Great Pyrenees by Juliette Cunliffe Pdf

As magnificent as the range whose name it bears, the Great Pyrenees (or Pyrenean Mountain Dog, as the breed is known in England) is a powerful, natural guard dog whose immense strength and quiet confidence elevate the breed beyond the realm of ordinary working dogs. The Great Pyrenees's attractive white coat and beautifully domed head impart an elegance to the breed that speaks to its unmistakable antiquity and purity. As the history chapter of this Comprehensive Owner's Guide discusses, the Great Pyrenees was originally bred as a livestock guardian in the Basque mountainous region between France and Spain, where it was called upon to protect flocks from wolves, bears, and other large predators. The modern-day development of the breed in Europe and its spread to England and the United States are covered in considerable detail. Owners considering adding a Pyr to their home and lives will profit from the chapter on breed characteristics which catalogs the breed's virtues as well as drawbacks. Considering the great size of the breed, its protective instincts, and its need of space, the awe-inspiring Great Pyrenees doesn't fit easily into every possible living situation. Of course, owners who do believe they can meet the challenges of Pyr ownership will be rewarded with a fearless, loyal, good-natured companion for life.New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

The Complete Guide to the Great Pyrenees by Erin Hotovy Pdf

If you’re looking for a big dog with an even bigger heart, the Great Pyrenees may be the dog for you! These gentle giants are fiercely loyal to their owners and make great family pets. Great Pyrenees are cuddly, adorable dogs that love to play and have a good time. They are smart and hardworking, but they have a mind of their own. Because of their tendency to be mischievous, these dogs are best suited for someone with prior dog ownership experience. It may take a little work to train a Great Pyrenees to follow your rules, but once you do, you’ll have a companion for life.

Great Pyrenees were originally bred to guard shepherds’ flocks. Today, they find work as service dogs because they love to be close to people who matter to them. They’re especially good for nursing home residents or people who use wheelchairs, as they’re tall enough to stand beside someone in a chair. These dogs may also find “work” as your family watchdog, as they have superior hearing and a loud bark. However, if you don’t have work for your Great Pyrenees, regular obedience training and lots of playtime will still give your dog the job fulfillment he craves.

The Complete Guide to the Great Pyrenees will answer all your basic questions including:

Medical, Genetic & Behavioral Risk Factors of the Great Pyrenees by Dr. Ross D. Clark, DVM Pdf

This book (Great Pyenees) provides you with a through description and positive attributes of this breed including origin, purpose, history, normal heights and weights, acceptable colors and behavioral traits. Our books differ from most books on dog breeds because this book also provides you with a comprehensive and authoritative source of all the known predisposed hereditary health syndromes for the breed. You will find extensive references for each problem described. We also provide the breed club address for this breed and a list of laboratories and organizations that can provide professional help and information. As a small animal veterinarian, I have always been intrigued by the way dogs have been bred to fill a purpose in life and further impressed that they also tend to love performing that service. Greyhounds and other sight hounds are built for speed with aerodynamic bodies consisting of small head, deep chest, narrow waist and large leg muscles. On the other hand Dachshunds take their name from German words meaning “badger dog” and they use their long nose, long body and short legs to both track, enter and dig into badger dens. After developing a practice that catered to clients with show dogs, my interest in each breed continued to grow as I studied and observed more and more about the unique predisposition and incidence of health problems in each breed. Breeders of purebred dogs for show were a challenge and inspirational for me to research and help them with their unique health problems. Historically references to hereditary problems are scattered throughout various Veterinary medical texts and journals such as ophthalmology, neurology, gastroenterology, cardiovascular and dermatology. This book, as well as the other books and articles I have written, is researched and compiled with the intention to provide both veterinarians and dog owners with comprehensive and authoritative predisposition information under the breed name. At the date of this publication, The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the The Kennel Club of England reports over 400 known hereditary health syndromes throughout the dog kingdom. At the writing of my first book in 1983, less than 50 hereditary issues are able to be predicted and or diagnosed. Sequencing of the canine genome, DNA tests, metabolic testing including blood tests and urine testing; plus, phenotypic examinations such as radiographs, ultrasound, and CERF or OFA eye registry exams by a Board Certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist have advanced the science of breed related health and behavioral problems. This book will provide veterinarians, researchers, pet owners and breeders with a comprehensive guide to all the known problems veterinarians and dog owners should consider during pet selection and throughout each life stage of our canine friends.
