Gregory Crewdson: Alone Street by Anonim Pdf

Alone Street brings together two major bodies of work by Gregory Crewdson, Cathedral of the Pines (Aperture, 2016) and An Eclipse of Moths (Aperture, 2020), in a single, elegant, and affordable monograph. Both series expand on the artist's obsessive exploration of the psychogeography of small-town, post-industrial New England and underscore the precision and depth of Crewdson's unique mode of photographic storytelling. In each image, light, color, and carefully crafted scenography evoke the feeling that, as art historian Alexander Nemerov has astutely described, "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long-gone who once stood on those spots." In addition to the full set of images from each series, Alone Street, presents a selection of behind-the-scenes images and storyboards, revealing the extensive preparation and planning that went into the making of each work.

Cathedral of the Pines by Alexander Nemerov Pdf

Cathedral of the Pines presents Gregory Crewdson's first new body of work in over five years. The series marks a return to Crewdson's classic style of storytelling via the single image, using light and color to create newly intimate, psychologically charged imagery. It also marks a time of transition for the artist, including a retreat from New York to a remote home and studio in western Massachusetts--a period of time during which Crewdson chose to remain socially withdrawn, instead committing to daily, long-distance, open-water swims and cross-country skiing on wooded paths. Cathedral of the Pines is named after one of these trails, deep in the forests of Becket, Massachusetts, the site where he found the inspiration to make these new pictures. It was there that he felt darkness lift, experienced a reconnection with his artistic process, and moved into a period of renewal and intense creative productivity. The photographs are accompanied by an essay by Alexander Nemerov, who addresses the work in relation to the American past, focusing in particular on the way the images draw space and time down to ceremonial points, in which "all that ever happened in these places seems crystallized in his tableaux, as if the quiet melancholy of Crewdson's scenes gathered the unruly sorrows and other little-guessed feelings of people long gone who once stood on those spots." Gregory Crewdson (born 1962) is a graduate of SUNY Purchase and the Yale School of Art, where he is now Director of Graduate Studies in Photography. His series Beneath the Roses is the subject of the 2012 documentary Gregory Crewdson: Brief Encounters. His work has been exhibited widely in the US and Europe, including a survey that toured throughout Europe from 2001 to 2008. He is represented by Gagosian Gallery, New York.

Gregory Crewdson: An Eclipse of Moths by Anonim Pdf

An Eclipse of Moths extends Gregory Crewdson's obsessive exploration of the small-town, postindustrial American landscape. Each of these sixteen, never-before-published images is composed at a cinematic scale with the artist's signature auteurial care. Downed streetlights, abandoned baby carriages, and decommissioned carnival rides set the scene for a cast of classic Crewdsonian characters--full of equal parts yearning and ennui. This collection of images is offered in a limited-edition, slipcased volume, sumptuously produced at a scale that offers an immersive experience of each of these carefully crafted scenes.

The 50 Francis Street Photographer by Suzanne Behan Pdf

From the 1950s to the 1990s, John Walsh ran his photography business out of a small shop on 50 Francis Street in inner city Dublin. For over forty years, he took thousands of photos on all aspects of Dublin life - funerals, communions, weddings, christening, concerts, and events. Here in this collection, for the first time ever, the images from the 50s and 60s are brought together with the words of his granddaughter Suzanne Behan to give us a unique and nostalgic look of an integral part of changing city. From religious processions and Dublin traditions, to when women drank in the snug and the 'good suit' came in and out of the pawn shop when needed, The 50 Francis Street Photographer is a collection of stunning, original photographs, a fascinating social history and celebration of people and places.

Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place by Gregory Crewdson,Craig Burnett Pdf

Although these series illustrate distinct subject matter, they share Crewdson's unique preoccupations and compelling aesthetic. "Fireflies" is the result of two solitary summer months spent photographing the fireflies that came alive at dusk each evening. "Beneath the Roses" depicts the homes, streets, and forests of unnamed small towns, revealing emotionally charged moments in the lives of seemingly ordinary individuals. In "Sanctuary," haunting images of the legendary Italian film studio Cinecitta capture the beauty of the decaying film sets. Texts from curators of the exhibition and Crewdson himself offer fresh insight and examine the parallels between these seemingly disparate subjects. Celebrating some of the artist's greatest work, this volume is a must-have for any Crewdson fan and the perfect introduction to those discovering him for the first time. Praise for Gregory Crewdson: In a Lonely Place "Whether one is exploring Crewdson's work for the first time, or revisiting his images, text from both the artist himself and the curators involved gives the reader a personal interaction with Crewdson that illustrates his passion for capturing the lives of others." --Huffington Post

