Gospel Worship, or, The Right Manner of Sanctifying the name of God in General, in Hearing the Word, Receiving the Lord’s Supper, and Prayer by Jeremiah Burroughs,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

Worship is not a trite act. It is the life of the Christian. When the Christian hears God in his word, or from the mouth of the biblical minister, and is pressed to obey him in all things as exemplified in his word, such obedience is for his very life. “For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life,” (Deut. 32:47). In this obedience, God has not left his ordinances of worship to the inventions of men. God has set down certain specific requirements which are to be followed. It was a hallmark of the Reformation that God alone determines the manner in which sinners approach him. God’s will, in this way, has reference to the regulative principle of life as well as to the Laws which God has made known and prescribed to man in order that his walk might be regulated accordingly. So, God regulates his worship with the intention of allowing fallen, sinful people to come before him and sanctify his name in a manner that God requires: in holiness. This is the substance of Burroughs’ treatise Gospel Worship. Worship is for God, not for us. Sadly, that simple statement is foreign to our day. Yet God is as clear today as He was to Nadab and Abihu in the Old Testament: He will be treated as holy by those who come into His presence (Lev. 10:1-3). In this treasured work, Jeremiah Burroughs masterfully provides guidelines to facilitate the reader to move closer to God in worship. Through 14 sermons, Burroughs carefully explains the right manner of worshipping God in general, and the three great ordinances of hearing the Word, receiving the Lord’s Supper, and prayer. Burroughs demonstrates that true worship is reverent, focused on the holiness of God. How to Hear the Preaching of God’s Word with Profit by Stephen Egerton,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

In this treatise, Egerton demonstrates the Christian’s duty in hearing the word of God preached. In the first chapter he shows what it means to “take heed” in hearing the word following what Christ said, “Take heed therefore how ye hear,” (Luke 8:18). Then, he gives general duties in chapter 2 in relationship to preparations that ought to be made before coming to hear the sermon. Chapter 3 deals with what the hearer ought to do while hearing the sermon. And chapter 4 deals with the duties of the Christian after the sermon. Egerton takes a simplistic and manageable approach to teaching Christians what is required by Christ in hearing the Word of God preached. He is quite comprehensive to remind the believer of the most important aspects of the truth in his doctrine as it relates to the preached word. Egerton has a vivid, masterful grasp of his matter, and dissects the doctrine of hearing the word preached in a catechistic manner through questions and thorough answers. Since God is speaking to the Christian in the preached word by all true ministers, that the minister’s mouth is God’s mouth in the act of preaching, one would do quite well to heed Rev. Egerton’s application of Christ’s exhortations to hear what God is saying to us rightly, biblically, and for the good of our souls. God has spoken to his people, his word is contained in holy Scripture, and in speaking to them, he requires that they know what his word says. Knowing the content of the Bible, means knowing God and his Son Jesus Christ. Christ himself is the Living Word. He is the Logos which declares and communicates the Father to his church (John 1:18). This work is a compilation of faithful teachings on both reading and studying the word of God, as well as hearing the word of God preached. Three of the works contained in this volume have not been published since the day they were originally printed for the public: those by Richard Greenham, Daniel Burgess and John Philips. Gospel-Fear or the Heart Trembling at the Word of God by Jeremiah Burroughs,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

The fear of God is a primary spiritual grace deposited in the redeemed and pardoned soul. Scripture is filled with directives in obedience before God based on godly fear because it is a principal grace; it is part of the beginning of grace. Why are not more Christian books taken up with the fear of the Lord? It is because at the outset, such seems to be very offensive to modern Christian sensibilities. And yet, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding,” (Prov. 9:10). Many Christians look to Christ like they look to a boyfriend or girlfriend, rather than as the holy God who deals with sin through infinite wrath on the cross. Christ directed his disciples to a holy fear of God (Matt. 10:28). Jesus is the loving Savior, but this is bound up in the astonishment and amazement and respect of God’s being and character in relation to sin and salvation. He is to be feared. What is godly fear? Jeremiah Burroughs will answer this more than adequately. He uses his primary text in Isaiah 66:2, “But to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.” Knowledge of the word of God produces and cultivates the fear of God in Spirit-endowed believers. It produces a trembling and contrite Christian. As a result, he will show that Scripture informs the pardoned soul to understand God in the light of holy fear and trembling, in turn that becoming a tender heart to follow the word and will of God, as he demonstrates further from 2 Kings 22:14, “Because thine heart was tender….” Holy dread and tenderness of heart are inseparably linked together as Gospel-Fear.

