Hamlet by William Shakespeare Pdf

A morbid tragedy about mortality, madness, and murder, Hamlet follows the eponymous Prince of Denmark as he plots to avenge his father's murder at the hands of Claudius, Hamlet's uncle and the current king, who married Hamlet's mother, Gertrude. Haunted by a ghost and arguing with his girlfriend Ophelia, Hamlet struggles to take revenge, as delay and feigned insanity preoccupy him. Rounding out the cast are other famous figures, like Horatio, and Polonius, and of course, the Gravedigger, who finds the skull of "poor Yorick." Perhaps Shakespeare's most popular play, Hamlet.

The Subjection of Hamlet by William Leighton Pdf

Excerpt from The Subjection of Hamlet: An Essay Toward an Explanation of the Motives of Thought and Action of Shakespeare's Prince of Denmark Ago, Karl Werder, of Germany, promulgated his original and fascinating theory of the character of Hamlet; one so different from anything heretofore conceived of the prince, and one developed with such plausible ingenuity and force of illustration, that it startled for a while the world of thinkers; and men began to believe that they had, at last, found a solid basis of fact on which to account for the puzzling motives and actions of the character. Instead of being a doubter in thought, and a procrasti nator in deed, we were told that Hamlet was a quick witted and self-reliant man of business, taking advantage of every opportunity to execute his plans of revenge according to his oath, and failing of success only because he was hampered by surrounding circumstances. Bravely and skilfully he attempted to navigate his ship over a tempestuous ocean that must be crossed. He exerted every nerve, tacked and veered as he best could, and light ened his hold by sacrificing every encumbrance; but he was wrecked at last upon rocks that no pilot could avoid, amid storms that -no vessel could withstand. The ghost laid upop him the duty of avenging his murder. Merely to have plunged his sword into the king would have been a comparatively easy task; but what, then, would have been his own position? How would the act appear to the court and the people of Denmark? Thoroughly satisfied though he might be that it was an honest ghost he had seen, he had nevertheless no power to. The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. This second edition of Hamlet, edited by Philip Edwards, brings readers, playgoers and directors into the closest possible contact with Shakespeare's most famous and perplexing play. In the introduction, Edwards explores the possibility that Shakespeare made important alterations to Hamlet as it neared production, creating differences between the two early texts, quarto and folio. Edwards concentrates on essentials, dealing succinctly with the huge volume of commentary and controversy that the play has provoked, and offers a way forward that enables us to recognise Hamlet's full tragic energy. In a new supplementary section, Robert Hapgood discusses recent stage, film and critical interpretations of the play.
