Modern Fathers by Thomas Schirrmacher Pdf

There have always been good fathers and bad fathers. But never before in history has the role of fathers been as undefined as it is today. hardly anyone who becomes a father is entering the race with a religious, cultural or educational assignment. This involves many drawbacks. But instead of just deploring this fact, I want committed fathers to recognize and exploit the new opportunities involved in this. Especially the freedom from old role models opens up completely new possibilities for fathers to take on an hugely positive task for the development of their children and to cultivate a stable relationship with the mother, which lives from the difference of the sexes.

Inter-professional Approaches to Young Fathers by Jane Reeves Pdf

With one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe, young fatherhood, as a site of economic and personal adversity, has become a focus of concern in Britain during the late 1990OCOs. However, despite this policy interest there is surprisingly little British empirical evidence to review. One of the aims of the book is to draw together contemporary research evidence, social theory and policy which may effect how practitioners, students and academics conceptualise and work with young fathers. Consequently, each chapter illustrates the points it makes using discrete evidence from that particular field. Moreover, in order to make this process more OCyuser friendlyOCO each chapter provides a summary of this literature and evidence. Finally, in order to make the book come alive it draws on case studies, which are drawn, variously, from two studies conducted by the editor."

Fathers and Forefathers by Martin Robb Pdf

Research on fathers and fatherhood has blossomed in recent years, focusing, for the most part, on present-day fathering experiences but also beginning to uncover hidden narratives of past fatherhood. This collection aims to add something new to this expanding field by exploring the dynamic relationship between present and past fatherhoods. The popular understanding of fathers in past generations, as being detached and uninvolved in the lives of their children, can be said to play a significant part in the construction of modern fathering identities, with ideas of “new” fatherhood being played off against notions of historical fathering practices. However, research has begun to show that these popular myths often misremember the past, judging it by current standards and obscuring the diverse nature of fathering practices in the recent and distant past. A genealogical approach is able to critically examine these intergenerational constructions of fatherhood and more positively illuminate the ways in which experiences of fathering and being fathered are passed on between generations. The contributions to this collection use a genealogical approach (broadly defined) to fathering and fatherhood as a way of defamiliarizing accepted narratives and suggesting new ways of thinking about men and their relationships with their children.

The New Patriarchs of Digital Capitalism by Ben Little,Alison Winch Pdf

This book offers an original critique of the billionaire founders of US West Coast tech companies, addressing their collective power, influence, and ideology, their group dynamics, and the role they play in the wider sociocultural and political formations of digital capitalism. Interrogating not only the founders’ political and economic ambitions, but also how their corporations are omnipresent in our everyday lives, the authors provide robust evidence that a specific kind of patriarchal power has emerged as digital capitalism’s mode of command. The ‘New Patriarchs’ examined over the course of the book include: Sergey Brin and Larry Page of Google, Elon Musk of Tesla, Jeff Bezos of Amazon, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, and Peter Thiel. We also include Sheryl Sandberg. The book analyses how these (mostly) men legitimate their rapidly acquired power, tying a novel kind of socially awkward but ‘visionary’ masculinity to exotic forms of shareholding. Drawing on a ten million word digital concordance, the authors intervene in feminist debates on patriarchy, masculinity, and postfeminism, locating the power of the founders as emanating from a specifically racialised structure of oppression tied to imaginaries of the American frontier, the patriarchal household, and settler colonialism. This is an important interdisciplinary contribution suitable for researchers and students across Digital Media, Media and Communication, and Gender and Cultural Studies.

Reassessing Fatherhood by Charlie Lewis,Margaret O'Brien Pdf

Much recent literature on fathers conveys the optimistic message that men are becoming increasingly involved in family life and that such participation is necessarily beneficial. This book contends that evidence for the new father' is, in reality, hard to find and that the paternal role persists in being limited by social, institutional and personal forces. The book's contributors, psychologists and sociologists from Britain, Australia, Scandanavia and North America, examine the problematic nature of fatherhood from three different perspectives. Part One examines research evidence from studies of fathers in typical' families. Chapters look at the history of paternal roles, the employment of both fathers and mothers and men's involvement with other members of the family; all share the thesis that, given contemporary ideologies, fathering is necessarily limited. Part Two critically reviews research on men who -- encouraged by enlightened' social policy makers -- have attempted to become more involved in child care and domestic responsibilities. The contributors point out the contradictions between the expectations of the policy makers and the realities of family life: greater involvement in the home by men usually causes stress and difficulties for other members, particularly mothers. Part Three considers the position of men in therapeutic settings, where the father is often seen as a passive, opaque figure with whom it is difficult to work, and offers sound advice on how family workers can incorporate men into counselling, social work and therapy. Two chapters also investigate the role that custody arrangements play in the divorced father's life. ReassessingFatherhood provides a fresh -- and often provocative -- view of the modern father that will change the complacent and euphoric vision of the new family'.

Father to My Siblings by Olivier Sempiga Pdf

Nadina works as a journalist on a private television in her country. She writes a series of e-mails to her father, who passed on to the other world during a war that tore apart her beloved nation. She relates her story of resilience, perseverance, and courage after a breakthrough is achieved in communication and people from this world are able to communicate with other people in the other world of the living dead. She expresses her struggles in taking care of her siblings. Technically, Nadina becomes the father of her siblings as she cares for each and every aspect of their needs. The father, who is the last to die, leaves the five children still in school. Nadina works her socks off to feed these children, to pay for their school fees, and to see them become independent. Nadina criticises some political, economic, and social structures of her country (no name is given, but it is an allegory of African states) and calls for an end to rampant poverty, wars, and conflicts. Despite being outspoken and critical of the government, Nadina is appointed minister of information. With this new status, her dream to fight poverty and bring about peace has just begun.