The Glorious Name of God the Lord of Hosts by Jeremiah Burroughs,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646), was a brilliant Reformed preacher of the Gospel, and an astute theologian. He ministered with pastoral sensitivity and a zealous desire to glorify God in his preaching and writing. This amazing study by Jeremiah Burroughs is set on Isaiah 47:4, “THE LORD OF HOSTS is his Name.” It was initially preached as a result of the impending civil war in England, but has much to teach Christians concerning God as a God of war, and the church as the church militant. His purpose is to point Christians to this, “name of God,” and to sanctify this name in our hearts, in such times of reformation when there is much opposition to reforming the church and living a godly life. He shows that God is a God of War, that he orders war in his providence, that he will use it for his glory and that it will show forth his name as glorious. In a spiritual manner, and a practical one, Burroughs also demonstrates that God raises up all his children to be soldiers under Christ’s military discipline. Such warriors under Christ look to be humble and contrite in spirit, will not be a slave to the devil, or any of his own lusts or the lusts of other men. Such a resoluteness of spirit manifests itself in dangerous times, in a readiness to join with the brethren of the church in difficult services, in which there is much trouble while they live in this world. They have a spirit which is befitting this great Captain, and aims at pleasing God in all their works. One might think, initially, “Why study the God of war?” Since God is the LORD OF HOSTS, which is no small theme throughout the Bible, and is the very substance of triumph and victory in the covenant of God, through Christ, in the power of the Spirit, then such thoughts should raise our minds to give glory to the LORD OF HOSTS, the God of war, as the majestic warrior King. Attending the Lord's Table by Henry Tozer,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

When Christians participate in the Lord’s Supper, which is no ordinary supper, they are partaking of the means of grace. When they take of the bread, they ought to remember and believe that the body of the Lord Jesus Christ was given for a complete remission of all their sins. When they take of the cup, they are to remember and believe that the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ was shed for a complete remission of all their sins. And then, they must never believe that they have done their duty when they have merely received the Lord’s Supper. It would signify but little, if after preparing for the supper, examining themselves in light of the supper, receiving the supper, and going their way after the supper, that they do not cast away all sin. To cast off sin, is both a preparative for the Lord’s Supper, and must be its consequence, as Tozer faithfully shows. Tozer guides the reader in understanding the meaning of the supper as a sacrament, how to prepare for the supper, what examination looks like in light of the supper, what to examine before taking the supper (our knowledge, repentance, faith, and love), what to consider about Christ during the supper, and how to practice and live before the face of Christ after we have partaken of the supper. The subject of this work is not a matter of human learning, but of God’s service. Though grace once conferred cannot be lost, yet our assurance often lacks strengthening by reason of our manifold temptations. Against these we are comforted by the remembrance of Christ’s death and passion. His supper teaches us that we stand daily in need of food and strengthening, and so we often receive the supper of the Lord, that our souls may be nourished to life everlasting.

The Excellent Name of God by Jeremiah Burroughs,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

Burroughs’ text in this work is Psalm 148:13, focusing on the phrase, “For his name alone is excellent.” His main argument is to demonstrate God’s glorious character, that the psalmist does not rest in simply praising God for his glory that appears in the creatures, but he rises higher to praise and bless God for what there is in himself above that which appears in any creature. Burroughs sets his point of view directly in line with the glorious nature of God himself, and the excellent name of God above all things. It is true that God manifests himself in heaven and earth as glorious, but, there is a further glory of God that is within himself, beyond all that is, or can be manifested in or to any creature. This is the substance of this ensuing work. Burroughs covers two main doctrines: that a gracious heart is not satisfied with praising God only for his works but rises higher to praise him for himself. And, God is a most excellent being above all things. In these two doctrines he lays out the biblical arguments that press Christians to give glory to God’s inherent excellency. Certainly, God is to be praised for all his works, (for creation, providence and redemption in Jesus Christ), but God is to be praised especially for who he is in and of himself in his glorious nature.

