John in the Company of Poets by Thomas Gardner Pdf

Thomas Gardner artistically describes Jesus--"the Word made flesh"--as a poem penned by God for the world, and John--author of the Fourth Gospel--as the poem's interpreter. John's structural patterns, repetitions, and narrative interventions invite readers to experience for themselves the beauty of the divine poem. John in the Company of Poets deepens this invitation by re-imagining the biblical text through the eyes of such artists as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Wendell Berry, and T. S. Eliot, offering a literary reading of the Gospel based upon their powerful poetic replies. Poets are our best readers, contends Gardner, and his deft analysis forges a fresh path into the issues and tensions of John's Gospel.

Gospel Poetics by Frederick Preston Annie Pdf

This book of poetry is an opportunity to search for meaning in the Gospel of St. Matthew and a way to explore your soul. St. Mathew’s Gospel is a rich and fertile field producing abundant insights into life and the human condition. These poems cultivate this wisdom and translate it into poetry, amplifying its meaning and adding contemporary context and color. Once engaged in the poetic, the reader is offered additional insights generated by their own excited imagination. To aid the imagination, I have added an original abstract painting to each poem to enhance the experience. This experience of the Holy can be a path into the soul. Deep at the bottom of each of us is that spark of eternity that can only be ignited by the gift of faith. It is my hope that these poems will encourage the reader to examine that divine mystery that is planted deep within us by the very Word of God.

Poetics for the Gospels? by Petri Merenlahti Pdf

Poetics, the study of the making of literary works, regards the gospels as literature, in contrast to the historical-critical approach. Petri Merenlahti makes the case that poetics offers a vital critical tool to interpreting the gospels. But he argues that poetics must also be 'historical', as perceptions of literary form and value are not fixed, but evolve and develop from one time and culture to another. Merenlahti provides a comprehensive account of the development and the state of the art of poetics and narrative criticsm. Through scrupulous methodological discussion and detailed analysis of gospel narratives, he also offers a potentially highly productive future programme for historical poetics in gospel studies.

Poetic Theology by William A. Dyrness Pdf

What are the poetics of everyday life ? What can they teach us about God? Art, music, dance, and writing can certainly be poetic, but so can such diverse pastimes as fishing, skiing, or attending sports events. Any and all activities that satisfy our fundamental need for play, for celebration, and for ritual, says William Dyrness, are inherently poetic and in Poetic Theology he demonstrates that all such activities are places where God is active in the world. All of humanity s creative efforts, Dyrness points out, testify to our intrinsic longing for joy and delight and our deep desire to connect with others, with the created order, and especially with the Creator. This desire is rooted in the presence and calling of God in and through the good creation. With extensive reflection on aesthetics in spirituality, worship, and community development, Dyrness s Poetic Theology will be useful for all who seek fresh and powerful new ways to communicate the gospel in contemporary society. William Dyrness s bold invitation to a poetic theology shaped by Scripture, tradition, and imagination one luring us toward a fuller participation in beauty than argument or concept alone allow reminds us that truth itself is beautiful to behold and poetic to the core. . . . If poetry is in its deepest reflex an intensification of life, then Dyrness s call for a poetic theology is one we ignore at our peril, reminding us that faithful living is not only about proper thinking but also and, perhaps, more properly about the texture of our living and the quality of our loving. Mark S. Burrows Andover Newton Theological School Makes a strong case for aesthetics as one of the avenues used by God to draw human beings near to him and his glory. . . . A wonderful journey through Reformed spirituality and a wake-up call for Reformed theology. Cornelius van der Kooi Free University, Amsterdam

Poetics for the Gospels? by Petri Merenlahti Pdf

Poetics is the study of the making of literary works of art. In gospel studies, in contrast to the dominant historical-critical paradigm, poetics regard the gospels as literature. This approach is associated with a particular methodological movement: narrative criticism. Petri Merenlahti argues that poetics offer a vital critical tool to interpreters of the gospels. But the approach must necessarily be historical, recognising that perceptions of literary form and value are not fixed, but evolve and develop from one time and culture to another. Far from being neutral, these perceptions are integrally connected with ways of perceiving reality that reflect particular interests in human societies. Through methodological discussion and detailed analyses of gospel narratives, this book introduces a comprehensive programme of historical poetics for gospel studies.

