Evaluation of Sources of Poor Quality Ground Water in the Bothwell Pocket Area, Lower Bear River Valley, Eastern Box Elder County, Utah by Janae Wallace,Kevin J. Thomas,Mike Lowe Pdf

This CD-ROM contains a 50 page report and a map at 1:24,000 scale in PDF format that describes the ground-water conditions in the Bothwell Pocket's basin-fill aquifer and addresses 1- whether a decline in water levels during different pumping seasons has occurred 2- the relationship of ground-water to geology and land use in the drainage basin 3- if water-quality degradation due to encroachment of poor quality ground water is occurring 4- the relative age of water from selected water wells and 5- if the potentiometric surface of the basin-fill aquifer is declining.

Regional groundwater flow and water quality in the Virgin River Basin and surrounding areas, Utah and Arizona by Paul Inkenbrandt,Kevin Thomas,J. Lucy Jordan Pdf

In this 46-page report, we characterized the deep aquifer system and its connections to the overlying aquifers in the area of the Hurricane fault in Washington County by examining well logs, creating regional potentiometric-surface maps, compiling groundwater quality data, conducting gravity surveys, examining remote sensing data for surface lineaments, and determining areas for potential monitoring wells. Results of the study were: (1) R and C aquifer groundwater depths are > 500 feet in the I-15 corridor area, (2) a groundwater divide likely exists south of the Utah-Arizona state line, (3) groundwater flow follows open fracture systems, (4) fracture conductivity is highest near the fault, (5) dissolution of evaporites increase groundwater TDS, and (6) a well should be drilled into the Hurricane fault near Pintura.

Groundwater Management in the West by Jeffrey S. Ashley,Zachary Alden Smith Pdf

One of the greatest conundrums facing the arid western United States is the availability, use, and quality of groundwater. In large sections of the West, groundwater is the only dependable source of water for agricultural production and home consumption. Yet many of the aquifers are being depleted at a rate that will suck them dry within a century. Furthermore, dependence upon groundwater in many areas will only increase in the future. This dependence is already having serious consequences for small towns on the Great Plains. Faced with growing costs associated with deeper wells and the need for ever more advanced technology for extracting water, these towns find they lack the resources to maintain current agricultural practices. ΓΈ In this timely assessment of the West?s groundwater resources, the authors provide a detailed overview of groundwater management in the Western states. The authors present for each state the various management strategies, laws, and political realities that have made groundwater appropriation such a volatile subject. They also suggest possible difficulties that states and regions might face under current groundwater policies. By examining separate cases and viewing the West as a whole, the authors are able to identify not only the most pressing problems but also the most appropriate management techniques for protecting water supplies for future use.

Ground-water Quality Classification and Recommended Septic Tank Soil-absorption-system Density Maps, Castle Valley, Grand County, Utah by Mike Lowe,Janae Wallace,Charles Bishop,Hugh Hurlow Pdf

"This CD-ROM contains a 30 page report with 22 page appendix, and seven maps at 1:15,000 to 1:30,000 scale in easily readable PDF format that address ground-water quality in Castle Valley's valley-fill aquifer and provide recommendations for septic tank soil-absorption-system density based on potential water-quality degradation associated with use of these systems. The maps are described in detail in the report and show geology, valley-fill thickness, total-dissolved-solids concentration, nitrate concentration, ground-water quality class, potential containment sources, and recommended lot size."--Sticker on back of case.
