Going Straight by Paul Karsten Fauteck Pdf

A roadmap from the gutters of society to respectability and success. For those seeking a straight life, it describes what they must change about themselves, and the hazards they must avoid. For anyone interested in crime, punishment, and rehabilitation, it provides an unprecedented look into the minds of offenders. Bluntly acknowledges the existence of unfairness and hypocrisy in society, but not with bitterness or self-pity. Rather it puts these in perspective and shows how the individual offender CAN change and build a respectable life, in spite of the barriers and pitfalls. The author has seen criminal justice and corrections all the way from the cold floor of a solitary cell to the courtroom as an expert witness. Without mincing words and with a touch of humor, he turns this experience to the service of both the offender and society as a whole. (Personal note: Today is November 28, 2010, so GOING STRAIGHT... has been available for almost ten years. I've received numerous letters and emails from readers, telling how they've used it to help themselves and others. Not a single one has told me that he or she considered it a waste of time and money. Whatever your own situation, whether you're in a cell sweating out a parole hearing, or a corrections officer, or teacher, or you care for someone trapped in a criminal lifestyle, or an activist pushing for more rehabilitation-oriented corrections, or interested for any other reason, I sincerely hope you also find this book helpful. My main interest is not the royalties -- they just help offset SOME of the cost of my websites and other rehabilitation efforts. My goal is to know, when it's my time to leave this world, that there are a few people whose lives are better because I was here. PKF)

Picture Interpretation: A Symbolic Approach by Zhi-qiang Liu,Sandy Dance Pdf

Traditional methods for image scene interpretation and understanding are based mainly on such single-threaded procedural paradigms as hypothesize-and-test or syntactic parsing. As a result, these systems are unable to carry out tasks that require concurrent hypothesis testing. This book explores a method for symbolically interpreting images based upon a parallel implementation of a network-of-frames suggested, for example, by Minsky (1975), to describe intelligent processing. The system has been implemented in an object-oriented environment in the logic programming language Parlog++ and includes the propagation of uncertainty through each frame using Baldwin's (1986) formulation. The system is tested with several scenarios of increasing complexity, culminating with legal interpretation of traffic intersection images.

Morals and Consent by Robert Malcolm Murray Pdf

How are we meant to behave? And how are we to defend whatever answer we give? Morals and Consent grounds our notion of morality in natural evolution, and from that basis, Malcolm Murray shows why contractarianism is a far more viable moral theory than is widely believed. The scope of Morals and Consent has two main parts: theory and application. In his discussion of theory, Murray defends contractarianism by appealing to evolutionary game theory and metaethical analyses. His main argument is that we are not going to find morality as an objective fact in the world, and that instead, we can understand morality as a reciprocal cooperative trait. From this minimal moral architecture, Murray derives his innovative consent principle. The application of the theory, detailing what contractarians can - or ought to - say about moral matters, takes up the greater portion of the work. Murray offers a trenchant examination of what moral constraints we can claim concerning death (abortion, euthanasia, and capital punishment), sex (pornography, prostitution, and sexual assault), beneficence (toward present and future people, animals, and the environment), and liberty (genetic enhancement, organ sales, and torture). By focusing on evolutionary contractarianism and the epistemic justification of our moral claims - or lack thereof - Malcolm Murray's Morals and Consent is a serious advance in the field of applied ethics and fills an important void.

This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart by Madhur Anand Pdf

WINNER OF THE 2020 GOVERNOR GENERAL'S LITERARY AWARD FOR NONFICTION “Wondrously and elegantly written in language that astonishes and moves the reader…This is an important book: an emotional and intellectual tour de force.” —Jane Urquhart An experimental memoir about Partition, immigration, and generational storytelling, This Red Line Goes Straight to Your Heart weaves together the poetry of memory with the science of embodied trauma, using the imagined voices of the past and the vital authority of the present. We begin with a man off balance: one in one thousand, the only child in town whose polio leads to partial paralysis. We meet his future wife, chanting Hai Rams for Gandhiji and choosing education over marriage. On one side of the line that divides this book, we follow them as their homeland splits in two and they are drawn together, moving to Canada and raising their children in mining towns and in crowded city apartments. And when we turn the book over, we find the daughter's tale—we see how the rupture of Partition, the asymmetry of a father's leg, the virus of a mother's rage, makes its way to the next generation. Told through the lenses of biology, physics, history and poetry, this is a memoir that defies form and convention to immerse the reader in the feeling of what remains when we've heard as much of the truth as our families will allow, and we're left to search for ourselves among the pieces they've carried with them.

AI 2003: Advances in Artificial Intelligence by Tamas D. Gedeon,Lance C.C. Fung Pdf

Consider the problem of a robot (algorithm, learning mechanism) moving along the real line attempting to locate a particular point ? . To assist the me- anism, we assume that it can communicate with an Environment (“Oracle”) which guides it with information regarding the direction in which it should go. If the Environment is deterministic the problem is the “Deterministic Point - cation Problem” which has been studied rather thoroughly [1]. In its pioneering version [1] the problem was presented in the setting that the Environment could charge the robot a cost which was proportional to the distance it was from the point sought for. The question of having multiple communicating robots locate a point on the line has also been studied [1, 2]. In the stochastic version of this problem, we consider the scenario when the learning mechanism attempts to locate a point in an interval with stochastic (i. e. , possibly erroneous) instead of deterministic responses from the environment. Thus when it should really be moving to the “right” it may be advised to move to the “left” and vice versa. Apart from the problem being of importance in its own right, the stoch- tic pointlocationproblemalsohas potentialapplications insolvingoptimization problems. Inmanyoptimizationsolutions–forexampleinimageprocessing,p- tern recognition and neural computing [5, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19], the algorithm worksits wayfromits currentsolutionto the optimalsolutionbasedoninfor- tion that it currentlyhas. A crucialquestionis oneof determining the parameter whichtheoptimizationalgorithmshoulduse.
