Industrial Competitiveness and Design Evolution by Takahiro Fujimoto,Fumihiko Ikuine Pdf

This book integrates the concept of design into the existing framework of industrial performance, international trade and comparative advantage in trade and industrial phenomena, which increasingly have been affected by design characteristics of tradable goods. Design, capability and their evolution are introduced into current theories of trade to explain the reality of international trade in the early twenty-first century and the possibility of design-based comparative advantage is explored. Toward that end, the concepts of design, architecture, organizational capability and productivity are introduced, as are their interactions and evolution. The author starts from the fact that firms’ selection of design locations precedes that of production locations and that a new product’s initial production location is usually the same as its design location. In other words, design matters in explaining today’s trade phenomena. Thus, this book analyzes product design and its evolution in the context of the comparative advantage theory. The author argues that the concept of Ricardo’s comparative advantage must be reinterpreted in a more dynamic way than in the past, with changing labor input coefficients treated as variables and driven by international capability-building competition between factories. Some of the many topics dealt with in this volume include a capability-architecture view of industrial comparative advantage, a design-based view of manufacturing, the evolution of manufacturing capabilities, Ricardian comparative advantage with changing labor input coefficients, comparative design cost and selection of design locations and a design process model behind comparative design cost. In this way, the behaviors of factories, product development projects, firms, industries and national economies in today’s global competition are described and analyzed in the most realistic way.

Practices and Perspectives of Teaching and Teacher Education in Africa by Boadu, Gideon,Odhiambo, George,Marandi, Pegah Pdf

Teacher education is a known variable that impacts the quality of teaching and schooling, yet while research on practices in teaching and teacher education abound in other contexts, there seems to be no comprehensive reference work on teaching and teacher education in Africa. With Africa and the diaspora boasting rich, diverse political and educational contexts and practices, this gap in knowledge requires that attention be focused on investigating issues that shape the pace, course, and direction of teaching and teacher education in these contexts. Practices and Perspectives of Teaching and Teacher Education in Africa facilitates scholarly discussions among scholars and practitioners about practices, innovations, and future possibilities for educating the next generation of competent students and teachers in Africa. Covering topics such as educational reforms, equity, career progression, and curriculum development, this major reference work is ideal for administrators, industry professionals, researchers, academicians, scholars, practitioners, instructors, and students.

Globalizing the Research Imagination by Jane Kenway,Johannah Fahey Pdf

In the provocative opening essay Kenway and Fahey explore ways in which the notion of the imagination itself might be mobilized by researchers. They are encouraged to develop 'defiant' global imaginations and communities with the capacities to think, 'be' and 'become' differently in a world of research increasingly governed by rampant reductionist rationality. To support this view there follows a series of detailed interviews with some of the world's leading intellectuals where the editors explore what it might mean to globalize the research imagination. The interviewees, Arjun Appadurai, Raewyn Connell, Doreen Massey, Aihwa Ong, Fazal Rizvi and Saskia Sassen, are foremost in their research fields and their views related here are both influential and inspirational. This thought-provoking book for students and researchers identifies and critically interrogates the various ways in which globalization reshapes research investigates the challenges that globalization poses for the social sciences and humanities creates an understanding of how globalization is transforming the practice of research and doctoral research training Progressive researchers in the social sciences and humanities urgently need to decide for themselves how best to globalize research methodologies and communities, and this book will be an invaluable resource for them.
