Governance for a Higgledy-Piggledy Planet by Ralph C. Bryant Pdf

" The world's governing structures are higgledy-piggledy: disorderly, heads and tails in any or every direction. Such disorder fosters deficient governance. Decisions by noncooperating nations can generate damaging crossborder outcomes. Muddles destabilize mutual well-being. Public debate is often mired in superficial arguments about “globalization.” This insightful book by economist Ralph C. Bryant instead emphasizes that the world's nations need to craft better middle-ground compromises to improve governance and manage increasing integration. Individual nations, Bryant argues, should fashion a balance between local autonomy and external openness, avoiding the extremes of rigid localism and unfettered openness. And nations need to act together collectively. Cooperative governance can encourage orderliness that mitigates disarray undermining mutual goals. The global challenge of the coronavirus pandemic is a vivid reminderthat international cooperation is becoming progressively more essential. Do nations and their leaders have sufficient foresight to use borders not as barriers but as catalysts for international cooperation? Could national migration policies find sustainable middle ground between the unrealistic extreme of unfettered freedom for people to cross borders and the inhumane exclusion of foreign refugees? Could augmented cross-border cooperation mitigate dangers from recurring financial instability? Could the world community foster collective actions to reduce the severe risks of global climate change? The answer to such questions can and should be yes. Wiser cross-border collective action nurtures a mutually supportive order offsetting the threats of disorder that may otherwise prevail. A healthy evolution of our planet requires—requires!—more orderly national governance and more ambitious cross-border cooperation. "

The Economy of Ireland by Anonim Pdf

The Economy of Ireland (14th edition) takes a holistic examination of the Irish Economy in light of events including the Celtic Tiger boom, recession, recovery and a global pandemic. The textbook considers the evolution of the Irish economy over time; the policy priorities for a small regional economy in the eurozone; the role of the state in policy making; taxation and regulatory policy; and the challenge of sustainable development. This provides a framework for analysing policy issues at a national level, including the Irish labour market and migration, inequality and poverty, and the care economy. Understanding the Politics of Pandemic Emergencies in the time of COVID-19 by Mika Aaltola Pdf

This book reviews the political significance of COVID-19 in the context of earlier pandemic encounters and scares to understand the ways in which it challenges the existing individual health, domestic order, international health governance actors, and, more fundamentally, the circulation-based modus operandi of the present world order. It argues that contagious diseases should be regarded as complex open-ended phenomena with various features and are not reducible merely to biology and epidemiology. They are, as such, fundamentally politosomatic, namely that they disrupt, agitate, and trigger large-scale processes because individual somatic-level anxieties stem from individuals’ sensing immediate danger through the networks of their local and global connectedness. The author further argues that pandemics have somatic effects in political expressions that transform the epidemic into national security dramas which should not, for the sake of efficient health governance, be treated as aspects extraneous to the disease itself. The book highlights that when a serious infectious disease spreads, a 'threat' is very often externalized into a culturally meaningful 'foreign' entity. Pandemics tend to be territorialized, nationalized, ethnicized, and racialized. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of global health and governance, pandemic security, epidemics, history of medicine, geopolitics, international relations, and general readers interested in the COVID-19 pandemic.

Driftless by Ariele Sieling Pdf

Kaia has won the opportunity of a lifetime: the chance to intern at the Globe Center under the tutelage of John, one of the most brilliant scientists and mathematicians in the world. But the moment she sets foot inside the building, she realizes it won’t be easy. John has his fingers in nearly every project, and plans to drag her along with him. To top off her first day, a group of thieves infiltrates the building, seeking to steal a specific Door—a portal that can travel somewhere else in the universe—and John, Kaia, and Clyde, the newest security officer at the Globe, end up smack dab in the middle of the chaos. Meanwhile, on the other side of the universe, Holland, Admiral of a Zirian colony fleet traveling to a newly discovered planet, has just woken up from stasis to discover that her brother is dead, as are many of the colonists who were traveling with her, and her fleet is infected by a very odd digital virus. Somehow, Holland has to get her fleet back on track, while at the same time, Kaia and John have to manage the chaos back home. And the consequences of failure could mean the end of Holland’s fleet, and possibly the end of their entire civilization. This portal fiction novel is the third book in the Zirian Chronicles series. Turbulent Waters by Ralph C. Bryant Pdf

The world economy at the end of the twentieth century was afflicted with financial turbulence. Millions of people in emerging-market nations endured severe recessions, and many residents of wealthy nations also experienced losses. Some scholars describe this instability as a consequence of a progressively integrated global economy. Writing for the Washington Post, Jessica Matthews describe an "enormous, several trillion-dollar pool of money that sloshes around in what is effectively a supranational cyberspace, moving by computer in and out of off-shore banks and chasing profits in twenty-four hour markets."Spanning the disciplines of economics, finance, political economy and international relations, this wide-ranging, analytical review is a mainstream "primer" for defining the issues and catalyzing a fruitful public debate. It is grounded in an exposition of the analytic fundamentals of financial activity, how those fundamentals apply to an integrating (but still far from perfectly integrated) world economy and financial system, and how the institutions of collective governance need to be adapted to that evolving world. In addition to its analytical overview, Turbulent Waters offers practical recommendations for the major financial challenges that policymakers will face during the first decades of the twenty-first century.

Einstein and the Generations of Science by David Abshire Pdf

This absorbing intellectual history vividly recreates the unique social, political, and philosophical milieu in which the extraordinary promise of Einstein and scientific contemporaries took root and flourished into greatness. Feuer shows us that no scientific breakthrough really happens by chance; it takes a certain intellectual climate, a decisive tension within the very fabric of society, to spur one man's potential genius into world-shaking achievement. Feuer portrays such men of high imaginative powers as Einstein, Bohr, Heisenberg, de Broglie, influenced by and influencing the social worlds in which they lived.
