Greek Letters by Michael S. Macrakis,Greek Font Society Pdf

Written by some of the foremost typographic and book history scholars in the world such as Hermann Zapf, Nicolas Barker, and Nicolas Panayotakis, these essays bring to life the rich history and development of the Greek letter form: its role in the history of the printed word and civilization, the urgent need for quality modern fonts, and the challenges faced by the current and future realm of Greek type design. In response to these challenges, the Greek Font Society formed in 1992 to promote and design quality Greek fonts for printing and use on the computer screen. The Society also gathered some of the most respected professionals, designers, and scholars at the first International Symposium on the Evolution of the Greek Alphabet and published the papers presented on these topics, now contained in this volume, Greek Letters.

Greek Alphabet by Catherine R. Proppe Pdf

What do the letters of the ancient Greek alphabet mean? Conventionally, the answer is that they are simply sounds without meaning. But the thing is, the ancient Greeks saw meaning in everything. They equated the natural world with the divine. They studied the world to understand divinity. In doing so, the ancient Greeks created the foundation of modern math, science, democracy, medicine, art, architecture, and language. In a culture that saw meaning in everything, is it likely that their written record consisted of sounds without meaning? Not very. Greek letters have meaning. Greek Alphabet: Unlock the Secrets explains why Greek letters are shaped the way they are, what they mean, and how these letters are used to form meaningful words. Spoiler alert: Omega is most definitely not the last letter of the Greek alphabet.

Alpha to Omega by Alexander Humez,Nicholas D. Humez Pdf

In the first offering of this beloved duo, the Humez brothers take on the twenty-four letters of the Greek alphabet (plus those elusive "dead letters"), and through the device of the abecedarium bring the Greek culture and thought to life. From acoustics to zygote, they provide not only an engaging romp through the Greek language but also a series of glimpses into the world and man's place in it. The historical, philosophical, mathematical, cosmological, and political (all Greek words) approaches we take toward life, its description, elucidation, and evaluation, are all mainly derived from several thousand years of Greek culture. The vocabulary of language is a mirror of the minds of its speakers, and in this book we see the first reflections of the modern world.

Greek and Latin Letters by Michael Trapp Pdf

The 78 letters in this Anthology (41 Greek, 36 Latin and 1 bilingual, with facing English translation) are selected both for their intrinsic interest, and to illustrate the range of functions letters performed in the ancient world. Dating from between c. 500 BC and c. 400 AD, they include naive and high-style, 'real' and 'fictitious', and classical and patristic items: Cicero, Horace, Ovid, Seneca, Pliny, Julian, Basil and Augustine are juxtaposed with Phalaris, Diogenes, Chion, and the authors of letters on lead, wood, papyrus and stone. Four final items exemplify ancient epistolary theory. The Commentary, besides providing contextual and linguistic assistance, draws attention to specifically epistolary features and to different stylistic levels of Greek and Latin represented. Epistolary topics and formulae are discussed in the Introduction, which also provides biographical and bibliographical information on all texts and authors included, and a history of letter-writing and letter-reading in antiquity.

Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the 21st Century by Gregory S. Parks Pdf

“A masterpiece of multidisciplinary scholarship that clearly demonstrates the contemporary relevance of black fraternities and sororities.” —Hasan Kwame Jeffries, author of Bloody Lowndes During the twentieth century, black Greek-Letter organizations (BGLOs) united college students dedicated to excellence, fostered kinship, and uplifted African Americans. Members of these organizations include remarkable and influential individuals such as Martin Luther King Jr., Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, novelist Toni Morrison, and Wall Street pioneer Reginald F. Lewis. Despite the profound influence of these groups, many now question the continuing relevance of BGLOs, arguing that their golden age has passed. To foster a greater engagement with the history and contributions of BGLOs, Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the Twenty-first Century brings together an impressive group of authors to explore the contributions and continuing possibilities of BGLOs and their members. Editor Gregory S. Parks and the contributing authors provide historical context for the development of BGLOs, exploring their service activities as well as their relationships with other prominent African American institutions. Both internally and externally, BGLOs struggle to forge a relevant identity for the new century. Internally, these groups wrestle with many issues, including hazing, homophobia, petty intergroup competition, and the difficulty of bridging the divide between college and alumni members. Externally, BGLOs face the challenge of rededicating themselves to their communities and leading an aggressive campaign against modern forms of racism, sexism, and other types of fear-driven behavior. By embracing the history of these organizations and exploring their continuing viability and relevance, Black Greek-Letter Organizations in the Twenty-first Century demonstrates that BGLOs can create a positive and enduring future and that their most important work lies ahead.