A Heavenly Directory by Ryan M. McGraw Pdf

There is a growing body of historical literature on the importance of John Owen. Ryan M. McGraw seeks to reassess Owen's theology in light of the way in which he connected his trinitarian piety to his views of public worship. McGraw argues that Owen ́s teaching on communion with God as triune was the foundation of his views of public worship and that he regarded public worship as the highest expression of communion with the triune God. These themes not only highlight Owen's context as a Reformed orthodox theologian, but the distinctive influence of English Puritanism on his theological emphases. The connection between his practical trinitarianism and public worship runs through the course of his writings and every major area of his theology. These include the nature of theology, the knowledge of God, the doctrine of the Trinity, public worship, spiritual affections, apostasy, covenant theology, ecclesiology, and Christology. This work treats these themes in Owen's thought and shows how they intersect and are intertwined with the Trinity and public worship. In addition, this book provides a detailed exposition of the parts of Reformed worship. While other works have treated the centrality of his trinitarianism in his theology, few have acknowledged the importance of public worship in his thinking. This research concludes that communion with God in public worship was integral to Owen's practical trinitarian theology.

God's Arrow Against Atheists by Henry Smith Pdf

In this book Smith argues that Christianity is the only true religion. This particular book was one of Smith’s most popular works, and went through dozens of editions and reprints during his lifetime (his sermons in general had gone through eighty–five editions by 1620). "God’s Arrow" focuses on utterly destroying paganism (the atheism of the natural man), Islam (the religion of carnality) and Roman Catholicism (the religion of the deceived, apostate and Antichristian establishment posing as God’s authority in the world), with an exhortation to unite Christ’s church in the truth rather than divide it. Smith’s arguments are lucid and biblically powerful, and a sanctifying treat to the Christian’s mind and soul. He quickly demonstrates the absurdity of that which is “not the true religion” of Jesus Christ and concretely sets down the right religion contained in Holy Scripture. This is a classic work that should not be missed! This is not a scan or facsimile, and contains an active table of contents for electronic versions.

The Delay of Reformation Provokes God’s Indignation by James Nalston,Richard Greenham,C. Matthew McMahon Pdf

Nalton takes his text from Jer. 13:27, “I have seen your adulteries and your neighings, the lewdness of your whoredom, and your abominations on the hills in the fields: Woe unto you, O Jerusalem, will you not be made clean? When shall it once be?” This exhortation was written and preached to urge and promote the work of reformation for those who profess to be covenanters and need God’s help in making the work of Christ in biblical reform a reality. He covers three important doctrines: Doctrine 1: God pays precise and special attention to all the sins and abominations of a people in covenant with Him. Doctrine 2: These sins and abominations provoke Him to express His anger in terrifying threats. Doctrine 3: Those terrifying threats pronounced against a people call for immediate repentance and reformation. After covering these main parts to the treatise, he asks, but how, or by what means may the work of reformation be carried on, both in public and private, in Church and State, in our hearts and houses? He answers this with various motives and helps in the means which God has blessed his people. To be humbled for previous failures, to reflect on our vows to God, to be more involved in reformation in our church and family, to focus on unity for the cause of God and the Gospel, and to cultivate a heart ignited with a burning love for Christ and a passionate zeal for His honor and the advancement of the work of Reformation. Annexed to this work is a sermon by Richard Greenham (1531-1594) called Sweet Comfort for an Afflicted Conscience on Proverbs 18:14.

The Difficulties of and the Encouragements to a Reformation by Anthony Burgess Pdf

How hard is it to Reform people? This is obviously the work of God. But how hard is it to take the people of God toward biblical Reformation? The answer is that there are many difficulties to hurdle, but there are encouragements to doing this for the glory of God. Burgess, a master exegete, teaches from Mark 1:2-3, “As it is written in the Prophets, Behold I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make thy paths straight.” He answers questions like, Are we reformed enough? Is God content for us to be sanctified just enough? What can church members and pastors do to promote true biblical reform in their congregations? This second edition is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.
