The greatest risk for rinderpest re-emergence is the release, whether intentional or unintentional, of infectious material from a Rinderpest Holding Facility (RHF) among susceptible animal populations. [Author] The re-emergence of disease would be a global animal health emergency, leading to the loss of global disease freedom and threatening livelihoods, food security, international trade and national economies. [Author] The GRAP is an international operational plan that addresses activities related to the potential re-emergence of rinderpest. [Author] The GRAP applies an emergency management cycle approach to prepare for, prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from a potential re-emergence of rinderpest, and it addresses responsibility for each stage of the cycle at the national, regional/continental, and international levels. [Author] By identifying gaps in preparedness and prioritizing risk mitigation measures, the GRAP enhances global readiness for potential rinderpest re-emergence. [Author] It builds confidence among decision-makers to eliminate remaining virus stocks and strengthens coordination across national, regional, and international levels. [Author] The GRAP's scope encompasses a wide array of stakeholders, including government officials, academics, livestock keepers, and international organizations. [Author] It aims to facilitate coordinated responses to rinderpest outbreaks and assesses readiness levels to address gaps in preparedness. [Author] The plan operates under the assumption that rinderpest virus material remains a risk and underscores the importance of swift eradication in the event of confirmed cases to maintain global rinderpest freedom. World Livestock 2013 by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Pdf

The World Livestock 2013: Changing disease landscapes looks at the evidence of changing disease dynamics involving livestock and explores three key areas: the Pressure, including drivers and risk factors that contribute to disease emergence, spread and persistence; the State, describing the disease dynamics that result from the Pressure and their subsequent impact; and the Response, required both to adapt and improve the State and to mitigate the Pressure. The report argues that a comprehensive approach for the promotion of global health is needed to face the complexities of the changing disease landscapes, giving greater emphasis on agro-ecological resilience, protection of biodiversity and efficient use of natural resources to ensure safer food supply chains, particularly in areas worst afflicted by poverty and animal diseases. Speeding up response times by early detection and reaction – including improved policies that address disease drivers – is key. Forging a safer, healthier world requires engagement in the One Health approach, which involves all relevant actors and disciplines spanning animal, human and environmental health sectors.

The initial chapters discuss the concept and principal functions of Veterinary Public Health. The book further covers the impacts of Veterinary Public Health on human Health particularly in management of zoonoses. The following section discusses theapplication of epidemiology in the study of outbreaks, epidemic, pandemics and their prevention and control strategies. It helps understanding the factors associated with disease causation transmission and spread and also investigate the emergence of antimicrobial resistance. The chapter on foodborne illnesses illustrates how the knowledge of epidemiology is applied in the study of diseases in community, spread of causative agents from farm to fork. The definition, cause, symptoms, management, control and prevention of foodborne infection and intoxication are dealt with. The last chapter introduces the concept, objectives, and definition of One Health and discusses the advancements made and challenges in One Health around endemic and emerging zoonotic diseases.

Infectious Disease Movement in a Borderless World by Institute of Medicine,Board on Global Health,Forum on Microbial Threats Pdf

Modern transportation allows people, animals, and plants-and the pathogens they carry-to travel more easily than ever before. The ease and speed of travel, tourism, and international trade connect once-remote areas with one another, eliminating many of the geographic and cultural barriers that once limited the spread of disease. Because of our global interconnectedness through transportation, tourism and trade, infectious diseases emerge more frequently; spread greater distances; pass more easily between humans and animals; and evolve into new and more virulent strains. The IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted the workshop "Globalization, Movement of Pathogens (and Their Hosts) and the Revised International Health Regulations" December 16-17, 2008 in order to explore issues related to infectious disease spread in a "borderless" world. Participants discussed the global emergence, establishment, and surveillance of infectious diseases; the complex relationship between travel, trade, tourism, and the spread of infectious diseases; national and international policies for mitigating disease movement locally and globally; and obstacles and opportunities for detecting and containing these potentially wide-reaching and devastating diseases. This document summarizes the workshop.

Considerations for Viral Disease Eradication by Institute of Medicine,Board on Global Health,Forum on Emerging Infections Pdf

Since smallpox eradication, the science of eradication has changed and with it, our definitions of what diseases are possible to eradicate. However, eradication must not beget complacency. As has been learned from past control or eradication attempts with a variety of viral diseases, from yellow fever to influenza, accidental or intentional reintroduction is a real threat-one that could strike anywhere and for which we need to be fully prepared. The criteria for assessing eradicability of polio, measles, and other viral infections have been debated extensively. With the elimination and eradication of several viral diseases on the horizon, issues surrounding the cessation of immunization activities become exceedingly important. In an effort to better understand the dynamics of disease eradication and post-immunization policies, the Institute of Medicine Forum on Emerging Infections hosted a two-day workshop (February 1-2, 2001) on The Consequences of Viral Disease Eradication. This book explores the principles underlying the biological challenges, medical interventions, the continuing research agenda, and operational considerations for post-immunization strategies for vaccine-preventable viral diseases, and highlights important efforts that may facilitate wise decision making.

Rinderpest and Peste des Petits Ruminants tells the story of how, by the year 2010, scientists are set to globally eradicate one of the great historic plagues that has ravaged human livestock for centuries. Descriptions of the disease in Europe date back to the 4th century and it was regularly re-introduced following wars and other civil unrest until late in the 19th century. It was introduced with devastating effect into Africa towards the end of the 19th century and is now widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and Southern Asia. Its causative agent, rinderpest virus, a morbillivirus very closely related to human measles virus, decimates the cattle population along with those of other susceptible domestic ruminants and many wildlife species wherever it is present.