Western Motel by Kunsthalle Wien Pdf

American painter Edward Hopper once said, "Maybe I am not very human--what I wanted to do was to paint sunlight on the side of a house." Indeed, Hopper's canvases delineate a new physics of Modern public space, in which the zones between people are not charged with responsiveness (affection, animosity, attraction) but with absolute indifference. Whether alone or grouped, Hopper's solitary figures bespeak Modern metropolitan conditions with a clarity that is deepened by his very specific ability to capture architecture, interior space and, of course, light. The legacy of this vision, coupled with Hopper's unique vocabulary, can be seen in the work of numerous artists today, who are also featured here. Among them are Ed Ruscha, Jim Jarmusch, Todd Haynes, Richard Prince, Rachel Whiteread, Jeff Wall, Markus Schinwald, Philip Lorca diCorcia, David Claerbout, Mark Lewis and Tim Eitel.

On Henry Miller by John Burnside Pdf

An engaging invitation to rediscover Henry Miller—and to learn how his anarchist sensibility can help us escape “the air-conditioned nightmare” of the modern world The American writer Henry Miller's critical reputation--if not his popular readership—has been in eclipse at least since Kate Millett's blistering critique in Sexual Politics, her landmark 1970 study of misogyny in literature and art. Even a Miller fan like the acclaimed Scottish writer John Burnside finds Miller's "sex books"—including The Rosy Crucifixion, Tropic of Cancer, and Tropic of Capricorn—"boring and embarrassing." But Burnside says that Miller's notorious image as a "pornographer and woman hater" has hidden his vital, true importance—his anarchist sensibility and the way it shows us how, by fleeing from conformity of all kinds, we may be able to save ourselves from the "air-conditioned nightmare" of the modern world. Miller wrote that "there is no salvation in becoming adapted to a world which is crazy," and in this short, engaging, and personal book, Burnside shows how Miller teaches us to become less adapted to the world, to resist a life sentence to the prison of social, intellectual, emotional, and material conditioning. Exploring the full range of Miller's work, and giving special attention to The Air-Conditioned Nightmare and The Colossus of Maroussi, Burnside shows how, with humor and wisdom, Miller illuminates the misunderstood tradition of anarchist thought. Along the way, Burnside reflects on Rimbaud's enormous influence on Miller, as well as on how Rimbaud and Miller have influenced his own writing. An unconventional and appealing account of an unjustly neglected writer, On Henry Miller restores to us a figure whose searing criticism of the modern world has never been more relevant.

Sara Cwynar: Glass Life by Anonim Pdf

A feminist-inflected investigation of color and image-driven consumer culture, Glass Life brings together Sara Cwynar's multilayered portraits and stills from the films Soft Film (2016), Rose Gold (2017), and Red Film (2018). Cwynar's research-driven and visually complex images constitute the hallmarks of contemporary post-Pictures Generation work--in which photography is pursued in relation to film, sculpture, digital culture, and the cultural and technological history of image-making. Cwynar's work revolves around her interest in subjective notions of beauty through images; the fetishization of consumer objects and colors; and the exploration of the informal image archives that have emerged around the industrialization and capitalization of these ideas. As part of her core practice, Cwynar collects, arranges, and archives her eBay purchases and creates studio studies of these consumer objects, exploring how images circulate online and how the lives and purposes of both physical objects and their likenesses change over time. Sara Cwynar: Glass Life is a must-have sourcebook for understanding the multilayered practice of this celebrated, multidisciplinary artist.

Alison and Peter Smithson by Mark Crinson Pdf

This is the first overview of the career of Alison and Peter Smithson, the most controversial yet most widely-influential of post-war architectural practices. From their first youthful project, the school at Hunstanton, to their final works, they epitomised the idea of the avant-garde architect, and were strongly engaged with artists and critics and with groups and tendencies in Britain and beyond. 0Structured thematically and chronologically, the book gives a coherent and compact narrative of the Smithsons' work and ideas. As well as all of the major buildings - including the Economist complex, the Garden building at St Hilda's College, and the Robin Hood Gardens estate - the book also discusses unbuilt projects, including substantial work for the British embassy at Brasilia and the Kuwait mat-building. It culminates with the less well-known factory additions, museum and house for Axel Bruchhauser, a furniture manufacturer in Germany. Central to their work, Mark Crinson argues, was a concern with belonging, with how we identify ourselves with places in a context of change.0Lavishly illustrated with new colour images as well as original drawings and historic photography, this book is an essential read for architects, students and enthusiasts for modernism wanting to learn more about the Smithsons.
