In Search of Synergy in Small Group Performance by James R. Larson, Jr. Pdf

This volume critically evaluates more than a century of empirical research on the effectiveness of small, task-performing groups, and offers a fresh look at the costs and benefits of collaborative work arrangements. The central question taken up by this book is whether -- and under what conditions -- interaction among group members leads to better performance than would otherwise be achieved simply by combining the separate efforts of an equal number of people who work independently. This question is considered with respect to a range of tasks (idea-generation, problem solving, judgment, and decision-making) and from several different process perspectives (learning and memory, motivation, and member diversity). As a framework for assessing the empirical literature, the book introduces the concept of 'synergy.' Synergy refers to an objective gain in performance that is attributable to group interaction. Further, it distinguishes between weak and strong synergy, which are performance gains of different magnitude. The book highlights the currently available empirical evidence for both weak and strong synergy, identifies the conditions that seem necessary to produce each, and suggests where the search for synergy might best be directed in the future. The book is at once a high-level introduction to the field, a review of the field's history, and a scholarly critique of the current state-of-the-art. As such, it is essential reading for graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and researchers interested in group dynamics generally -- and small group performance in particular.

Group Performance by Bernard A. Nijstad Pdf

People interact and perform in group settings in all areas of life. Organizations and businesses are increasingly structuring work around groups and teams. Every day, we work in groups such as families, friendship groups, societies and sports teams, to make decisions and plans, solve problems, perform physical tasks, generate creative ideas, and more. Group Performance outlines the current state of social psychological theories and findings concerning the performance of groups. It explores the basic theories surrounding group interaction and development and investigates how groups affect their members. Bernard A. Nijstad discusses these issues in relation to the many different tasks that groups may perform, including physical tasks, idea generation and brainstorming, decision-making, problem-solving, and making judgments and estimates. Finally, the book closes with an in-depth discussion of teamwork and the context in which groups interact and perform. Offering an integrated approach, with particular emphasis on the interplay between group members, the group task, interaction processes and context, this book provides a state-of-the-art overview of social psychological theory and research. It will be highly valuable to undergraduates, graduates and researchers in social psychology, organizational behavior and business.

An Additional Metric for Communicating Group Performance Differences by Jay M. Silva Pdf

"The common practice of expressing group performance differences in standard deviation units conveys useful but limited information. Reporting the percentage of the time a member from a lower performing group is expected to outperform a member from a higher performing group would enhance understanding of the magnitude of the difference. Furthermore, the proposed percentage metric is able to easily deal with group variability differences in addition to mean group differences. An analytical approach was used to convert group performance differences from standard deviation units to the proposed metric. The slope of the relationship between the two metrics is nearly linear through a one standard deviation group performance difference. Tables are presented that can be used to convert group performance differences in standard deviation units to the new metric."--DTIC.

Research on small groups is highly diverse because investigators who study such groups vary in their disciplinary identifications, theoretical interests, and methodological preferences. The goal of this volume is to capture that diversity, and thereby convey the breadth and excitement of small group research by acquainting students with work on five fundamental aspects of groups. The volume also includes an introductory chapter by the editors which provides an overview of the history of and current state-of-the-art in the field. Basic Group Processes by P. B. Paulus Pdf

Research on groups has been a major focus of concern among psychologists and sociologists for many years. The study of groups certainly deserves a central role in these disciplines since much of our behavior occurs in groups and many important social phenomena involve groups. Issues such as leadership, conformity, group decision-making, group task performance, and coalition formation have had a long history of research. However, recently a number of other areas of research have blossomed that provide interesting new perspectives on group processes (e.g., social impact). In addition, topics of research have developed outside the commonly ac cepted domain of group dynamics (e.g., self-disclosure) which seem to be concerned with rather basic group processes. Basic Group Processes was designed to bring together in one volume a repre sentative sample of the broad range of work currently being done in the area of groups. Some of the chapters provide a review of the literature while others focus more specifically on current programs of research. All, however, provide new insights into basic group processes and a number provide broad integrative schemes. All of the authors were asked to emphasize theoretical issues rather than a detailed presenta tion of research. Basic Group Processes suggests that research on groups is a lively enterprise and forging interesting new theoretical and empirical directions.

The Three Laws of Performance by Steve Zaffron,Dave Logan Pdf

In our work lives when something isnt working, we struggle with what part of the problem to tackle first. Do we start with cost reduction? What about morale? Or should we go for process improvements first? We pick the problem to work on, and depending on whether our plan makes sense, one of two things happens.  First, we failand then we add frustration to our list of problems. Two, we succeed, and then some new problem pops out to replace the old. We cut 10% out of our budget, and our star performers leave in frustration because we sliced what they saw as a critical program. Its as though the system were working on is an old inner tube. The moment we patch one hole and add pressure, another spot tears open. The point is that its possible to change everything at once. Seem far fetched? Zaffron and Logan make a compelling argument that executives spend their time and money adjusting the systems in which people operate rather than targeting people's performance directly. When the three laws in this book are applied, performance transforms to a level far beyond what most people think is possible. These laws are: 1. How people perform correlates to how situations occur to them. 2. How a situation occurs arises from language. 3. Future-based language transforms how situations occur to people. Steve Zaffron has helped hundreds of companies envision and effectively implement major change and performance improvement. He presents a proven system for rallying all of an organization's employees around a new vision, and more importantly, making it stick. The focus is on making such transformations permanent and repeatable, providing practical examples from clients such as Apple, Lockheed Martin, Johnson & Johnson,  Morgan Stanley, and many others.