Experiencing Irony in the First Gospel by Karl McDaniel Pdf

The Gospel of Matthew is both deliberately deceptive and emotionally compelling.Karl McDaniel explores ways in which the narrative of the Gospel of Matthew elicits and develops the emotions ofsuspense, surprise, and curiosity within its readers. While Matthew 1:21 invites readers to expect Jewish salvation, progressive failure of the plot's main characters to meet Jesus' salvation requirements creates increasing suspense for the reader. How will Jesus save 'his people'? The commission to the Gentiles at the Gospel's conclusion provokes reader surprise, and the resulting curiosity calls readers back to the narrative's beginning.Upon rereading with a retrospective view, readers discover that the Gentile mission was actually foreshadowed throughout the narrative, even from its beginning, and they are invited to partake in Jesus' final commission.

The Gospel: According to Poetry by T. Cole Jenkins Pdf

What inspires us? What is the source of our joy, peace, wisdom and happiness? No matter who we are, where we are from, our religious beliefs, or how we identify ourselves, there is one thing that unites us: our belief and relationship in a Higher Power. What we call this power is as varied as we are. Whether it is God, Jehovah, Allah, Yahweh and the like, it is our need for a spiritual foundation that connects us. Like a finely woven thread in an elaborate tapestry, we are united purely on that basis, creating a beautiful image of a kind of solidarity, if we take the time to recognize it. In this intimate collection of poems, you will see this in action, as poets from all walks of life, hailing from both the near and the far, have allowed us to peek inside the deepest parts of themselves. With beautiful prose and rhyme, you will enjoy both the diversity of expression, and the connection of our love of the Divine that sustains us all.

First-Century Gospel Storytellers and Audiences by Thomas E. Boomershine Pdf

These essays explore the reconception of the Gospels as first-century compositions of sound performed for audiences by storytellers rather than the anachronistic picture of a series of texts read by individual readers. The new paradigm implicit in these initial experiments is based on the recent realization that the majority of persons--85 to 95 percent--were illiterate and experienced the Jesus stories as members of audiences. Either from memory or from memorized manuscripts, the evangelists performed the Gospels as an evening's entertainment of two to four hours. The audiences were predominantly addressed as Hellenistic Judeans who lived in the aftermath of the Roman-Jewish war. When heard whole, the Gospels were vivid experiences of the central character of Jesus. These studies of audience address and the interactions between first-century storytellers and audiences reveal a dynamic performance literature that functioned as scripts for an ever-expanding network of storytelling proclamations whose envisioned horizon was the whole world. When the Gospels were told at one time from beginning to end, they invited the listeners to move from being peripherally interested or initially opposed to Jesus to identifying themselves as disciples of Jesus and believers in him as the Messiah.

Introduction to the Literary Art of the Gospel of John by Paul Jaesuk Jo Pdf

The Gospel of John is a magnificent book. Intricate fabrics interweave its beautiful robe and its material is a finely twisted linen of many colors. Throughout the history of the church, interpreters have long been captivated by its loveliness and power. Many modern interpreters, however, would not hesitate to call it puzzling, confusing, or ridden with riddles at least. "What is John?" is therefore a fascinating question that lingers. During the last half century, literary theories have been brought into the study of the Fourth Gospel with varying degrees of success. New analytical lenses are cast over the Gospel to render its secrets, but it feels as if only those who are initiated into its mystery have the knowledge. Reading and rereading strategies are offered, but the path out of the vast labyrinth is difficult to find. The Gospel of John, however, surprisingly reads much like the Old Testament. In fact, its form is deeply imbued in the styles of Old Testament poetry, narratives, and prophets, that when they are properly understood together, John's message comes across clearly. Taking a comprehensive view of the styles of the Old Testament, this book takes you to see John in its grand design.