My First Greek Letters by Myrto Kyprianidi Pdf

This book is aimed at 5-7 years old children who learn Greek as a second language and whose both or one parent is a Greek speaker. Through my experience and in-depth observation on this group of students at Greek schools in Greece and in San Francisco, I identified and documented the unique educational needs of this specific group of students. Based on this observation arose the need for a teaching tool - handbook for children who learn the Greek language as a second or a foreign language. The main concern and goal for this book was it to be enjoyable for every student and easy-to-use, while at the same time ensuring that the student works effectively, independently, confidently and structured, regarding the learning objectives set. This book aspires to support educators who are teaching Greek to Greek-as-a-second or foreign language students. My goal is through this textbook to ensure a pleasant and friendly experience to the student, allowing for effective, independent, and structured, learning. Through this book, the student will: be introduced to the Greek Alphabet. recognize the Sound - Letter correspondences [relationships between sounds (or phonemes) and the letters (or graphemes)]. learn the shape and morphology of each letter as well as how it is written. learn basic vocabulary associated with each letter. practice visual and auditory recognition of the letters. write correctly every letter of the Greek Alphabet. spell and by finishing the book also read small words. enrich the vocabulary and broaden his/her imagination, with the stories at the end of every letter - unit. The main focus of this handbook is the Greek Alphabet, presented in various forms of activities that promote the experiential learning method and language development. Among other activities in the book, students are asked to phonetically identify the letters of the Alphabet and match them to visual images as well as to the respective letter. This way students practice and build vocabulary and spelling skills. Additionally, by using the included interactive software, students are given the opportunity to interact independently and actively with the alphabet. In addition, students can color in pictures at the book related to each letter of the alphabet. Approaching learning from a variety of learning styles students increase their ability to learn and improve their learning strategies and skills.

The Textualization of the Greek Alphabet by Roger D. Woodard Pdf

In this book, Roger D. Woodard argues that when the Greeks first began to use the alphabet, they viewed themselves as participants in a performance phenomenon conceptually modeled on the performances of the oral poets. Since a time older than Greek antiquity, the oral poets of Indo-European tradition had been called 'weavers of words' - their extemporaneous performance of poetry was 'word weaving'. With the arrival of the new technology of the alphabet and the onset of Greek literacy, the very act of producing written symbols was interpreted as a comparable performance activity, albeit one in which almost everyone could participate, not only the select few. It was this new conceptualization of and participation in performance activity by the masses that eventually, or perhaps quickly, resulted in the demise of oral composition in performance in Greece. In conjunction with this investigation, Woodard analyzes a set of copper plaques inscribed with repeated alphabetic series and a line of what he interprets to be text, which attests to this archaic Greek conceptualization of the performance of symbol crafting.

Life and Letters in the Ancient Greek World by John Muir Pdf

From the first ‘deadly signs’ scratched on a wooden tablet instructing the recipient to kill the one who delivered it, to the letters of St Paul to the early Church, this book examines the range of letter writing in the Ancient Greek world. Containing extensive translated examples from both life and fiction, it provides a glimpse into the lives of both ordinary people and political life. This comprehensive study looks at personal and private letters, letters used in administration and government, letters used as vehicles for the dissemination of philosophy and religion, and letters which played a part in the development of several literary genres. The way in which letters were written and with what materials, how they were delivered, and how it is that, for certain limited periods and locations, so many of them have survived and how they were re-discovered. By placing these letters in their social, political and intellectual contexts, Life and Letters in the Ancient Greek World draws attention to both familiar topics, such as young soldiers writing home from basic training and the choice of flowers for a wedding, and more alien events, such as getting rid of baby girls and offhand attitudes to bereavement. This first guide in English to provide commentary on such a broad range of letters, will be essential reading for anyone interested in the Ancient Greek World.
