A wide-ranging anthology of essays that examine the uses, purposes and influence of religious language. It is said that words are like people: One can encounter them daily yet never come to know their true selves. This volume examines what words are—how they exist—in religious phenomena. Going beyond the common idea that language merely describes states of mind, beliefs, and intentions, the book looks at words in their performative and material specificity. The contributions in this volume examine and employ a number of linguistic and semiotic ideologies. They develop the insight that our implicit assumptions about language guide the way we understand and experience religious phenomena. They also explore the possibility that insights about the particular status of religious utterances may in turn influence the way we think about words in our language.

Why and under what circumstances did the religion of Islam emerge in a remote part of Arabia at the beginning of the seventh century? Traditional scholarship maintains that Islam developed in opposition to the idolatrous and polytheistic religion of the Arabs of Mecca and the surrounding regions. In this study of pre-Islamic Arabian religion, G. R. Hawting adopts a comparative religious perspective to suggest an alternative view. By examining the various bodies of evidence which survive from this period, the Koran and the vast resources of the Islamic tradition, the author argues that in fact Islam arose out of conflict with other monotheists whose beliefs and practices were judged to fall short of true monotheism and were, in consequence, attacked polemically as idolatry. The author is adept at unravelling the complexities of the source material, and students and scholars will find his argument both engaging and persuasive.

The Square Route of Tomorrow is about how a small group of intelligent people can change the world for better or worse. Jon and Roy were brilliant, hardworking young men with a strong commitment to making the world better for everyone. Their inventions made them rich and famous. One of their inventions was the Zoomer which traveled as a lightning bolt and could circle the earth in minutes as it carried its cargo of people and things to their destination. They made the Zoomer available to everyone on Earth making it possible to live in one part of the world, work in another part, thousands of miles away, do a little shopping at the end of the day, and still be home for supper. Mims and Ro were also brilliant and inventive, but they were very self-centered in their goals and creations. The purpose for their talent was not help the poor, or ordinary people who were sick or injured. Both Mims and Ro were very wealthy and had little or no concern for things like helping the poor, or sick, or anyone in need if they were ordinary people. Their specialty was to help the talented, the smart, and especially the rich. The ordinary was for the ordinary, and certainly not clients that Mims served. Their favorite clients were the rich who never complained as longue as the service was excellent, and the patient was cured, and returned to good health. Yes, Mims loved money and Ro loved cloths and both loved surgery in their own way. Square Root to Tomorrow is designed for anyone from middle school to adult.
